The Anything Goes Thread

I'm tired of Tejada. Aren't you?

There aren't any new rumors today, and heading into another holiday weekend, it doesn't seem likely that there will be any big signings today.

So, I'm going to open this up for a free-for-all. Talk about anything you want. The Cubs. Your job or school. Movies.

The only things I'm going to ask are:

  • No politics, please. This is a non-political site.
  • Keep it clean, and follow the Community Guidelines.
Have at it. Discuss whatever, amongst yourselves!

(And keep voting in the Draw Chuck contest, and the 2005 Best MLB Blog voting over at The Red Reporter.)

How 'bout.....
those SOONERS.  How many people still think Oregon should have been in a BCS bowl?  That the PAC-10 gets screwed?  BLAH BLAH BLAH

If
Oregon was on the east coast they would be in a BCS bowl game. First because they would have the media bias and second they would have to play real football teams like the SEC and ACC and the Big Ten. with them playing Oregon State and Cal they will never be a big national threat. And by the way USC and Texas are over rated they more lucy than anything.

USC, in my opinion
Is overrated, and Texas underrated.  USC is being coronated before they even win.  I hope that Texas beats their asses, because USC has already been compared to 10 national champions of the past, and won the games according to ESPN!  That's just really rude of them, and also, last year's team would beat the crap out of this year's team, cuz their defense sucks this year.

more Sooner/Big 12 fans out there???  At least all you Big 10 (with how many teams?  You'd figure a COLLEGE conference could learn how to count) ACC fans don't have anything bad to say about my Sooners.

I guess it's hard to do that....we've played for 3 Championships in 5 years....own SEVEN Championships....and have that little ole 47 game winning streak.  USC will NOT break that!

There, now if that doesn't fire someone up, then I give up!  ;-)

I know I've mentioned my years in the Bay Area (in reference to Zito), and my time in Houston (in reference to the Astros), but - believe it or not - my peregrinations also took me to Cincinnati for a couple of years. (At least I've been consistent in the NL Central as of late.)

What about the big Ohio State/Notre Dame matchup? That's going to be a hell of a game.

What about Zito?
I think WGN's reporting that the Cubs are making a run at Barry Zito qualifies as a new rumor. Also interesting that the White Sox reportedly have two trade offers on the table for Tejada, one involving Contreras and the other Brandon McCarthy.

If this trade somehow goes down, it will be the finishing touches on Kenny Williams' taking Jim Hendry behind the woodshed. If the Tribune Co. wanted to, it could have authorized Hendry to go after a top starter - and they wouldn't have had to have Bedard in the Prior deal - which clearly was what killed it.

That said, the Cubs should empty the vault to get Zito. Pie, Hill, Murton, Marshall, Dopirek. No brainer. They just have to make sure they sign Zito to a long-term deal. And it's bye bye Woody after 2006. Good riddance.

I have been tired of Tejada...
since Prior became involved.

Hmm. Well, I don't go to school because I'm on vacation, but I don't go to a good school anyway. And I don't have a job, so I can't talk about that.  We already talk loads about the Cubs.  I'm not a particularly big movie watcher, although I try. I have nothing to talk about. Oh no! :)

Actually, yesterday my friend sent me a site (http://www.paulsadowski.com/)that tells you what your full name supposedly means.  She knows that I like to read those things, even though sometimes they are very wrong. This site told me that my name meant I was a self-centered, ambitious, pioneering, leading, independent, attaining, and giving, individual.  It said I would do great in business, but I don't want to go into business. But I have to say my description is pretty close.

Wrigley Updates?
Al - Do you have any plans to swing by Wrigley this weekend? It's been pretty nice this last week, but being the holidays I don't know if they've been working at all. With the deadline rapidly approaching, I'd have to think they're working every moment they can.
I'd love to see how the construction is coming. (Any movement yet on the car-wash side of the building, and the new structure that's going to go up over there?
If anyone else goes by, if you can post a picture or two, we'd all be grateful!

FYI...
... I am not in Chicago this weekend -- I'm out of town (mystery location -- maybe I'll tell, maybe I won't!), returning on Tuesday, which ought to explain my thin postings today.

