Double Play (Wed/Fri Day Games) Season Tickets

Update [2006-1-13 14:18:8 by AlSpangler]: Additional games are on April 11, May 2, May 18, June 15, July 20, August 3, August 24, September 7 and September 14 (Tuesdays and Thursday only). The Cubs' only Monday day games, Memorial Day & Labor Day, are not included.

--Original Message--

Nine additional games, on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons, will be offered as an option to those holding Double Play Season Tickets. You will need to take all nine games or pass on the offer.

If you have more than one seat, you will be allowed to purchase the extra games for only some of your seats.

I found this out while speaking with a Cubs ticket rep after someone holding the night/weekend season ticket package for my seats upgraded to a full-season package. I was bumped but actually ended up with better seats.

There are only 15 games in the 2006 Double Play package because there are only 3 Wednesday day games. Usually the Double Play Package had 21 to 24 games per season.

Difference Between Plans
The Combination Plan is 55 games, and the Double Play Plan is 15 games this year.  I've been wondering what happened to the other 11 -- looks like this would almost account for them.

This sounds like...
... a way to eventually, gently push all the partial plan holders into upgrading to full-season. I know that's what the Cubs want -- to eventually phase out the partial plans.

Dodgers marketers think differently
They seem to be expanding their season ticket package options which most of my Dodgers fan friends buy into because you don't need to take out a loan or collude with other interested parties to get a couple seats for the season.

For example, for $82 (a buck a game!) you get a seat for a full season - worse seats in the house and you'll need a good set of binoculars and not be afraid of heights - but affordable nonetheless.

Despite their dismal 2005 season I believe they set a new attendance record last year although I personally have never seen Dodger Stadium sell out.  On the other hand I've never seen Wrigley NOT sell out in recent years, especially since 2003.

I do recall the "good 'ol days" back in the '70s and '80s when 4,000 in the house was a great day for the box office.  That's when the marketing department could have used some creativity with their season ticket packages and promotions to sell those crappy Preston Gomez/Joey Amalfitano teams!

Dodger Stadium is larger than Wrigley Field...
... by a considerable margin -- it seats about 55,000, compared to Wrigley's 41,000.

Yes, that'll be about 41,000 capacity (a bit more with SRO tickets) in 2006, due to the expanded bleachers.

Still, with 14,000 more seats to be sold -- some of them, as you point out, in the fifth (yes, FIFTH) deck behind the plate (and I've sat there, and yes, it feels like you are watching the game from the moon), they can get creative with ticket packages.

Keep in mind that since 1993 (and before that in the AL), NL attendance figures have reflected tickets sold, not a turnstile count. There were quite a few late-season games in 2005 where sellouts (or near sellouts) were announced, but there were probably 10,000-15,000 no-shows.

I was able to uprgrade my...
season tickets this year from the combo plan to the daily plan.  I was unable to do so the past 3 years when i tried to upgrade them.

Either 1 of 2 things are happeneing.  Either there are a lot of people cancelling their seasons this year (I doubt) or they are going to have many less tickets availible for the on sale in Feb, due to people upgrading their packages (me thinks).

I have heard of at least 5 frinds who have upgraded now.

Well, as I said...
... they are trying to wean people away from the partial plans onto full plans, and I think you are right, that means fewer tickets available for the February sale.

Keep in mind that your combo plan, which includes weekends & night games, is approximately 54 games this year. That leaves only weekday afternoon games out -- theoretically, the least desirable dates (except for Fridays, which can also be very popular).

My family...
Also upgraded to full season tickets this year. But I believe we were able to do this because many people cancelled their packages. A number of people who sat in our section did not come back. Al, could you e-mail me about this?
