Most Hated Team (MHT)

I was wondering, on this post, who your Most Hated Teams are.

For me it's as follows.

  1.  Yankees.  They are destroying baseball.  Steinbrenner is evil incarnate.  They are the team of the Devil.  Baseball would be better off if they were obliterated off the earth.
  2.  Giants.  For all the times they broke my heart.  And Bonds is a jerk.
  3.  Mets.  That has to be the lamest name I have ever heard, I still don't know what in the sam hill that is supposed to mean. And I am disgusted at how they are paying for a championship right now a la the Yankees.  I hope their farm system never recovers and that they are left with a lot of aging, lame players.  And I was in KC when Beltran was there, he's pretty good but not $120 mill dollars good, believe me on that one.  We're better off with Pierre.
  4.  Braves.  You have to admire their ability to keep winning on a limited payroll, but I'm getting pretty sick of them and their obnoxious "fans" who think they are superior to everyone else.  And the thought of Maddux in Braves gear still sends shivers down my spine.
  5.  Cardinals.  I actually admire them a lot and like the fact that they are from the Midwest representing a smaller market.  But they JUST KEEP BEATING US and I am getting sick of it.
  6.  Padres.  I'll never forgive them for what they did to us, even though it's kind of hard to hate them now as they are so pathetic.  And they have the lamest uniform in the National League (what the heck is that thing on their uniform supposed to be?  A home plate with water splashing on it??)  Yes, I know they made the playoffs last year.  But they are still pathetic.  Didn't they just deal for Chan Ho Park?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

you're right Nick, we did post a winning season against those...well you get the idea.

I think it was like 12-8 or something.

I believe the name would've been Metropolitans but it was shortened down to Mets, correct? I can't remember.

It seems to have slipped my memory or just never resided there.

by cubbybear on Jan 3, 2006 3:29 AM CST up reply actions

I think it means
"underwear" or "shorts"

That's a pretty lame name too.  But surprisingly fitting.

I realize that "Mets" is short for "Metropolitans" but to name your team after "city dwellers"?  That is just unbelievably lame.

They are the Montreal Canadiens of baseball.

by nickler on Jan 3, 2006 7:01 AM CST up reply actions

Knickerbocker
refers to pants that Dutch settlers wore, then the term took on the meaning of the Dutch settlers themselves.  the term was further solidified in washington irving's story "Diedrich Knickerbocker's History of New York" a story which helped promote the Dutch version of Saint Nicholas to new worlders.

Teams I hate
  1. Cardinals: well, duh
  2. Astros: See above
  3. Mets: Because of 1969...it may have been before my time, but I come from a long line of Cubs fans, and I've heard about that plenty
  4. Reds: after hearing Adam Dunn (or maybe it was Sean Casey) talk about being glad they could be spoilers in the last week of 2004, when we choked in the Wild Card race...that and because they always give us more trouble than we should let them

by Perkins on Jan 3, 2006 2:32 AM CST reply actions

MHT
  1.  Yankees-the only thing good is the idea that the Cubs could one day beat them in the series, and thereby put all the planets back in the correct orbit, or the wrong one, but baseball would breathe a sigh of relief regardless.
  2.  Cardinals-are all their prospects and acquisitions just sprinkled with fairy dust?  Someone should look into this.
  3.  Red Sox-They tried to make it look like they have it worse than the Cubs, because they got so close so many times.  I revile their championship save for the fact that it will shut them up(for a while, at least).  The Damon stuff just shows how pampered they are.  They didn't give him as much, and he was too big to let go, and they didn't get it.  Here's to the Damon curse for another several decades.

by cubbybear on Jan 3, 2006 3:37 AM CST reply actions

unfortunately it didn't shut them up
the Red Sox fans and Boston media are possibly worse now than before they won.  but thats partially fueled by the team because Larry Lucchino is, among other things, an attention seeking drama queen.  They have press conferences here to discuss the most ridicualous things

