Piniella rules out Giants job.

I just heard on ESPN radio that Lou Piniella has ruled out being considered for the Giants job due to the distance from his home in Tampa. I guess that just leaves the Cubs for him. I will give any manager a chance, but I'm not a big fan of Sweet Lou.

Exciting stuff
Hopefully A-Ram won't walk and Hendry steals some of Gandalf's power to make something happen with trades and FA's.

I don't think
Gandalf's power could do anything for him at this point.

I'm still trying to
understand what Piniella's obsesssion with coming here is?

But here's the deal.  In my experience, this is the vicious circle that Cubs fans I know go through.

Year one:  Aww man, this manager SUCKS! Give us a new one!
Year two:  Yeah! New manager! Woo hoo! Looky at us! We did well! All hail the new manager!
Year three-??:  Bummer, it was an alright year, but it's not his fault.....
Year after that: Yes it is!! I hate that guy! Give us a new manager!!

So maybe getting a guy we don't like will at the very least be a break in routine, which is good to prevent Alzheimer's.  Which is why I brush my hair with my left hand.

Maybe
Piniella knows something that we don't.  Could have been something Hendry told him during the interview that's being kept on the down low.  Could it be a higher payroll?  We really aren't that far away from being a contender and it could very well happen this off season if Hendry had the cash and could get off his ass to make a really good trade or two and a few FA signings.

I agree,
We are not light years away from being a contender, as some would like us to believe.  But so far, it seems the "challenge" is the only thing Piniella is citing as his reason for coming here? Am I the only one that's insulted by that?

I'd love to hear better reasons from this guy. If nothing else, it will sit better with fans everywhere to have a manager with strategic vision, rather than one who is altruistically taking on a charity case.

Is he saying he's good at taking on challenges?? I'd like to hear why he thinks that HE HIMSELF will make the perfect fit for the ballclub at his disposal, granted he is hired.  I don't want to hear about what he will do with offseason signings.  I want to know what he can do with what he has, how he will work with the guys, how he will handle the staff, how his managerial skills can inspire what was a mediocre team to excellence.  I'm not interested in his taking on a challenge.

I think we're just
doing nothing but wasting our time even discussing it.

Hendry will most likely blow it like he always does.  We can get on our with our lives while watching the Cubs suck from April through September just like this year.

Sigh

we still have our youth :)

Well, I do at least, you're almost 25 and it's all down creek from there.

Better start
acting wild while you still can.  I'm too busy with school to do so and will be left with far too few college memories worth saving.

Mais c'est la vie.

I'll be at the library for five or so hours tomorrow though.  Maybe more.

Oh how much fun youth is.

What?
There's no cycle that i can see.

Baker was here 4 years.
Baylor was here 2.5 years
Riggleman--5 (best season as manager in 4th season)
Treblehorn--1
Lefebvre--2
Zimmer--3.5

I think this cycle is just from how damn long the last 4 years seem.  They didn't go too fast with Dusty.

And I was kind of kidding around. Like Colossus said, easing the pain.

They should have stuck with Zimmer
I have no other real point here.  I just wish they would have stuck with Don.

IMO, Bochy seems like the best
choice. He is a smart baseball man, that understands fundamental baseball and the importance of OBP (unlike someone that rhymes with "Rusty" Baker,) and with the talent and payroll the Padres have had to work with? It's a wonder he had a .494 winning % in 12 seasons there!
Good pitching always beats good hitting.....just ask Joe Torre.

The more I read about Bochy...
... the more I like him. I'm still not sold, but neither am I against him.

Why the Cubs and not the Nationals?
Supposedly Piniella has told the Nationals he doesn't want to coach there because it is a rebuilding job.  How exactly does one consider the Nationals a rebuilding operation when their record was 71-91, a mere 20 games under .500, and NOT consider the Cubs a rebuilding organization at 66-96?

If he really doesn't want to go to a rebuilding team, turning down the Giants, Cubs, and Nats makes sense.  In that case, he should hold out for another year until Torre's contract expires and then see if King George will bring him back to New York.  But to consider the state of our poor Cubs any different from that of the Giants and Nationals is delusional.

by SiValleyCubFan on Oct 14, 2006 12:13 AM CDT reply actions

Lou
Is obviously not going to say much about all his reasons for being interested in the Cubs' job, so why so much speculation? I'll admit I'm a Girardi fan, but Lou isn't a bad coach. Many San Diego fans don't think Bochy is a good motivator. I personally don't know much about to know if that's true or not. But let's not kid ourselves. Lou had won at more places than any manager in baseball. Every GM will tell you Lou's one of the best in the game. I'll take their word over the fans' any day. As I've said before, I don't know if he's the best coach or the best fit for the Cubs' job, but to say he's not a good manager is a joke. And to say he's not one of the best motivators out there is a joke. Dusty was one of the worst motivators I've ever seen. I hope Girardi get's the job, but Hendry doesn't seem to feel the same way. Joe is an outstanding fit for us IMO, but if we have to settle for Lou that's ok. IMO, both will help us win again. As bad as we were this past year, let's face it, we could contend for the division title next year with the addition of several big-time FA's because the central division is so medicore. St. Louis is getting older and older. We did this in 2003 after a bad year in 2002, and it could happen again if several things fall into place. The central division is pretty crappy.
