Star-divide

Calvin Murray, starting CF of the Iowa Cubs and Dusty boy, retired this offseason and took a job with Scott Boras, in his agency.

Oh man. That's bad for the Iowa Cubs. What are we going to do now?

What about the idea of jacque jones in Right field
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2257513

He is looking for a short multiyear deal with a "contender"(he has said he doesn't want KC's money), for around 5 mil/year.  He has a low bat avg, but his OBP is alright, and he hits around 20-30 hr per year, and lefty no less.  I am new to this blog, and don't know how to create a new diary.  Anyway, I think this is a pretty decent option, then use Corey to trade for a shortstop, if we don't swallow our pride and take a chance on Nomah!!

What SS...
... could the Cubs possibly acquire for Patterson? He has little value.

And -- let's make this finally clear. No swallowing of pride will bring Nomar back. He was not offered arbitration. Thus, he cannot be signed by the Cubs till May 1.

I'd think he'd want to play before then.

He's gone.

well...
I didn't mean just corey, more likely some prospects.  Though, I am alright with Walker and Cedeno for right now.  That presupposes we have a new right fielder with some power.  I think that Bradley is a much bigger risk than Jones, who is a very good fielder and can hit, and is certainly better than just the ivy on the wall.

by cubbybear on Dec 13, 2005 10:49 AM CST reply actions

Jones...
...IS a good fielder, but his hitting is practically Corey-esque.  Check out those strike-out numbers!!!

I agree with others who've said that Jones only makes sense if you've got a Tejada in your line-up...

by Santos L Halper on Dec 13, 2005 11:37 AM CST up reply actions

If Bradley....
has a strong locker room around him i think he is much less of a risk. I am not talking about Dusty but Lee, Aram, and now Pierre. Personally I wouldn't mind having someone who gets fired up every now and then. We had no emotion last year.

by cubbieboy on Dec 13, 2005 12:07 PM CST reply actions

Not that I'm advocating for Jones...
But he did play for the Twins, a team that really didn't have much in the way of an Offense these past few years, only skating into the playoffs (before last year) on Defense and Pitching and being in the worst division in baseball (before the surprising W. Sox).

He does hit over 20 homeruns a year.  He has a much better avg. then Patterson (lifetime averages of .279 to KPat's .252).  And he gets around 80 RBI's a season for a team that doesn't get many men on base.  (sorta like us)

HOWEVER, the last two seasons he has seen dramatic declines in avg.  (around .300 in '02 and '03 compared to around .250 in '04 and '05).  He does get +100 K's a year.  (compared to Korey though, who gets a K for every 3 at bats, Jones gets a K little over every 4 at bats).

If it doesn't look like we are able to get ANYBODY besides Patterson to play right, then I think I would much rather have Jones.  And that's only saying if we can't find ANYBODY else.
