John Kass

Keeps rubbing the White Sox World Series in the faces of Cubs fans:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/chi-0512160191dec16,1,4234226.column?coll=chi-sportsnew-hed

So, I wrote him: (I'll edit for brevity)

"Classy winners don't rub trophies in the faces of others who lost out. Enjoy your good fortune, but don't screw with others."

He replied:

"Still hurts, eh?"

I replied:

"Your reply only confirms what I wrote earlier.
Instead of enjoying your good fortune -- you'd just rather place the hurt on others. That's classless."

There's more, but you've gotten the idea.

Cares more about the Cubs losing than the Sox winning.
Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?

Worse in October
His columns were worse in October, because most of them had the gist of "we're doing well in the playoffs and the Cubs aren't."

He's smarmy and condescending even when writing about politics or something else non-baseball related.  Complete waste of a column.

Go on The Heckler...
...website(which is primarily a Cubs site)and Sox fans have completely taken over the article comments boards. I find it sad that the ONLY thing some White Sox "fans" got out of winning the world series was bragging rights.

its why they....
won't win it again for 88 years. Those people are totally classless. Always have been, always will be. The best way to react to them is ignore them. I have a personnal friend of mine, who in fact was the best man at my wedding, and I have pretty much pushed him off as far as a friend goes. You know, I'm all for being happy that your team won it all but act like you've been there before. Isn't that what we teach our kids ? Not this guy, he actually went to the extreme of making my kids dad look like some kind of ( enter your own adjective here ) for being a Cub fan. To me, thats going to far and way out of bounds. It's a shame too,  a good friendship was lost because of someone who just couldn't control his emotions. I have alot of friends in New York who say the Red Sox fans were the same way after 04. Lets all us Cub fans unite as one and make a commitment when our day DOES come ,  to act with class. The pay back I'm gonna give my former friend when that day comes, is not call him. I don't wanna spoil MY FUN !!!

Without making...
... any judgments on others, I will say for myself, that WHEN the Cubs finally win it all, there's no nose-rubbing to be done.

The triumph will be all ours.

by Al Yellon on Dec 16, 2005 5:47 PM CST up reply actions

I will personally
embarass the Cub fan individual rubbing it in the faces of the sox fan(s) without hesitation.

When we win it, we do it with honor.

agreed
When the Cubs win the world series it will be every big party you have ever seen rolled into one. We won't need to rub it in anyone's face. What's being done on the field will do the talking for us.

Point of fact...
There are MANY, MANY Cub fans who WOULD "rub it in" Sox fans faces.  The Sun-Times reported on Cub fans who were chanting "Sox suck" after the Cubs secured their spot in the post-season back in '03.

I have no doubt that as a percentage of the fan base, more Sox fans do this type of thing than Cub fans.  But there are more Cub fans around.  And there are certainly a large number of loud mouth Cub fans too.

Heck, Al himself did nothing but predict and hope for the Sox do go down (have I told you about how Al predicted the Sox wouldn't win 70 games?) and most here were just chomping at the bit for the Sox to lose in the post-season.

One other thing, there is a podium that the Cubs have that the Sox do not.  The Cubs have the number one newspaper, a local TV network and a radio station that serve as organs for Cubpoganda.  Often that Cubpoganda has an anti-Sox bias to it, beating the Sox and Sox fans over the head constantly.

  • Two or three Sox choke headlines.
  • Article on pot smoke drifting up into the Cell from the projects, two days before the playoffs.
  • WGN radio, I don't think a single host could talk about the Sox without talking Sox attendance and how much more popular the Cubs are.
This is just some of the crap the Tribune piled on the Sox in their World Championship season.

In general, Sox fans probably do rub it in more, but Cub fans certainly do too and they have their friends in the media do it for them too.  John Kass is one Sox fan doing it to Cub fans but he's the exception not the rule at the Cubune.

Cubs Cubs Cubs Cubs
Did you guys win a series? Yep, you did. Enjoy it.

I appreciate you letting us know how awful we are on our own board though, time and time again. Plus, the big words make you sound smart. Well done.