I used to like the Red Sox, but I gotta say that after living in Boston for a while I am starting to become very bitter towards them, which makes me a true Bostonian, we have to bitter about something

by flyball on Jan 3, 2006 11:04 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed
I'm not sure why anyone here roots or has anything positive to say about the Red Sox. To me, they and their fans have become amongst the most puke inducing elements in professional sports over the past year and a half. Their winning a World Series changed them to a fandom who have become egotistical, acting as if they have won the last 50 World Series. Red Sox fans have turned into Yankee fans. And now the fans of both teams truely believe that baseball would not function without the Red Sox - Yankees Rivalry.

The Mets have always been at the top of my list of teams I dislike (I don't like the word "hate", it's pretty strong). During the '80s, when I really became a baseball fan, the Cubs - Mets rivalry was more dominant, IMO, than the Cubs - Cardinals.

Now not to turn this into a positive thread, but anyone care to contribute the other baseball teams that they like to see win?

I'd have to put the Twins at the top of the list. I love the Twin Cities, saw a lot of games in the dome over the years and like them a lot.

Ok I Still love the Bosox
Can't help in Dan. I pretty much always did
and living in  New York has made it stronger.
Their fans are morose but dedicated. I do NOT
find them egotistical, insecure is more like it.
They are still the anti-Yankees and that is good
enough for me

As for other teams.
Well until relatively recently I really liked
the Giants , now I am merely fond of them
I also used to like the Expos but not now
that they moved.
For the AL I have always liked the Royals
& Indians but the Twins are nice too
Growing up I hated the Reds but I grew out
of that.

At this exact moment...
..I gotta say my most hated team is the Cubs.

The developements over the last couple months have pushed me so close to the edge of abandoning my loyalty to this team. I had a lot of faith in the organization this year to do what needed to be done to make this team a WS contender and they again, fell WELL short.

As a lifelong fan (over 30 years) I've never felt so betrayed by this organization and that's saying A LOT. I've also never been so embarrassed to be a Cubs fan, which again, is saying A LOT. I can't even muster up enough courage to wear 1 of my 20 + Cub hats or countless number of T-Shirts and Jerseys.

I'm also shocked to see so many so excited about attending the Convention in 2 weeks. If I did attend, it would be for 1 purpose and that would be to ask Hendry and MacFAIL how they can sleep at night.

by SoBlueCal on Jan 3, 2006 4:35 AM CST reply actions

Come on now.
There's always hope.

Even IF 2006 doesn't pan out, just think about 2007.  Murton and Pie will be more than ready.  We'll lose Wood and Maddux and pay for 2 elite pitchers.  Cedeno will be seasoned.

And that's not to say I'm giving up on 2006.

Don't worry be happy :)

by nickler on Jan 3, 2006 7:03 AM CST up reply actions

I am surprised
so few of you chose the Giants.

I still can't look at their ugly orange and black uniform and forget the past... getting flashbacks...

by nickler on Jan 3, 2006 7:04 AM CST reply actions

No reason at all to hate the Giants
Bonds is annoying but they are a nice team
with a manager I have a lot of respect for
Great ballpark & fans. There was no particular
animosity between the teams when they beat in
89 and I can't hate every team that beats us.
Also the Giant fans were great when Maddux
won #300 there.

Teams I hate

  1. Cardinals
  2. White Sox
  3. Mets
  4. Yankees
  5. Dodgers
A lot of Cub fans hate the Braves. For obvious
reasons I never did. Best orginization in baseball
though there fans don't deserve them. I am
basically too old to hate the Astros. We older
folks still think of the METS as our evil divisional
rival. I ain't changing.

  1. White Sox

  6. Did I say White Sox?

by Kinky Reggae on Jan 3, 2006 8:48 AM CST reply actions

Lets see...
  1. Cardinals.  It's been bred into my blood to hate the Redbirds.  It's the kind of irrational, knee-jerk hatred that makes it impossible for me to look at that team and judge any of their players rationally.  I doesn't help matters that even when the Cubs were in second place this year, it was like looking up at the Cards from the bottom of a deep well.
  2. Braves.  Just because they manage to make the playoffs every damn year.
3.4(Tie). Yankees and Red Sox.  Enough already.  They hate each other.  We get it.

