Open Thread: Cubs vs. Pirates, Sunday 9/4

All of the big events for me and my family this weekend are over, with a great sense of joy and accomplishment.

Thus, I can sit and actually watch today's game...

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Jerome Williams
 J. Williams
Cubs
vs. Kip Wells
 K. Wells
Pirates
4-7 W-L 7-14
5.20 ERA 4.66
51 SO 117
34 BB 77
12 HR 19

... ugh. What an ugly pitching matchup this is. Williams was brutal in his last start, retiring the side in the first inning 1-2-3 and then pretty much throwing batting practice till he was yanked.

The Cubs pounded Wells at Wrigley Field on July 17, but his lifetime record against the Cubs is 3-2 with a 3.02 ERA in 13 career starts. This year, it's 0-2, 5.82, so who knows.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Well....
...let's pretend Williams always bounces back strong after a poor start. I have no idea if this is true, hence the pretend part. But I get the sneaky feeling the Cubs are starting to play some good baseball, albeit too late. Playing Cedeno and Murton seems to bring an energy that is palpable, and dammit, I wish Hank White could hit better on a regular basis, because he's very good behind the plate. Bengie Molina is a free agent after this year, and I'd like to see the Cubs go after him. Molina has suspect hammies, but he works well sharing time with his brother Jose now. He could do the same with Hank White. As for Barrett, maybe HE could play left field if Nomar doesn't. :)

Anybody want to bet the Cubs get about 3-4 games out of the wild card in a week or so and we get all riled up again for nothing?

I think...
Todd Walker said if they played well they might get back in it.  I expect things in order, and right now I'm expecting a winning season first.  It would still be nice to at least feel a little good these last few weeks. But yes, I agree that your prediction might happen.

Interesting...
Al you said that this was an ugly pitching matchup and it was.  I would have never guessed that this would have been a pitchers duel.

It's been working that way...
... most of the year... games wind up being the reverse of what I think.

Not quite sure what that says. Maybe it's another superstition waiting to happen.

Well then
just keep saying that the Cubs won't make the playoffs!

OT: David Terrell
was just released by NE.  The jerk couldn't even make their team as the 5th receiver, yet he was our #1 and taken 8th overall in the draft.  Another stellar indictment of the the Bears hierarchy.

Prediction:
Cedric Benson winds up becoming the next Curtis Enis or Rashaan Salaam.
