Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Oh, the (possible) horror!

Al, you're right, the idea of the Cardinals celebrating winning the division at Wrigley has got to be the strongest motivation for winning that I can imagine. The very image is stupefying... or at least nauseating. If the Cardinals "back in" via Houston losses, they won't be whooping and hollering and tackling each other in the middle of the field.

It seems like the Cubs will know pretty soon how tough preventing this will be. At least with Prior going on Thursday they have a better chance to win than on average. It's almost enough to make me hope that the Cardinals win today with a Houston loss... not likely with Clemens pitching though.

I don't even want the possibility of a Wrigley celebration!

Not so
That's just wrong.  When you watch a Cubs game, if the Cubs can't win, don't you want to see history made?

I hope the Cardinals clinch against the Cubs, no?  With a perfect game thrown?

Oh, stop it...
... that's way different, and you know it.

Awww :)
How is it different?  I'm dead serious.

I don't ever want to see "my" team embarrassed.  However, if a person is willing to put "history" ahead of embarrassment, then why not hope to see a clinching?

I don't see a difference.

Because...
... you misunderstood, I think, my feeling about a no-hitter.

If the Cubs are losing, say, 1-0 or 2-0, and being no-hit, I want to see them break it up and win.

If it's 7-0 -- as it was against Derek Lowe -- and out of hand in the 2nd inning -- then why not?

A division clinching against the Cubs? No way. That's way different. See it any way you want, but that's how I feel.

If...
...the Cubs were no-hit every season, then fine.  But to have the longest non-no-hit streask in history is more "importnant."

Also, I never NEVER root for bad things to happen to "my" teams.  Unless it gets an idiot fired.  Like Wanny.

Also
With the Cubs down, say, 9-0 in 1989 to the Astros in the 6th, you were hoping for the no-no?  Musta pissed you off that they came back to win! :)

I'll tell you what I did that day...
... in those days, I worked evenings, and had to leave many games early. (Better to see six innings than none, I always said).

I had to leave when it was 9-0. I said "we'll get 'em tomorrow."

Sorry I missed the great comeback. And the Cubs already had some hits by that time.

by Al Yellon on Sep 14, 2005 2:21 PM CDT up reply actions

All the more reason...
...to never root for losing.  You like to say, "Anything can happen."

I have NO interest in seeing history
being made by another team AGAINST the Cubs.
I was in Philly last  year for Millwood's near no no and
believe me I was THRILLED when Corey broke it up
I enjoyed watching Randy Johnsons perfect game ON
TV AGAINST ANOTHER TEAM but have no desire to witness one in person against the Cubs under any
circumstances. I would be OK seeing a triple play or
something like that from another team against the Cubs
IF WE WON THE GAME.

I will wait to see Z pitch a no hitter next year( with
4 walks, a 2 hit batsman I suppose).

All I'm saying is...
that one of the best images I can call to mind is a photo taken in Montreal in 1989 when the Cubs clinched the division, and it was a full-page deal (in color) in the Trib I think, with some nice inspirational words typed in. You know, kind of like "here's to a team that never forgot to hit, field, win, lose, and celebrate like one" or something similar. My brother had that page laminated and I think he still has it hanging up somewhere.

I DON'T want to be able to call to mind a similar image of the Cardinals doing that with bricks and ivy in the background. Ugh... that would feel like getting kicked in the stomach after the way this season knocked me down.

Hey, the Cards clinching the division is sadly not "making history." They're actually making a rather bad habit of it lately. It's gonna happen. I just want it to happen somewhere else, or at least not while they are standing on this field that I love!