5. Reds.  It's just so frustrating how they were able to beat the Cubs both at home and away while playing punching bag to every other team in the NL.  WHY!?

by jasoniniowa on Jan 3, 2006 8:56 AM CST reply actions

Believe it or not...
... I don't HATE the Cardinals.

I respect them as a rival; they have fans who love the game and love their team, and I have had terrific conversations about baseball at Wrigley Field with people from St. Louis.

For me, it's got to be the Yankees and Mets. I think the reasons ought to be obvious.

by jessica on Jan 3, 2006 10:05 AM CST up reply actions

That's what I was thinking.....
My most hated:
  1. Cardinals (Tie)
  2. White Sox (Tie)
  3. Mets (because of 1969)
  4. Dodgers (they were always on the game of the week)

by LT on Jan 3, 2006 11:16 AM CST up reply actions

There is no reason.............
........to hate the ChiSux because they are not a rival to the Cubs.  Until we start facing them in late October year after year (and they beat us!), there is really no good reason to give a damn about their team or its actions.

However, the Cardinals are a NECESSARY target for the hatred of Cubs fans.  The fact that they have been successful while we have wallowed in a sea of failure should be enough, but the "US 66" connection makes it all the more easy.  I've spent more time than most with their fans, and while some are knowledgable, most are just drinking the red koolaid.  Many would never consider criticizing their beloved Cards team.  That kind of blind devotion with lack of baseball sense gives me even more reason to hope they lose all 162.

Without a doubt the Cards occupy all 10 spots on my Top Ten Hated list.  If we move outside of baseball, then Notre Dame shares half the time with Illinois.  Can't stand either program.

by tville on Jan 3, 2006 8:45 PM CST up reply actions

Why do you hate Notre Dame?
They have a wonderful tradition of drafting good students, producing solid citizens, and keeping excellent team chemistry that often trandescends individual athleticism.

I love Notre Dame and have nothing but the deepest respect for them.  I feel the same way about Duke.

by nickler on Jan 3, 2006 8:48 PM CST up reply actions

Let's just say..........
.........by my attending a rival (at the time) Catholic university, it makes it impossible for me to accept their arrogance.

I'd rather have a sister in a brothel than a brother attend ND!

by tville on Jan 3, 2006 9:00 PM CST up reply actions

Here's Why
http://tinyurl.com/7ddek

Because those who are a part of Notre Dame think that they are entitled to have everything they want.  The essence of their letter was that while other teams and schools may have downturns, Notre Dame isn't supposed to. They're beyond having a season or two where they school doesn't go to a top bowl. Hell, this is a team that turned down a bowl appearance because it wasn't good enough for them.

I try to dislike the Cards...
but they are a class organization.  Their teams in the '80s and the present teams have played great baseball.  The fans are great and I can't wait to see the new park.

My most hated team is the Mets.  In addition to '69, the 80's and 90's were filled with bitter contest between them and our Cubs.  I also hold some hatred for the Reds going back to the 70's beatings they threw on the Cubs.  And, finally, I hate the thought of Steve Garvey in a Padres uniform. (I have gotten over disliking the team.)

by greggie44 on Jan 3, 2006 12:27 PM CST up reply actions

I only despise one team
the CARDINALS.  Now most of my friends are Cards fans and all I hear is how good they are when they do well and not a peep when they do bad.  I don't like it when the fans rub it in my face when the Cards win and can't take a ribbing when they lose.  In my opinion they are big babies.  Although, as Al pointed out - they are usually knowledgeable and loyal fans.

I also hate it when the Cubs play the Mets.  Regardless of how awful their record might be it seems that they beat us in their poor excuse for a stadium - although I do like the apple in the outfield.

