cubs still alive with Zito and Tejada

Our favorite site has posted a new article stating the cubs are still very much alive in acquiring zito, and that the Tejada trade is not dead.  Seems that the A's like the Cubs farm system and are looking not to get matt murton, but a couple of y9oug pitchers.  Take a  look for yourself.

the big if....
if the rumor about zito is even remotely true, i hope hendry jumps all over it.  as far as tejada, i dont want to give anything of remote value to baltimore anymore, even for tejada.

Agreed.
The Orioles are pathetic.

I used to love going to Camden Yards.  The fans in Baltimore deserve better.  The O's management disgraces a terrific tradition, and they should be ashamed of themselves.

I am all
for Zito becoming a Cub if we have to give up Hill, who is about the same age as Zito and its basicly that were trading curveball for curveball, Sean Marshall, and Guzman.  Guzman has had too many injuries and his stock has dropped considerably.

As for Tejada... I am not for giving up Pie, Murton, Harvey for a declining short stop who DOES have the cabibility of hitting 40 HR 150+ RBI's but we already have 2 guys that can do that..and we dont need another power bat.

This confirms....
... what my sources have told me; both of these deals are still possible, but it won't be both. It'll be one or the other.

Billy Beane's pretty shrewd. He'll want to get value for Zito just as he did for Tim Hudson and Mark Mulder.

Again, I would NOT make this deal unless the Cubs are certain they can sign Zito to an extension. Zito is a Scott Boras client, which might scare other teams away, but Jim Hendry has always had a good relationship with Boras. Zito won't come cheap, but he is worth it.

If I had to choose one of the two, I'd choose Zito, and I think he could be acquired without giving up anyone currently expected to make the 2006 25-man roster.

by Al on Jan 2, 2006 8:56 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

i
think Zito's agent is Arn Tellem. Not sure what he's like to deal with. He's at least not as famously difficult to deal with as Boras.

If you are an agent, related to an agent...
are married to an agent, or have good friends who are agents, please don't read this.

I despise agents.  I think they are scum.  They are ruining the game that we all love.

Whew.  Got that off my chest.

Correct me if I'm wrong...
..but isn't Zito a fly ball pitcher? Really surprised to see so many posters willing to give up such prospects for a Pitcher who wouldn't fit in Wrigley (or Pit or Cin or Mil or Hou).

I'd rather they give up those prospects for Tejada. No brainer to me, but that's just my opinion.

fwiw
paul sullivan says they haven't talked in a month, contrary to the kaplan report on espn radio.

Again, I would NOT make this deal unless the Cubs are certain they can sign Zito to an extension.

tellem is going to make that horse drink. zito has gone on record saying he wants to test the water -- and why not? he'll almost surely be the hottest property on the market. if tellem took mussina to free agency away from his beloved baltimore, zito will be out there.

moreover, beane reportedly wants a major-league starting pitcher (after all, they're positioned to win the al west as is) and a top prospect.

it would be one thing if the cubs were one pitcher away -- but man, they just aren't. two zitos and they would still be in trouble with the way the bullpen and bottom half of the order look.

zito's a great pitcher. but the cubs simply shouldn't do this. renting zito for a year in which you aren't going anywhere isn't worth what beane is asking.

by gaius marius on Jan 3, 2006 10:47 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

no extension talk allowed
moreover, the a's have refused zito permission to negotiate contract extension outlines with other teams.
Teams -- including the Rangers and Mets -- interested in Zito would want a window to negotiate an extension so they wouldn't be stuck with a one-year player. But the A's, Forst said, wouldn't allow it. They didn't allow it for Hudson and Mulder, either.

"There are enough teams interested in Barry Zito," said Forst, explaining why the privilege wouldn't be extended. "It hasn't come up in any conversations we've had."

by gaius marius on Jan 3, 2006 10:56 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I think...
If they are willing to deal him...and we need a starter to offer up in addition to a couple of prospects, then dump Williams. Goa fter another starter then we please.  Then I would hope that Zito would experience all the success and fan adoration that he would need to stay in Chicago...and then work out a deal for multi-year if so desired.
Anyone can have a bad century...

by Kinky Reggae on Jan 3, 2006 11:16 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

so wait
what you're saying is that the A's refuse to let anyone who gets Zito talk him into an extension?
2006 -- AC036097 -- Eamus Catuli!

by priorpwnz on Jan 3, 2006 11:16 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

yes, before the actual trade
until he's traded, he is under contract to the a's -- negotiating with him would be tampering.

by gaius marius on Jan 3, 2006 12:16 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

so, if you trade for him
you'll have to do it with absolutely no idea of where zito stands on an extension.

by gaius marius on Jan 3, 2006 12:17 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That is so stupid.
Why would they do this?  It only decreases Zito's value to other teams!!

