Corey Patterson Just Doesn't Get It.

This doesn't surprise me, but it sure does tick me off.  Via the Chicago Tribune:

Patterson not ready to agree to winter ball

The Cubs would like outfielder Corey Patterson to polish his batting stroke in winter ball, but he will not commit to that yet.

"I'm not going to think about it right now," Patterson said. "It's my decision. I have to do what I think is best for me, but I'm not saying one way or another. I just want to play the best I can [for the rest of the season]."

Manager Dusty Baker said he would talk to Patterson soon about the idea.

"You can't force anybody to do anything," Baker said. "For his sake and his career, I wish maybe he would play somewhere."

Patterson, who did play half a season in winter ball a few years ago, has suffered through a miserable season that included being sent to the minors.

He was on the bench Tuesday with an average that had fallen to .224. He had just six hits in his last 42 at-bats (.143) in his previous 12 games.

Baker said he wants to play Patterson a lot the final month but also has to take into account his plummeting batting average.

"You have to consider that if you push him too much ... you don't want him to lose confidence. It's a fine line."

Who the h--- does Corey Patterson think he is?  He is an employee of this team, he has had a sucky season, and his boss is telling him to work on it this winter, and he says:

"It's my decision. I have to do what I think is best for me."

No. He is supposed to do what is best for THE TEAM. He is selfish and this makes it clear. I don't know why so many people speak up in his defense--he doesn't deserve it.

Mr. Hendry:

PLEASE TRADE OR DFA HIM.  DO IT NOW.