Astros, I wish DLee would hit a liner off Oswalt's cocky skull.
Mets, I just don't like them.

Yeah, but that's the funny thing; even Ozzie said that they'd have to win it 7 times in a row before anything would change, 'cause Chicago has always been (and always will be) a Cubs town. Frankly, even though their fans are probably the most annoying (other than Red Sox and Yankees fans) I've ever met, I just have to laugh because they're always going to be second fiddle to the Cubbies.

Every time that chump steps up to the plate, I wish I were close enough to tell him where to stick his bat.  And then there is the fact that he is an incredible baseball player and does it all so easily and effort-free in CF which makes you glad you weren't in ear shot. He makes me sick!

Again, I never went to school in LA or California for that matter, so I don't know...I do know it's very expensive and it's in LA.  Some seem to think you'd only go to USC if you didn't get into UCLA (that's not what I think per se, just what some out there have said before).

Ergo the "University of Spoiled Children" monniker (not necessarily rightfully deserved) since those same people would suggest it's for kids who really want to live in LA but did not get accepted to UCLA.

Again, not my opinions, just an explanation.

1.) White Sox. Maybe if their fan base wasn't as rabid as they are I'd be cool with them. Paul Konerko said it last year and it will ring true for all of Chicago's history, no matter what the Sox do they'll always be second fiddle to the Cubs. Ozzie Guillen's whining, their PR. 'Hawk'. Hate it all.

2.) Marlins. 10/16/03 'nuff said. Plus what's with the teal?

3.) Cardinals. Don't much care of LaRussa, Pujols nor Rolen. Don't much care for their fans.

4.) Dodgers. Signing randomly anything this winter for the sake of it being a splash. Clearly no idea what's going on.

5.) Yankees. Evil personifies itself in the NYY.

  2. White Sox. Why did they have to win the WS FIRST???? (in my lifetime).  And why is everyone in my family an f'n Sux fan anyway?  Yes, I'm jealous.
  3. Cardinals.  Hate the team but love the rivalry.  Wasn't it sweet winning the season series from these posers last year and then watching them crash and burn in the NLCS?
  4. Red Sox & Yankees - Overhyped and overpaid with collectively the most obnoxious fans (and owners) in baseball. These teams are very easy for most everyone besides their mindless fans to hate.

No doubt
  1. White Sox-totally respect the job Kenny Williams has done but it's those fans who make me crazy. Such an inferiority complex and so obsessed with the Tribune company and their perceived lack of coverage.
  2. Astros-Have never ever warmed up to this team.  Even those teams of the '80's were so tough to like. It seemed like their players were all the same.  Terry Puhl, Denny Wahling, Alan Ashby, etc. They were so non-descript.  I also hate the fact that in 2004 the Cubs let the Astros back in when they came to Wrigley and took care of business
  3. Marlins and Diamondbacks.  Not sure I hate them but I hate the fact that they have a World Series title in such a short amount of time.
Totally agree with Al.  I respect the Cardinals and their fans.

Diamondbacks
I was living in Phoenix when the Diamondbacks came into existence.  This caused the local radio station to drop the Cubs broadcasts.  I will never forgive them for that.

Also, I worked at a bar two blocks from BOB and watched the fake fans leave in the seventh inning of every game to beat traffic.

Most Hated
White Sox. No other team is even close at this point. The fans have become insufferable since winning and it will be a long year for us if Hendry and Co. don't do something soon!

Hate...
  1. Yankees - I just can't take them anymore
  2. White Sox - what kind of team can't fill their stands on their way to a 99 win season.  I have nothing but respect for the team itself and their mentality - although Ozzie greats on me - but come on people, show up and cheer on your team.
  3. Marlins - too much success to soon (I'm jealous).  Also: see White Sox.
  4. Barry Bonds - I want someone completely legit (not just court determined legit - my own bias) to overtake Ruth and Aaron.

