Nomar Update

Stolen from Yahoo, who got it from KFFL, who got it from Carrie Muskrat (spelling intentional).

Chicago Cubs SS Nomar Garciaparra (groin) was 1-for-2 in his first game on a rehab assignment with the organization's rookie ball team in Mesa, Ariz. He played four innings, getting an infield hit and a strikeout, according to Carrie Muskat of Cubs.MLB.com

The infield hit warms the cockles of my heart.

Warm cockles?
I dunno about that... ;)

But, yes, it's good that he's playing, and the rest of that article says he's going to play every other day, so his next game will be Sunday.

Glad to hear that...
Legging out an infield hit (to me) says loads about how healthy the groin is.  After all, he injured it trying to come out of the box.

I Hope Like Crazy He's Good To Go
But does anyone else REALLY expect Nomar to come back and make a difference this year? Or have I just been jaded so often I can't see straight anymore?

Yes.
There's no way that Nomar isn't an upgrade over Neifi.

If healthy -- and he must be, or he wouldn't be playing baseball -- he's an instant upgrade and a psychological lift for the entire ballclub.

by Al Yellon on Jul 23, 2005 10:45 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm Nuts...
..but I kinda have a soft spot for Neifi. He did all he could and then of course has faded badly, but we didn't get him to start. Nonetheless, you're right, the psychological lift Nomar will give the team just by virtue of him working so hard to get back won't be able to be measured. But for that very reason I hope he's really ready and not coming back too soon.

Nomar an upgrade over Neifi?
He certainly won't be an upgrade in the field, that's for sure. Garciaparra's lack of range at SS was becoming a serious concern even before his groin snapped like a rubberband. One thing you can't take away from Perez is the fact that the guy flashes some serious leather at what is essentially a defense-first position.

Nomar is going to have to hit at a pretty brisk clip to make up for the defensive downgrade he'll present to the Cubs at shortstop.

What I suspect we'll see is a lot of Perez coming in to caddy for Garciaparra at shortstop in the late innings of games that the Cubs are leading.

I sure hope...
... there are a lot of such occasions!

The only bad thing
I can see with this, is that he still has to work on his swing because I don't think he was trying to hit an infield single, I don't really know.  No worries, he can take his time.

if you don't see
the IF hit, you cannot make assumptions.  He could have hit a 1 hop smash that an IF dove for and knocked down and had no play.  He could have hit a 28-hopper up the middle that was unplayable.  He could have been the beneficiary of a generous call on an error.

The thing is we should be happy his in on the field, period.

Hey bob
we agree totally. Amazing, huh?

Incidentally...
... Nomar turns 32 today (Saturday, July 23).

Wow, a lot of time
I remember his rookie season.
According to the Chicago Tribune: "The Oakland A's are 32-0 when they have scored more runs than their opponents.

Ya Know....
Unless he comes back in stellar form and shows no ill effetcs whatsoever, after this season I'd be all for calling it quits on the Nomar Experiment and go after another shortstop.

Or
Maybe Ronny Cedeno should be the player.

He's playing, that's stellar news.
