The Anything Goes Thread
I'm tired of Tejada. Aren't you?
There aren't any new rumors today, and heading into another holiday weekend, it doesn't seem likely that there will be any big signings today.
So, I'm going to open this up for a free-for-all. Talk about anything you want. The Cubs. Your job or school. Movies.
The only things I'm going to ask are:
- No politics, please. This is a non-political site.
- Keep it clean, and follow the Community Guidelines.
(And keep voting in the Draw Chuck contest, and the 2005 Best MLB Blog voting over at The Red Reporter.)

What a silly statement..
No..
I guess it's hard to do that....we've played for 3 Championships in 5 years....own SEVEN Championships....and have that little ole 47 game winning streak. USC will NOT break that!
There, now if that doesn't fire someone up, then I give up! ;-)

What about Zito?
If this trade somehow goes down, it will be the finishing touches on Kenny Williams' taking Jim Hendry behind the woodshed. If the Tribune Co. wanted to, it could have authorized Hendry to go after a top starter - and they wouldn't have had to have Bedard in the Prior deal - which clearly was what killed it.
That said, the Cubs should empty the vault to get Zito. Pie, Hill, Murton, Marshall, Dopirek. No brainer. They just have to make sure they sign Zito to a long-term deal. And it's bye bye Woody after 2006. Good riddance.

I have been tired of Tejada...
Hmm. Well, I don't go to school because I'm on vacation, but I don't go to a good school anyway. And I don't have a job, so I can't talk about that. We already talk loads about the Cubs. I'm not a particularly big movie watcher, although I try. I have nothing to talk about. Oh no! :)
Actually, yesterday my friend sent me a site (http://www.paulsadowski.com/)that tells you what your full name supposedly means. She knows that I like to read those things, even though sometimes they are very wrong. This site told me that my name meant I was a self-centered, ambitious, pioneering, leading, independent, attaining, and giving, individual. It said I would do great in business, but I don't want to go into business. But I have to say my description is pretty close.

I'd love to see how the construction is coming. (Any movement yet on the car-wash side of the building, and the new structure that's going to go up over there?

So, I won't get any photos till next week, unless David e-mails me some.
About the building scheduled to go up west of the park, absolutely nothing has been done there this winter. I think that construction project is not going to happen till next off-season.
That is correct...
It all will start after 2006 season.
Should put to rest any ideas that the Cubs are NOT staying at Wrigley for a long time.

Walkway
One of the cooler, yet more subtle things I've seen at any ballpark was in Arlington, TX. Circling what was at that time The Ballpark at Arlington was, obviously, a huge sidewalk. Amidst the concrete were several bricked areas, perhaps 20 X 20, one for each season of the team's existance. There were numerous bricks, one with the name of every player (along with their season statistics) and coach on that year's squad. A bigger one with the team's final record. Then there were other bricks detailing highlights of that season. That's one ballpark that I'd put near the top of the must see list, even though it's in the middle of nowhere.

Catch the best bowl game in an hour!
- It feature's Chicago's ONLY college football team - Northwestern (which, I might remind you Cub fans, supports the Northside).
- Northwestern features one of the best senior QB's in the country (Brett Basanez), who, with 37 yards rushing, can become the first QB in college football history with 10,000 career passing yards and 1,000 career rushing yards. You'll be seeing him on Sundays, one day (probably not as a starter, but as a very capable backup).
- Northwestern also features the best freshman running back in the country, Tyrell Sutton. In two years (or less) expect Heisman talk out of Evanston.
- Northwestern is playing UCLA. Neither one of these teams has a defense. So unlike the Cub's probable opening day lineup, this game will feature LOTS of offense. I'd say a 56-51 final score would not be out of the question.
- It's something to do before Notre Dame gets exposed as the most overrated at-large team of the BCS era (seriously, look at their schedule. Who did they BEAT? Note: close losses don't count. No one but a mediocre Michigan team. They are NOT as good as people think, but, as much as I hate it, Weis will get them there).
- It's on CBS, which means those of you without cable will still see the game.

Anything Al?
Would you believe I actually found a Maddux
story I had never heard before yesterday? Honest.
I must confess while googling re his returning to
the Cubs in 04 I found a great bit someone posted
on The Cub Reporter which came from of all places
a profile in PLAYBOY ( which may explain why I missed
it and I had to sign up with the "Mature Audiences" part
of eBay to bid on a copy of the back issue yesterday).
It is by the wonderful Thomas Boswell whose baseball
writings are among my favorites, especially the early
collections.
This is for Nickler who seems to think Maddux is
self centered and gready
In a 1997 profile on Maddux for "Playboy" magazine, "Controlling Force," Tom
Boswell explored why the future Hall of Famer is so easy to overlook:
Greg Maddux has nothing to sell and little to hide. He has no image to cultivate or protect because he hasn't bothered to create one...He has no
public persona whatsoever. He may be the most widely known athlete in
American history who can walk down any street and go unrecognized. "Around
the ballpark, they know who you are," he says, "but you go a couple of miles
up the road, dude, they got no clue."
Further, Boswell explains:
If you want a series of interviews with a star athlete and you don't already
have a personal history with him, this is what usually happens: You have to
perform the goddamn twelve labors of Hercules.
You talk to his agent, his lawyer, his general manager, his team's public
relations director. Your people talk to his people. You block out time. You
do a courtship dance. The process can take weeks. Perhaps he blows you off.
Finally, you go to a steakhouse or play golf or visit him in his home. But,
underneath it all, here's the basic ground rule and the subtext: He's a
star.
This is how it works with Greg Maddux. You walk up to him in the clubhouse
and introduce yourself. He says, "Playboy, huh? Do I get to pose?"

