Front Office Hang-outs?

Does anyone know where the front office staff tends to hang out after work?  Any particular bars, or restraunts?  Any help would be awesome...  Trying to do an interview for school, and calling and email get NOWHERE with the people.  I think I'll need to "accidentally" bump in to someone...

Any suggestions on where to go and who to look for?

I have no idea, but...
... the thing to do would be to hang out near the ballpark and watch where they go.

I have a feeling most of them just go home.

I agree with Al
I'm sure they all just go home to their multi Million Dollar homes and sleep like babies.

by SoBlueCal on Sep 22, 2005 4:57 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree as well, but...
I'd imagine many do go home... but there has almost GOT to be somewhere that a few go after work..
The weird thing is it seems as if NOBODY knows anyone on the inside.  I know people who know ALOT of people; yet NO ONE seems to know anyone in the Cubs Organization.  A mystery.

I'll ask around...
... at the ballpark this weekend.

by Al on Sep 22, 2005 5:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd appreciate it...
It really is to the point that it becomes bizarre...  I have gone through hell to get the inside number and left message after message with people to no avail.  I have sent emails that have not even garnished a basic response.  Just finding contact info is hard work enough, is a basic response really too much to ask?

by Yepsen on Sep 22, 2005 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

it depends who you are trying to contact
if you are leaving messages for whomever asking to speak to Jim Hendry or Andy MacPhail, then you will not get a reply.  You need an "in" as they get numerous requests like this and probably become numb in responding to them.

Maybe e-mail Sullivan from the Trib or Muskrat from mlb.com for a tip or point of contact?  Just a thought.

Different Era
Times have changed. One of my friends who has been a Cub fan since the mid-60's once wrote a letter to Bob Kennedy when he was the Cub's GM. It took a while, but Bob wrote back a 2 page hand-written letter in response. 1977 or 1978 I believe. He still has the letter. It was very kind and addressed most of the praises and concerns my friend wrote in the letter. Oh, for the days.....

Been there...
Done that...

I've used exact names and never so much as mentioned Jim Hendry or Andy McPhail.  Usually folks in the community relations or marketing departments.

Why
are you so interested?

by Ivychat on Sep 22, 2005 5:26 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Initially...
I was trying to do an interview for an assignment in class.  Then it became to try and establish contacts to increase my odds of obtaining an internship.  I figured if they have spoken with me once, I may have some advantage over those that they have never spoken to.

Marketing/Ad/PR is what I want to do, they are who I want to work for.  And as we all know: "It's not what you know, it's who you know."  And I am trying to get to know people.

by Yepsen on Sep 22, 2005 5:29 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I'd go about it a different way
Find a minor league team and get an in with them first.  They'll usually return inquiries.  Then use the contacts made in the minors to work your way up into the majors, just like a real ballplayer.

If it has to be the Cubs, I'd suggest the I-Cubs.  Otherwise, just start contacting every team in the Midwest league.

Everyone is trying to work in baseball these days, so you are going to have to take work where you can find it.

It's time to strangle your inner Neifi.

Actually...
I have a history of working in sports.  (Albeit rather unimpressive, it is there none-the-less) Also, I met the guy who had the internship before me and from what I gathered he didn't have any more experience than I have.

He was from Boston and was acually a Bo-Sox fan...  His is exact words I believe were "I've always kinda like the Cubs, but I'm really a Red Sox fan..." Sickening.

And why the hell should I not go for this one?  Sending in a Resume can not hurt me, I have a good one considering other college kid resumes I have seen.  I am not your average college senior in that respect.

As far as I am concerned, I have a good shot and I am going for it.

by Yepsen on Sep 22, 2005 7:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

since you are a college
senior perhaps some of the advice given may be helpful?  You apparently don't want any.  I think Josh brought up a valid point and he was not dismissing you.  Rather he was offering another solution if this opportunity never came to fruition.  I think this falls into "don't put all your eggs into 1 basket."

You should blast out a lot of resumes--MWL, ICubs, Bulls, Hawks, Sox, Bears, and keep pursuing the Cubs too.  Good luck, I hope it works out for you.  Let us know too as I would be curious to hear if the Cubs ever reply.

Oddly enough....
Things on the internet are often misunderstood.  The whole lack of abililty to acurately convey inflection is a real pain.  Often times people insert their own inflections to make someone sound like an ungreatfull jerk.

That is the case here it would appear.

I do want advice, and believe me I am looking.  I check daily on numerous web sites to find positions.  From the Jackhammers to (this would be hard) the White Sox. (Albeit trading on my upbrining).

I was merely trying to state that this is my position.  This is where I am going to go.  I will no soon enough whether or not too many eggs were placed in this basket, but I am by no means wanting to look back with the ability to think that maybe I didn't get the position due to my own faults.

All this started as was exactly that, trying to do everything I can to leverage myself into the best possbile position to get this internship.  Any and all advice is always accepted, that's why I came here.  I have been reading long enough to know that someone here would maybe be able to help.  Hence the posting.

Any and all advice welcome, I am open.  But it is right now time to risk being out-of-work for a month to maybe get the job I want.  I have been in jobs I've hated before... And seeing as I have no family to support: I'd rather be jobless.

And I truly believe I am a viable canidate for this position.  Thank you for your advice, and believe I do look.  If you see something I have not, please bring it to my attention.  I also have a history and degree in radio, and would love to get back into that especially in a promotional level.

So there, anyone know anyone hiring?

A tip
Following Jim Hendry into a bar with your resume: Bad idea.

by Ivychat on Sep 23, 2005 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm sure it's been reported
that's how Dusty got the job.  LOL!  :-)

by socalbob on Sep 23, 2005 3:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wasn't planning to do that.
I don't want Jim Hendry, and I wasn't going to go right up with a resume.  Moreso looking for someone in Community RElations or Marketing to start a small dialogue with and maybe hand a business card to.

I'm not oblivious on how and who to interact with.  I know a handfull of people who have gotten jobs exactly that way.

FYI...
... Cubs e-mail addresses have the general form:

firstinitiallastname@tribune.com

You could always try that.

by Al on Sep 23, 2005 6:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tried that with a couple of names
And unfortunatly it garnished no return.  I am working on a few other ways to get their attention and set me apart from the herd.

Wish me luck.

by Yepsen on Sep 23, 2005 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good luck!
... seriously.

by Al on Sep 23, 2005 7:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

FWIW Jepsen....
...it would be "garnered" no return as opposed to "garnish". If something was "garnished", it was decorated or embellished. Parsley on your plate, for example, is a "garnish". Or, your wages get garnished if you owe a debt. Then, it's an attachment, loosely in the same family as a decoration. If you "garnered" something, you earned it. As in someday, you hope to garner a baseball paycheck. Or a return phone call.

Somebody named...
... Mike Garman pitched for the Cubs in 1976.

Not particularly well, either (4.95 ERA), but he was later sent to the Dodgers with Rick Monday in the deal that netted the Cubs Bill Buckner and Ivan DeJesus.

by Al on Sep 24, 2005 10:51 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I remember that guy
He pitched for the Red Sox and Cardinals too. In today's baseball world, he'd be considered a prime set up guy, kind of like Timlin or somebody. Back then though, he barely was a blip.

I think the only logical conclusion
is that the cubs don't have a front office.  that might explain their record on the field as well ...

by kjk on Sep 23, 2005 11:14 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Very valid point...
That would explain just about everything.  Maybe there is just some ill-programed machine hidden in a closet somewhere in the Trib Tower making all of the calls.

Computers follow logic
To this extent, I see your theory impossible.