by nickler on Jan 3, 2006 12:24 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

hard to say
but it does rather better work as a bargaining ship once you've proved its worth. i don't think mulder or hudson ever were allowed to negotiate, though.

by gaius marius on Jan 3, 2006 12:50 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I realize
the tampering thing, however, once Zito is traded (if and when) this does not mean that the team who has aquired him cannot go into talks about an extension, or does it?
2006 -- AC036097 -- Eamus Catuli!

by priorpwnz on Jan 3, 2006 1:21 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

you're right
once traded, his rights become the acquiring team's. when hudson, for example, was traded to the braves in december 2004, they started to negotiate an extension, which they completed two months later ($47mm/4-yr with a $12mm mutual option in 2010).

but it was rather a blind leap on the braves' part, and that's what we won't know about zito until after the trade (if it were to happen).

by gaius marius on Jan 3, 2006 1:44 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

gotcha
that's what I found kind of weird. I thought you were saying that once aquired they could not go into negotiation, I sat there thinking for a minute, "wait a minute, says who?"
2006 -- AC036097 -- Eamus Catuli!

by priorpwnz on Jan 3, 2006 4:32 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

But
if Zito COULD be signed to an extension before being traded, don't you think the A's could get a lot more in return.  As an example, I don't think the Cubs would sign Zito unless we could get a contract extension so he wouldn't be a rent-a-player thereby potentially ruining any deal we give the A's or detracting from what we're willing to give up.

Why would they enforce this?  It only hurts the A's.  It makes absolutely no sense to me.

by nickler on Jan 3, 2006 5:23 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Well...
... yes, it would be a leap to do it, because you are correct, in MLB you cannot do a sign-and-trade as you can in the NBA (and why not? This might be a good negotiating point in the next basic agreement).

Nevertheless, if the Cubs were to trade for Zito I believe that they would do exactly what the Braves did with Hudson. Whether they would succeed or not, is another story, but I can't see them making this deal unless they thought there was a pretty good chance of signing him.

by Al on Jan 3, 2006 7:47 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

i'd have more faith
in that if zito weren't keeping company with arn tellem. i remember being shocked that he talked mussina into forsaking his beloved baltimore in 2000.

in the end, big agents make big money by taking big players to market. i'd be very surprised if zito didn't end up doing exactly that.

by gaius marius on Jan 4, 2006 11:36 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

You may very well be right...
... but this is a chance I'd like Hendry to take. To get a talent like Zito, even if it's for only a year, is worth it -- and then you've got the first shot at keeping him, by offering arbitration.

by Al on Jan 4, 2006 1:28 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

you could be right
after all, what the cubs would have to give up isn't the 1927 yankees. and zito is an immaculate talent.

however, with this team at this point, i'd rather take my chances with rich hill and matt murton. many people don't realize it yet, but 2006 is over and probably 2007 as well. winning teams are almost invariably built in november and december of the year before, and the cubs simply haven't built one.

might as well see if these two, along with jerome williams, can be parts of the new core of cub players for 2008 that will emerge when this core -- lee, aramis, prior, wood, barrett -- are (probably) broken up so some extent following this year.

by gaius marius on Jan 4, 2006 2:22 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

WOW.
Al, Gaius Marius actually AGREED with you.  Somewhat.  Now he's saying we should stick to our young talent.  So I guess Hendry isn't stupid.  The Cubs don't suck...

I am spinning out of control... the disparate logic swirling under my feet, taking me under... Can't seem... to... get.. out....

Help... Rondell...

by nickler on Jan 4, 2006 6:20 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Well...
I'm one of those that overrates prospects and stuff.  I liked Ricky Nolasco and he's gone because of Juan Pierre.

I like Sean Marshall. If he's gone I'll be sad, but I wont cry about it.  Zito is a horse and a proven lefty. But like Al says, only if we can sign Zito to an extension.

No to Tejada.

Cubbie Blue always sPaRkLes in my eyes. Time to sPaRkLe Jimmy!

But Sparkles...
I think it was worth getting Pierre, don't you?  He's pretty cheap, and we'll be able to get his contract extended.  And the boy is lethal.

by nickler on Jan 3, 2006 12:17 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Aaaaaaaaaaah!
Soory, just had to do that (think Cameron in Ferris Bueller's Day Off). Wish Hendry would just make a move, so we could go on, preferably one with Zito and another that doesn't include Preston Wilson. By the way, winter rumors are almost as bad as the WNBA. You don't want to watch, yet you somehow find yourself going back to see what's going on. For what reason I'm not sure.

Rumored snag in Manny-Tejada deal
XM just passed on a rumor that Manny would only go to Baltimore if they kicked in the 20 million a year options for '09 and '10 that are built into his contract.