So, I won't get any photos till next week, unless David e-mails me some.

About the building scheduled to go up west of the park, absolutely nothing has been done there this winter. I think that construction project is not going to happen till next off-season.

by Al Yellon on Dec 30, 2005 6:03 PM CST up reply actions

That is correct...
Al, along with the personalized brick walkway they are doing (announced in Vine Line this month and will be unveiled fully at teh Cubs Convention).

It all will start after 2006 season.

Should put to rest any ideas that the Cubs are NOT staying at Wrigley for a long time.

by mannytrillo on Dec 30, 2005 9:37 PM CST up reply actions

Walkway
What is the walkway? Is this one of those ones where you can buy bricks and stuff and have them put as part of it?

One of the cooler, yet more subtle things I've seen at any ballpark was in Arlington, TX. Circling what was at that time The Ballpark at Arlington was, obviously, a huge sidewalk. Amidst the concrete were several bricked areas, perhaps 20 X 20, one for each season of the team's existance. There were numerous bricks, one with the name of every player (along with their season statistics) and coach on that year's squad. A bigger one with the team's final record. Then there were other bricks detailing highlights of that season. That's one ballpark that I'd put near the top of the must see list, even though it's in the middle of nowhere.

yep
they mentioned in vineline this month that there will be a brick walkway (not sure where, maybe by the ticket window?) outside wrigley. the bricks will be for sale, no price yet, and can be personalized with 3 lines of text. kind of a neat idea, i think.

Vineline
After about 10 years of subsrcibing to the magazine, I decided not to renew this year. I never cared that it was a piece of Cubs publicity as I liked much of the info but I found that, of late, reading it was just not worth my time. The minor league reports were less informative and valuable. There are many sites and many of us seem to have better info to share on the team itself.

Catch the best bowl game in an hour!
Yep, it's the Sun Bowl....why should you watch?
  1. It feature's Chicago's ONLY college football team - Northwestern (which, I might remind you Cub fans, supports the Northside).
  2. Northwestern features one of the best senior QB's in the country (Brett Basanez), who, with 37 yards rushing, can become the first QB in college football history with 10,000 career passing yards and 1,000 career rushing yards.  You'll be seeing him on Sundays, one day (probably not as a starter, but as a very capable backup).
  3. Northwestern also features the best freshman running back in the country, Tyrell Sutton.  In two years (or less) expect Heisman talk out of Evanston.
  4. Northwestern is playing UCLA. Neither one of these teams has a defense.  So unlike the Cub's probable opening day lineup, this game will feature LOTS of offense.  I'd say a 56-51 final score would not be out of the question.
  5. It's something to do before Notre Dame gets exposed as the most overrated at-large team of the BCS era (seriously, look at their schedule.  Who did they BEAT? Note: close losses don't count.  No one but a mediocre Michigan team.  They are NOT as good as people think, but, as much as I hate it, Weis will get them there).
  6. It's on CBS, which means those of you without cable will still see the game.
GO CATS!!!!

by Shawn Domagal-Goldman on Dec 30, 2005 12:01 PM CST up reply actions

No idea on the over/under....
...but in 2000, my senior year at NU, I witnessed the epic Northwestern-Michigan game, which ended 54-51.  Arguably the greatest game I've ever seen in person, and maybe the best I've ever seen period (admittedly biased because my team won.) Onside kicks, huge performances (Damien Anderson, Anthony Thomas, Zak Kustok, and David Terrell all basically exploded in this game), and an incredible finish (with Anthony Thomas busting through near the end for what would have been a game clinching first down, seeing a completely open field and TD in front of him, bringing his arm back slightly, just as Sean Wieber stripped the ball, giving NU great field position and the chance to win at the end).  A poetic game, and an example of why offensive football can be fun to watch.

I only hope this year's National Championship lives up to the hype....I'd love a great game, a la the classic Nebraska/Miami game (with Nebraska going for 2) or Miami/Ohio State (just an incredible game).