I HATE
the Yankees.  Cant stand a thing about that team or owner, worse thing in baseball.  I dont dislike the Cardinals (although I hate their manager) the team is made up of some really good guys and the fans are great.  I have seen many games in St. Louis with my Cubs gear on and although there was trash talking going on, it was never personal and always fun.
First Boston, then the White Sox, its now the Cubs turn.

YANKEES
I have a buddy, one with a greater knowledge of baseball than the casual fan, who is a Yanks fan. All the time we get into these lengthy discussions about how the Yankees represent more than just a team that consistently wins baseball games.

I tell him what they symbolize: A hiearchy order of injustice and ruthless capitalism. A sports team that represents the cycle seen throughout politics, starwars, oppression, and corporate capitalism. They are more than just a rich team, they are what is wrong with this country. A pompous musky odor of evil. The WTO and Wal Mart all rolled into one giant machine....

Then my buddies counter balance my opinion with his statement:

"The Yankees, bro, are the WWII heroes.... The history: The Banbino, Yougi Berra, Jeter...... The pinstrips, which are the best looking and most feared uniform on the planet......twenty something championships....greastest franchise of any sport......", yada, yada, yada.

It's repugnant. I can't stand the team and their fans. What I hate most is how they're always talking about how many championships they have and how many the Cubs don't have.

That's the difference from MOST Cubs fans and MOST Yankee fans. We believe in hope and prevailing and fighting. Yanks fans believe they are gods gift to baseball.

Oh and another reason I hate the Yankees: CRYBABY Alex Rodriguez. THERE IS NO SLAPPING IN BASEBALL!

My friend
has ordered me a T-shirt in Boston which reads, "A-Rod slaps balls."

Can't wait to wear it!

T-Shirt
Saw one last year at Wrigley that said

"Yankees suck" on the front and

"Jeter swal@#$!%s" on the back only without the symbols.

I loved it, but would never wear it.

I used to like...
A-Rod.  But when he did the slapping, I took him of my likeable people list immediately.

Absolutely.
It is definitely not cool to slap at another guy's ball, even if it's protected in his glove.

by nickler on Jan 3, 2006 5:45 PM CST up reply actions

Tough question..
since I'm not a very hateful person.

But I have to say the White Sox. But hey, I got quoted in an article because of them.

I don't hate the Cards either. Although I don't like LaRussa.  I like both of the rivalries though.

there are only two teams I hate
  1. Astros
  2. Mets (mainly for historical reasons)
to give us the required 5 I'll add 3 teams I dislike:
  1. Giants
  2. Phillies
  3. Dodgers (Jeff Kent brings every team down a notch)

WHY
does everyone hate Jeff Kent?

Milton Bradley trashed the guy and called him a racist.  MB is also a crazy man.

Why does that make Jeff Kent a bad guy??

by nickler on Jan 3, 2006 5:45 PM CST reply actions

don't know why...
I never really liked Kent - most likely irrational; just seemed like he set the an ugly tone at Houston (of course I only watch games in which the they were playing the Cubs). Also, to my knowledge Bradley never called him a racist. He just said that Kent "didn't get relate well with african-american players."

Of course my dislike for Kent doesn't come close to that of Oswalt.

I also hate
EVERY SINGLE NEW YORK SPORTS
TEAM ( and I have lived here for 15 years)
To be fair I don't think enough of Rangers
or Islanders to care but all NYC MLB,
NBA & NFL teams I hate.

In a  related I hate the Yankees story
There is great story about a die-hard
Red Sox fan who got  Damon to sign
a card for him MANY years ago at
a show. It was when Damon was a Royal
and the Boston fan got him to scrawl
'YANKEES SUCK  JOHNNY DAMON"
on the Damon Royals card. Copies of it
are now the rage in Boston. I am sure
it will be on T Shirts if it is not already

man
if I were Damon and I knew I had to go back to Fenway for a series, I would hire Shaolin Masters for bodygaurds.