Its not our fault a media congolomerate owns our team. I think if you have been here enough (and you certainly have), you would realize most of us wish that wasn't the case.

Are you surprised that we didn't want the Sox to win the Series? Its called hotel reality, check in anytime.

by Slaky311 on Dec 18, 2005 2:57 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah, you're so right...
And some of those déclassé Sox fans would probably even ignorantly give themselves names on the internet, mocking the Cubs, with names like, "Cubs suck."

Smug, but hardly unprofessional
I've seen reports of a certain Sun-Times reporter replying with far worse. (Think name calling, 4-letter words, etc.)

"Still hurts, eh?" is nothing to complain about. Be happy you got a response.

I've got to be honest
I thought it was a crap article. Not for the same reasons you did. In fact, I don't really have many reasons.

As soon as he said "my precious" I was done. I skimmed and saw he said it again. That was enough for me. My stomach was turning. Not my cup of tea, but most fluff pieces aren't. I want journalism (factual new reporting) or Op-ed pieces, anything else is just filler, and thus crap.

I just did a quick search as I figured there wouldn't be many links heading his way from my blog. -- Just one, during the Cubs-Sox series. -- I suppose this may be his modus operandi. And if so, I suggest you just ingore it.

If you do a search on my blog for that Sun-Times guy, you'll come up with only a few slips of the toungue AND ZERO LINKS. I don't read his columns. I don't link to his columns. I don't watch PTI. I wouldn't listen to him on ESPN 1000.

Columnists' bread-and-butter is controversy and pot-stirring. If you're not making someone angry, you better be giving them the hearfelt tale about how Jimmy turned his life around after the drunken incedent with the combine and school children on a field trip and is now, in an ironic twist, a school teacher himself. They're crap. Ignore them.

The rest of the response to John Kass --
I referred him to a SB blog (AL West) which has written some pretty nasty things about White Sox fans. That's the blog I wrote to, and was ripped for suggesting he clean up his act. I suggested to Kass that being a bad winner is just as bad as being a bad loser -- as this Blog's rather uncordial commentary about White Sox fans illustrated.

Have you seen it, Cheat? I'll bet you know what I am referring to. I thought it was tasteless and classless. It does not need repeating here. Higher standards, and all that.

It doesn't hurt me...
any more.  I'm still not thrilled by it.

As I said before they played Houston, they have a whole year to rub it in until the next team gets crowned.  I'm happy for some of their fans though, some of them are classy about it.

An attempt at humor
Is what the whole article was about, IMHO.

And if Cub fans were offended by Kass' attempts at humor, were their senses offended by a hateful, bilious column written recently Andrew Greeley?

by DrCrawdad on Dec 16, 2005 10:56 PM CST up reply actions

I knew this diary...
was gonna bring them out. They are just like little cockroaches. They sit there and just wait for something to turn up about the Sux and they jump out like cockroaches. Sitting in cyberspace waitng and waiting for that moment to crawl out of that scummy, spider web filled wall of theirs to scrounge whatever meal they can get their hands on, this of course being the craw of us Cub fans. Quick, Al, help! Call the cyber exterminators. Get rid of em. I can't live in a community with COCKROACHES !!

He could have said to me...
"Thanks for your comment, thanks for reading, you are a Cubs fan, I'm a happy White Sox fan --have a nice life." But no, he had to turn the screw.

"Still hurts, eh?"

Classless. But that's the way it is these days.
John Kass, you're no Mike Royko. You couldn't carry his jock strap. That's what we're left with these days -- inferior journalism.
Ignorant talk radio, whether it be sports OR news, the slop that Fox throws at us....and
mediocre editorials in major metro newspapers.
But, I guess it doesn't make any difference for the newspapers -- as their circulation is dropping....dropping....dropping......

Come on
I saw the article. I read it.

Its garbage writing. Who cares? The guy spends most of the year writing about issues like parenting, and then jumps out to write about Cubs fans three or four times.

Honestly, who cares? Hes not the first or only writer to have a vendetta against all things Cub. He wont be the last.

Yes, I hate the White Sox. Hope they enjoy their championship, congrats.

Can we get some players already and worry about 2006? Seems like thats a much bigger problem right now.
