Open Thread: Cubs vs. Cardinals, Wednesday 9/7

After forty seasons, Busch Stadium will close forever at the end of 2005.

The Cubs won't miss it; from 1966 through yesterday they have a 140-190 record there -- a .424 winning percentage, though they in general play the Cardinals fairly even over a long period of time.

In the last ten seasons, from 1996 through yesterday's game, it's even worse: 20-51.

So, Cub fans, why not join in on the raffle to see who gets to push the button to blow the place up? I can just imagine the look on the Cardinals' officials' faces if a Cub fan won this and showed up in full Cubs garb. The raffle is open to residents of Missouri and Illinois, so if you live in one of those states, why not?

The math is simple: five starts left for Maddux, four wins needed to keep the 15-victory-season streak alive. He threw a CG win against St. Louis at Wrigley Field earlier this year.

Mulder's having a nice year but the Cubs beat the living daylights out of him in the same game in which Maddux threw his CG.

irking Cards fans

Having spent most of the past seven years in St. Louis, let me tell you how pissed their fans will be just because the Cubs had a winning record at Busch in its last season. they couldn't care less about the standings... oh well let's completely crush them in the last series at Wrigley and we'll consider it a small consolation to the season.

Maddux

Um sorry to intrude on these creative ideas for blowing up Busch but not only did Madog get his 12th but his 2006 option officially kicked in. YIPEE!!!. Yes I know many of you feel 9 million is a lot but over the life of the 3 year contract I think it will turn out to be a very fair deal. I would SERIOUSLY think about offering him an extention NOW to make sure he ends his career as a Cub. Maddux does not need the money and money is not going to be a factor in whether he decides to pitch in 2007. They could offer him a contract with a low guarantee but good incentives ( based on IP and POST season appearences). If he really runs down next year he will retire but if he kicks it up a notch and does a real physical regimin in the whole off season ( which trust me he does not really do) I think he could pitch a year or more after 2006. He is fairly similar in style to Moyer who shows little sign of slowing down.

I know we just have tons of great pitchers waiting to come up but I will take Maddux his
34 starts, 200 innings and e.r.a in the 4 to
4.5 range over these unproven guys ( maybe Dusty obsession with Vets got to me).

I think offering him an inexpensive extension
now would be smart baseball. If he decides
to retire after 2006, it would be great to get him in another capacity so I 'd like to keep on his
good side.

Spent the last couple of weeks

without an internet connection. It had nothing to do with a hurricane, so I really can't complain, but I will anyway. How the heck could we be a baseball fan without the internet? It's so lonely! Of course, the last time I was a Cub fan without an internet connection, I lived in the Midwest surrounded by Cub fans. I guess I just need to meet more real friends.

Exact same situation

Couldn't get the scores instantly either! And since I have MLB.tv, I couldn't watch any of the Cub games that weren't on WGN.

The day the internet changed my baseball life was Sept. 27, 1998. The Cubs had just blown the WC lead against the Astros and so I went to the internet to follow the play by play account of the Giants/Rockies game. No sooner do I hook up than Neifi Perez comes to bat. There's this long delay in reporting the score and then it finally says "Perez--HR."

Now he's getting us back for that moment of bliss he gave us.
