Congratulations Mark on your baby girl!! Atleast you were smart enough to have it in the offseason unlike Dempster :)

Story about Mrs. Prior---
Long story long, my father and I travel to Arizona every year for spring training.  One game this past year at HoHoKam, the Cubs Wives' Organization was doing their annual drive for charity by selling used game equipment.  One kid - late teens, early 20s at most - was standing next to us as I browsed cracked bats.  Across the table from us were all the players' wives (75% of them runway-model-quality).  I figured one to be Zambrano's wife (was wearing a Z jersey), Prior's wife (wearing a BP jacket), and a few others.

Back to the kid.  Early 20s or so, decked out in Cubbie gear to a T - suspenders, jacked up tapered jeans, autograph books, pimpled faced, the works. The only thing missing were glasses.  I joke you not, this boy was decked out in 100% "nerd" gear.  I'm all for die-hard Cubs fans but to but it short, this kid was going a bit over the line of "hard core".  As a note, please know this boy had the highest pitched, nerd-iest voice I've ever heard.  Right before my eyes he raised his hand, got the attention of Mrs. Prior and here is the ensuing conversation:

Pimple Boy: "Excuse me, are you Mrs. Mark Prior?!"
Mrs. Prior: "Yes I am!  How are you?  Thanks for coming!"
PB: "Is Mark ever going to play again?"
MP: (stern, voiced raised) "IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I CAN DO FOR YOU?  IF NOT, THANKS FOR STOPPING."

Pimple Boy's face turned beet red, he turned around, and we never saw him again.  Not every BCBer might be a Prior fan, but I do appreciate and find it pretty damn cool when the player's wives stick up for their husbands and put stupid-assed fans in their places.

While it's hard to defend the kid...
...especially when considering his wardrobe, the question was a valid one.

I have one too....
I asked him for an autograph and he said no.

Eyre, Howry, Blanco, Williamson, Dempster, Murton, Mabry, Hairston, Pierre, Barrett, and even Arroyo were nice enough to that day though.  Hell, Pierre and Barrett even let me take a pic with them.

There are always some
real freak-toids at spring training.  Some need restraining orders placed on them.  My family and I were down in Fort Myers last spring and popped in to see a little bit of the Minnesota Twins camp.  There was a couple in their 40's and another group of 20-something guys that the FBI would classify as stalkers.  But good for a laugh.

by BlueMike on Oct 20, 2006 8:59 AM CDT up reply actions

Actually
I say good for the kid. Why couldn't his wife simply say "sure he is!" and then ask if there was something she could do for him? It would be different if I walked up and did that, but a kid all fixed up like that? Come on....

At first I misread the post
And thought it was literally kid, i.e. small child, and had the same reaction as you.  But this was just some socially retarded idiot in his 20s - don't feel too bad.

Congrats
But for the love of God, lets please hope Mrs. Prior lifts the baby out of the bassinet so Mr. Prior doesn't rip a shoulder muscle crouching down.

I seriously (huh?) find that funny...
With all the stupid injuries out there in baseball land, I don't see that as a stretch at all, especially if he is still rehabbing.

I found it funny too..
... especially since Shawon Dunston suffered a back injury once while lifting one of his kids out of a car seat.

physical harm
on another human being is funny, yet us having a good time about Lou Piniella talking about midgets isn't....Lost in translation somewhere.

He was hoping Mrs. Prior lifted the baby up so Mark WOULDN'T hurt himself.

I actually found it funny.

I'm honestly surprised...
That he didn't pull something in the process of the procreation.  Stranger things have happened when it comes to Cubs injuries(sneeze-induced back spasms, computer keyboard-induced back trouble, etc.).

Please no more
I am sorry (not really) but I do NOT see the point in wishing congrats to a ballpalyer or any celeb or psuedo-celeb that has just had a baby.  Call me a synic but why should we give a rat's you know what about some millionaire couple having a baby?  If the child were born with a disorder or if there were complications than by all means send your thoughts and prayers BUT not just b/c they brought a child with a silver spoon in the mouth (and likely a dysfunctional right arm) into the world. GEESH people. WTF?

I don't know
the feeling, but I'm sure it's a most jouyous one (anyone please back me on this) to look into your baby girl's eyes for the first time, I'm happy for him, for as much as the man has been suffering (I know he makes a vast amount of money, but $$ does not equal happiness) I'm happy for him and his wife.

Congratulations
You've just won the Montgomery Burns annual curmudgeon of the year award.  Previous winners include Oscar the Grouch, Ebeneezer Scrooge, and Dick Cheney.

And by the way, you extend congratulations to ANYONE who has just had a child because it is (or should be) a wonderful and joyous occurrence in their life.

I'll call you a synic
And then I'll tell you that it's spelled "cynic."

Only a true Cub fan
would call what is really the post-season the off-season.  I guess post-season and off-season mean one and the same when you are addicted to the Cubs.  :)

Congrats to Mark and his wife.  Maybe this little addition to the family will help him get some perspective on things and focus on what's important, getting himself in shape to pitch baseball games.  I would guess that there is nothing like the welfare of your child to set your mind straight.

I dedicated yesterday's column I wrote
(finished today b/c I was sick yesterday) is about Prior and the CUBS needing to move on.