Go Cats! (And Buckeyes, since I HATE Notre Dame)

Anything Al?
Hmm I wonder what I can think of?
Would you believe I actually found a Maddux
story I  had never heard before yesterday? Honest.
I must confess while googling re his returning to
the Cubs in 04 I found a great bit someone posted
on The Cub Reporter which came from of all places
a profile in PLAYBOY ( which may explain why I  missed
it and I had to sign up with the "Mature Audiences" part
of eBay to bid on a copy of the back issue yesterday).
It is by the wonderful Thomas Boswell whose baseball
writings are among my favorites, especially the early
collections.
This is for Nickler who seems to think Maddux is
self centered and gready

In a 1997 profile on Maddux for "Playboy" magazine, "Controlling Force," Tom
Boswell explored why the future Hall of Famer is so easy to overlook:

Greg Maddux has nothing to sell and little to hide. He has no image to cultivate or protect because he hasn't bothered to create one...He has no
public persona whatsoever. He may be the most widely known athlete in
American history who can walk down any street and go unrecognized. "Around
the ballpark, they know who you are," he says, "but you go a couple of miles
up the road, dude, they got no clue."
 Further, Boswell explains:

If you want a series of interviews with a star athlete and you don't already
have a personal history with him, this is what usually happens: You have to
perform the goddamn twelve labors of Hercules.
You talk to his agent, his lawyer, his general manager, his team's public
relations director. Your people talk to his people. You block out time. You
do a courtship dance. The process can take weeks. Perhaps he blows you off.
Finally, you go to a steakhouse or play golf or visit him in his home. But,
underneath it all, here's the basic ground rule and the subtext: He's a
star.

This is how it works with Greg Maddux. You walk up to him in the clubhouse
and introduce yourself. He says, "Playboy, huh? Do I get to pose?"

By the way Zito is overrated, IMO.  He won a cy young, but he's not really a "cy young pitcher"

Could be fun
The Cubs would have the market cornered on American-born black players with French names.  But that's about all Grissom would add to the team.  I have to think, if there is anything to the report, Grisson is getting anything more than a Calvin Murray-type minor league deal.  As for him starting over Murton - there's just no way.  Not even worth thinking about getting worked up about.

Grissom has played 53 (2.5%) games in right field and only 85 (4.05) in left field.  The guy just hasn't been a corner outfielder.  And Pierre almost never takes time off, so he won't be playing center field.  No reason at all to get outraged yet on a throwaway line from Grisson's agent.

Gaius, out of curiousity, have you ever been happy with the Cubs?

And
most of his time in left and right has been as a replacement.  he has only played 2.9% of his innings in left and 2.0% in right.

that's a better breakdown
than i had -- the early years are the difference.

but, truth be told, he's not going to play much in center. a couple years ago, he hit lefthanded pitching pretty well. he's here to platoon with matt murton. grissom's arm won't allow him to platoon w/jones, and jones is making a mint to play everyday anyway. they'd no sooner platoon him than they did burnitz.

and someone may have to, it should be said. no one really has much idea of whether or not murton can handle lefthanded pitching.

in 2003 i was abjectly happy. then that ended.

but more seriously -- criticism is how things are improved in this world. scientists don't look at a microchip or a pharmaceutical and go, "wow! i'm happy with that!" and then think about puppies and butterflies the rest of their lives. :) i'm critical, not only of the cubs but a lot of things in my life, because i want them to improve and want to take on some responsibility for helping them improve to whatever small extent i can.

i'm not
i agree with einstein there, but only a fool thinks one is any good without the other. both together drive human progress, such as it is.

i understand that there is a point where criticism becomes cynicism and defeatism. but the situation in cub nation is NOWHERE NEAR it -- as can often be seen here -- thanks to the great efforts of the tribune company to exploit sentimentality in its fanbase. indeed, it has the opposite problem -- too many imaginative flights of fancy, not enough rational evidenciary assessment.

cub fans are some of the least critical in sports precisely because the organization highlights nostalgia above all things -- christ, they have a ragtime band walking the aisles! have you ever been to any stadium anywhere that made more of its history? even fenway and yankee pale in comparison. tribco has turned wrigley and the team into an oasis of a simple, escapist fantasy past in a confusing, blinding postmodern world. the cubs aren't about wins and losses; they're about being safe, warm, relaxing, reflective, and escaping.