but, truth be told, he's not going to play much in center. a couple years ago, he hit lefthanded pitching pretty well. he's here to platoon with matt murton. grissom's arm won't allow him to platoon w/jones, and jones is making a mint to play everyday anyway. they'd no sooner platoon him than they did burnitz.

by cubfan4life on Dec 30, 2005 7:42 PM CST up reply actions
i'm not
i understand that there is a point where criticism becomes cynicism and defeatism. but the situation in cub nation is NOWHERE NEAR it -- as can often be seen here -- thanks to the great efforts of the tribune company to exploit sentimentality in its fanbase. indeed, it has the opposite problem -- too many imaginative flights of fancy, not enough rational evidenciary assessment.
cub fans are some of the least critical in sports precisely because the organization highlights nostalgia above all things -- christ, they have a ragtime band walking the aisles! have you ever been to any stadium anywhere that made more of its history? even fenway and yankee pale in comparison. tribco has turned wrigley and the team into an oasis of a simple, escapist fantasy past in a confusing, blinding postmodern world. the cubs aren't about wins and losses; they're about being safe, warm, relaxing, reflective, and escaping.
the LAST thing people attracted to the way the cubs are sold is some intrusion from the real world -- criticism and rational methodology. (which is why people like chuck or myself get impaled regularly by "true blue" cub fans, who unwittingly care vastly more for taking flight from real life than any actual team).
but i suppose i'm not saying anything here i haven't said before. most people will take this as evidence that i'm nuts, thereby reassuring their postmodern pathology of escape. so be it. who am i to deny anyone their flight from this punchcard-timeclock life?
by gaius marius on Dec 31, 2005 9:04 AM CST up reply actions
in many ways
but america changed underneath it, when the failure of social planning experiments like the great society, american defeat in vietnam and the ultracynicism of watergate provoked a backlash of fantasy and escape. the movement had many manifestations, from decadent disco to nihilist punk, but its most enduring has been a lasting wave of uncritical sentimentalism. this was a basic shift in american thought away from what has been called the adversary culture -- ruthlessly rational dialectic argument over evidence in search of progress gave way to a formless impulse to avoid debate, argument and even thought as a means of reprieve from what many saw to be the very depressing product of centuries of civilization and a hope for a lost social harmony.
the new dominance of ficitional escape can be seen all over our society: the spectacular acceleration of entertainment; the propagation of fantastic and pleasantly misleading "infotainment" news; the total dessication of popular protest and indeed popular involvement in public and civic affairs; and, last but not least, the titanic rise of sport. many of these exist in our age as an intensification of trends that began in the late 19th c, but intensified they have -- and the cubs have capitalized on its brilliantly, becoming the model by which all of baseball is increasingly run, the first emulation being camden yards in the early 1990s.
by gaius marius on Dec 31, 2005 9:33 AM CST up reply actions
I don't think your completely...
Unless McFAIL reacts to this increasing agitation and removes the cuffs from Hendry's wrists, then I can't see a change coming because Wrigley will constantly be filled. I still hold on to hope.

In different hands
But here's the thing. Signing Grissom is a good idea IF:
--he can play right field and platoon with Jones
--he doesn't take playing time away from Murton
--he isn't completely done, meaning he can still hit lefties
--we cut his ass by Memorial Day if it's proven he can't play anymore
I just don't have any faith in Hendry and Dusty to do those things. You just know Dusty is going to play Jones against lefties and put Grissom in left field at the expense of Murton. And with as long as it took Hendry to jettison Lenny F. Harris' sorry ass, I've got this awful feeling that a Grissom signing would mean seeing his .212 batting average in left field on the Fourth of July.