the LAST thing people attracted to the way the cubs are sold is some intrusion from the real world -- criticism and rational methodology. (which is why people like chuck or myself get impaled regularly by "true blue" cub fans, who unwittingly care vastly more for taking flight from real life than any actual team).

but i suppose i'm not saying anything here i haven't said before. most people will take this as evidence that i'm nuts, thereby reassuring their postmodern pathology of escape. so be it. who am i to deny anyone their flight from this punchcard-timeclock life?

by gaius marius on Dec 31, 2005 9:04 AM CST up reply actions

in many ways
the new marketing of baseball as an olde-tyme affair -- in stark contrast to the futurism of astroturf, polyester uniforms and the postmodern multifunctional "donut" stadiums that characterized the sport even 20 years ago -- what pioneered by the cubs at that time. it was failing miserably in the late 1970s.

but america changed underneath it, when the failure of social planning experiments like the great society, american defeat in vietnam and the ultracynicism of watergate provoked a backlash of fantasy and escape. the movement had many manifestations, from decadent disco to nihilist punk, but its most enduring has been a lasting wave of uncritical sentimentalism. this was a basic shift in american thought away from what has been called the adversary culture -- ruthlessly rational dialectic argument over evidence in search of progress gave way to a formless impulse to avoid debate, argument and even thought as a means of reprieve from what many saw to be the very depressing product of centuries of civilization and a hope for a lost social harmony.

the new dominance of ficitional escape can be seen all over our society: the spectacular acceleration of entertainment; the propagation of fantastic and pleasantly misleading "infotainment" news; the total dessication of popular protest and indeed popular involvement in public and civic affairs; and, last but not least, the titanic rise of sport. many of these exist in our age as an intensification of trends that began in the late 19th c, but intensified they have -- and the cubs have capitalized on its brilliantly, becoming the model by which all of baseball is increasingly run, the first emulation being camden yards in the early 1990s.

by gaius marius on Dec 31, 2005 9:33 AM CST up reply actions

I don't think your completely...
...nuts. In fact I agree with your assesment of the organization turning Wrigley into a nostalgic timepiece. I have noticed since the '03 season that the fan base have become critics. You can see that by the way the crowd reacts to bad baserunning, muffed double plays, Korey, and the pitching staff constantly walking batters. In fact you could compare the kind of anger were beginning to see at Wrigley to the kind of thing we see in Boston or NY.

Unless McFAIL reacts to this increasing agitation and removes the cuffs from Hendry's wrists, then I can't see a change coming because Wrigley will constantly be filled. I still hold on to hope.

In different hands
I might think signing Grissom was a good idea.  The guy didn't hit anything last year, so he might be done, but over the course of the past few years he's really slugged lefties--and we need a platoon partner for Jones.

But here's the thing.  Signing Grissom is a good idea IF:

--he can play right field and platoon with Jones
--he doesn't take playing time away from Murton
--he isn't completely done, meaning he can still hit lefties
--we cut his ass by Memorial Day if it's proven he can't play anymore

I just don't have any faith in Hendry and Dusty to do those things.  You just know Dusty is going to play Jones against lefties and put Grissom in left field at the expense of Murton.  And with as long as it took Hendry to jettison Lenny F. Harris' sorry ass, I've got this awful feeling that a Grissom signing would mean seeing his .212 batting average in left field on the Fourth of July.

Look what they did to UCLA with 2 weeks of prep time and they do have a kick-ass offense.

Dayn Perry
If you're a Cubs fan I'd recommend that you turn off the Dayn Perrys, Phil Rogers, Jay Mariotis, and yes...even the Steve Stones of the world. They've all gotten to the point where EVERYTHING the Cubs do could have been done better. The first three are Cub haters.

Do you really believe Roger's proposal that we send Zambrano AND Prior to the Orioles for Tejada had the best interests of the Cubs in mind?