Do you really believe Roger's proposal that we send Zambrano AND Prior to the Orioles for Tejada had the best interests of the Cubs in mind?
And while I'm on this little rant, it amazes me that some of you trust SCORE as an informative Cubs source. They're a White Sox station that plays it too cute when they're trying to "help" the Cubs with some of their proposals. WGN does a better job of telling it like it is, as far as the Cubs are concerned. I do recognize that they're the Cub station, but you might as well tune into Cardinals sports talk for info on the Cubs, coz you'll get similar Cub analysis on SCORE, just hidden better.
As far as Steve Stone is concerned I guess I was one of the few Cub diehards that was happy to seem him go. I like it straight up and honest, but Stone became the "game" as he used every opportunity to knock the Cubs while furthering his own credentials as a straight shooter. I got sick and tired of hearing about how our opponent for the night was doing things so much better than the Cubs. He became the story, and the burnishing of his own credentials at the expense of the Cubs became sickening for me to watch.
I probably have a longer Chicago sports history than most on this board. I'm even older than your hero Al. I go back further than the Banks, Beckert, Kessinger, Santo, Hundley, Jose Cardinal, Adolpho Philips, Williams, Jenkins, Holtzman, Phil Regan days. I watched the greatest LB (Butkus) and greatest RB (Sayers) on the same team go 3-11. Of course Jack Concannon at QB may have been a big reason for that. You younger pups and puppettes may not even recognize these names. This will be a blast to the past for some of the gray beards on this board, though.
My views are those of a man with 40+ years of watching Chicago sports.
My feelings about Stone (who I liked, until I watched him make himself the story) are sure to upset some on this board. If you continue to allow yourself to be spoon fed someone else's opinion, you'll forever be turning on the latest talk show (Score) or reading some opinion piece (Marioti or Rogers) to figure out what you should believe for the day.

He later recanted many of the theories that he had in the early going and revised them. He also had a lot of his own issues, not to mention snorting enough coke to kill an elephant.
And with that being said, I'm off to go do some counseling.

ou, USC, and Texas
But Sooner, I'd have been more than happy to back you up on getting some respect for the Big 12, but once you went on about the "ou dynasty" stuff, you were on your own. Sooner fans could do everyone a favor by taking a page from Mark McGwire. Repeat after me: "I am not here to talk about the past."
On to other comments, yeah, ESPN's running theme where they pit USC against the best teams in college history is goofy, but that's no reason to root for Texas over USC...because they're doing it with Texas, also. At least USC's won a couple of national championships leading up to this.
It's funny how everytime USC has a week or two off, everyone expects them to steam roll their opponent. "Anytime you give Pete Carroll that kind of time..." It wasn't all that long ago you couldn't take him seriously as a coach.
Speaking of which, that's exactly why I'd comfortably put a bet on USC. Texas is coached by Mack Brown.
Someone said that Notre Dame didn't play anybody with a defense...USC was on the schedule, right?
Finally, a note of congratulations to former Big 12 coach Les Miles on leading LSU to a huge win. Not only did Les actually win a bowl game, but he managed to build a huge lead and not sit on it. Maybe he's learning.
Or maybe he's all ready under the gun.
USC?
Oh by the way USC gave up 400+ tards of offense to ND!!! look it up

hold up a sec...
Leinart rules...sports fans always gripe about what greedy hired guns stud athletes become, and we finally have one guy who will pass up a year of big money to enjoy and finish college, and people rip him. Unbelievable.
I mean, if you're going to rip him for anything, rip him for hanging out with Nick Lachey.
On a different note, whatever happened to Paul Kilgus and Jeff Pico? Someone should do a "Where are they now?" documentary on the 89 Cubs. Am I the only one who wonders if Domingo Ramos is still alive?
Dunno About Kligus...
More Pico
He'll be the pitching coach yet again for the Lancaster Jet Hawks, joining manager Brett Butler, for the Diamondbacks.
Speaking of negativity...
Chicago used to be a hockey town -- sell outs every night at the old Chicago Stadium. I grew up in that building, along with Wrigley. At least people still flock to Wrigley Field -- Blackhawks home games aren't even televised due to the 1950's thinking of ownership. Then again -- what's the point? When teams in Florida win the Stanley Cup before ANY one of the original 6 -- all is lost.

Extreme Blackhawks Trivia
you won't find anywhere else. My father was a
Ob/Gyn and one of his friends was the team doctor
for the Blackhawk in the early 50s. When he was out
of town he would get my father to sub for him. After
all any doctor can sew up a gash etc. He did not get
paid but they gave him as many tickets as he wanted
but usually he could not get anyone to go. He used
to tell me about the time a player went down hard in
the middle of the ice and some of the players had
to put skates on him and drag him out to treat the guy
In any event I think we can safely say that the Blackhawks
were the only male sports team with their own Ob/Gyn. ( He did
actually end up getting a number of players wives as
patients)

its too much
while the cubs and tribco are clearly slaves of the dollar, they at least understand revenue maximization as key to building ROI. wirtz apparently doesn't -- with the sole exception of building the united center -- still playing the game the old pre-flood way, colluding, scrimping and intimidating.
but, in time, the cubs could be the hawks. while managing the business end better than wirtz -- particularly in successfully changing the terms of the basic compact with the fans from winning (now ignored) to the much more reliable and easily achieved goal of rote nostalgia -- they've (similarly to the hawks) shown barely a whit of risk-taking creativity in team building since the rise of free agency. they, like wirtz, are content instead to milk their winless cash cow dry, reaping short-term profit at the expense of long-term franchise health.