And while I'm on this little rant, it amazes me that some of you trust SCORE as an informative Cubs source. They're a White Sox station that plays it too cute when they're trying to "help" the Cubs with some of their proposals. WGN does a better job of telling it like it is, as far as the Cubs are concerned. I do recognize that they're the Cub station, but you might as well tune into Cardinals sports talk for info on the Cubs, coz you'll get similar Cub analysis on SCORE, just hidden better.

As far as Steve Stone is concerned I guess I was one of the few Cub diehards that was happy to seem him go. I like it straight up and honest, but Stone became the "game" as he used every opportunity to knock the Cubs while furthering his own credentials as a straight shooter. I got sick and tired of hearing about how our opponent for the night was doing things so much better than the Cubs. He became the story, and the burnishing of his own credentials at the expense of the Cubs became sickening for me to watch.

I probably have a longer Chicago sports history than most on this board. I'm even older than your hero Al. I go back further than the Banks, Beckert, Kessinger, Santo, Hundley, Jose Cardinal, Adolpho Philips, Williams, Jenkins, Holtzman, Phil Regan days. I watched the greatest LB (Butkus) and greatest RB (Sayers) on the same team go 3-11. Of course Jack Concannon at QB may have been a big reason for that. You younger pups and puppettes may not even recognize these names. This will be a blast to the past for some of the gray beards on this board, though.

My views are those of a man with 40+ years of watching Chicago sports.

My feelings about Stone (who I liked, until I watched him make himself the story) are sure to upset some on this board. If you continue to allow yourself to be spoon fed someone else's opinion, you'll forever be turning on the latest talk show (Score) or reading some opinion piece (Marioti or Rogers) to figure out what you should believe for the day.

by BeerCub on Dec 31, 2005 11:57 AM CST up reply actions

Historical yes, elitist agism, no!
My emphasis on how long I've followed Chicago Sports was meant in a historical context, not one where I feel more informed because of my age. I'm sure you know the old saw that those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. I've seen a similar history with the Cubs played out before. Did I just end that sentence in a preposition?

I also don't consider age a barometer of being more informed, although it should be. As you get older you should get wiser. That's not always the case. Just as there are young fools there are also old fools.

There's another old saw that goes (these are loose renditions of these sayings, by the way) that if you're not a liberal when you're 20, than you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 30 though, you have no brain.

A generality to be sure, but generalities like stereotypes have a basis in truth, though many in this PC age are wont to admit or even recognize that.

I'm not familiar with that paper....
but there is good reason to study Freud. Granted, many of his ideas aren't applicable anymore, but he basically created the field and did more than anyone since, barring Jung perhaps, to further research into the human mind. He had the first theory of stages of development, as warped as they might have been, which countless others used as a model for creating their own theories.

He later recanted many of the theories that he had in the early going and revised them. He also had a lot of his own issues, not to mention snorting enough coke to kill an elephant.

And with that being said, I'm off to go do some counseling.

ou, USC, and Texas
I can't believe I get on this diary and have to deal with two posts about the sooners...especially one leading off. There's no escaping those guys.

But Sooner, I'd have been more than happy to back you up on getting some respect for the Big 12, but once you went on about the "ou dynasty" stuff, you were on your own. Sooner fans could do everyone a favor by taking a page from Mark McGwire. Repeat after me: "I am not here to talk about the past."

On to other comments, yeah, ESPN's running theme where they pit USC against the best teams in college history is goofy, but that's no reason to root for Texas over USC...because they're doing it with Texas, also. At least USC's won a couple of national championships leading up to this.

It's funny how everytime USC has a week or two off, everyone expects them to steam roll their opponent. "Anytime you give Pete Carroll that kind of time..." It wasn't all that long ago you couldn't take him seriously as a coach.

Speaking of which, that's exactly why I'd comfortably put a bet on USC. Texas is coached by Mack Brown.

Someone said that Notre Dame didn't play anybody with a defense...USC was on the schedule, right?

Finally, a note of congratulations to former Big 12 coach Les Miles on leading LSU to a huge win. Not only did Les actually win a bowl game, but he managed to build a huge lead and not sit on it. Maybe he's learning.

Or maybe he's all ready under the gun.

I don't even know how to respond to the last USC thing. I don't think I understood it. But if USC's defense was as bad as you say it is, they would have lost a game or two this year.

Leinart rules...sports fans always gripe about what greedy hired guns stud athletes become, and we finally have one guy who will pass up a year of big money to enjoy and finish college, and people rip him. Unbelievable.

On a different note, whatever happened to Paul Kilgus and Jeff Pico? Someone should do a "Where are they now?" documentary on the 89 Cubs. Am I the only one who wonders if Domingo Ramos is still alive?

Dunno About Kligus...
...but a couple of years ago Jeff Pico was the pitching coach for an independent league team out here in California, like the Yuma Rattlers or some such thing. The league, whose name I can't recall, disbanded.

More Pico
http://www.jethawks.com/gamesummary.php?id=475

He'll be the pitching coach yet again for the Lancaster Jet Hawks, joining manager Brett Butler, for the Diamondbacks.

Speaking of negativity...
Does anybody here remember the glory days of the Blackhawks? We may complain about TribCo, but the reign of the Wirtz family (currently "Dollar" Bill Wirtz) has trashed the franchise and turned it into one of the least valuable franchises in all -- that's ALL of pro sports, if I recall an article in Forbes Magazine earlier this year.

Chicago used to be a hockey town -- sell outs every night at the old Chicago Stadium. I grew up in that building, along with Wrigley. At least people still flock to Wrigley Field -- Blackhawks home games aren't even televised due to the 1950's thinking of ownership. Then again -- what's the point? When teams in Florida win the Stanley Cup before ANY one of the original 6 -- all is lost.

Extreme Blackhawks Trivia
Here is somethiing about the Blackhawks
you won't find anywhere else. My father was a
Ob/Gyn and one of his friends was the team doctor
for the Blackhawk in the early 50s. When he was out
of town he would get my father to sub for him. After
all any doctor can sew up a gash etc. He did not get
paid but they gave him as many tickets as he wanted
but usually he could not get anyone to go. He used
to tell me about the time a player went down hard in
the middle of the ice and some of the players had
to put skates on him and drag him out to treat the guy

In any event I think we can safely say that the Blackhawks
were the only male sports team with their own Ob/Gyn. ( He did
actually end up getting a number of players wives as
patients)

last comment is confusing...
red wings won as recently as 2002. lightning won in 2004. there was no 2005 cup. viewed from 2004 forward, "teams in florida" won the cup before anybody, original 6 or no.

its too much
to say that the cubs are headed that way, with the chicago wolves being the better team to watch -- but the near-total indifference to winning and the complete obsession with profitability are quite characteristic of how wirtz has run the team all along, which has been mercilessly exposed since free agency in sport really exploded.

while the cubs and tribco are clearly slaves of the dollar, they at least understand revenue maximization as key to building ROI. wirtz apparently doesn't -- with the sole exception of building the united center -- still playing the game the old pre-flood way, colluding, scrimping and intimidating.

but, in time, the cubs could be the hawks. while managing the business end better than wirtz -- particularly in successfully changing the terms of the basic compact with the fans from winning (now ignored) to the much more reliable and easily achieved goal of rote nostalgia -- they've (similarly to the hawks) shown barely a whit of risk-taking creativity in team building since the rise of free agency. they, like wirtz, are content instead to milk their winless cash cow dry, reaping short-term profit at the expense of long-term franchise health.

I just voted...
again, and we're pretty close to second. So everyone keep voting.  Al, you should've never said that we had to beat TCR.  That just woke them up, and now it's impossible to catch up to them.

yeah, I know....
... but I wanted to generate some votes for us. Little did I know that TCR would take that as a challenge.

Hey, maybe we'll wind up 1 + 2 in the voting.

New topic: Kelly Clarkson is awesome.
Discuss.  Any negative comments about my future bride may be sent to me via email.  That is all. This is not a topic up for discussion, as much as pure agreement.  Yes, I may currently be experiencing a bit of the "holiday cheer" so to speak.  Beside the point.  KC is awesome.
