Most boring world series ever.

Oh, no it's not.
Here, right off the top of my head, are several that were more boring:

2000, 1999, 1998, 1990, 1989, 1988.

That was about five seconds of thought. I could think of others.

This one's not over yet. Maybe it'll get better.

1988
Overall, the 1988 World Series may not have been the most exciting, but Game 1 of the series is one of the more memorable World Series games of my lifetime, at least.  Even before the Gibson home run, it was a close, exciting game, and there is a reason they still run it on ESPN Classic quite a bit.  After that, though, it was boring.

maybe
but it's only been 3 games so far. who knows? maybe it'll end up being one of the best. I'm rooting hard for a game 7 with a balmy 49 degree night in Detroit, whenever that might be.

What's the record...
...for most games rained out during a World Series?

by SiValleyCubFan on Oct 26, 2006 5:20 PM CDT reply actions

In...
... 1975, the famous game 6 was rained out three days in a row.

There were also three straight rainouts in San Francisco in 1962, as well as the 10-day postponement in 1989 for the earthquake.

I know it wasn't due to weather, Al,
But when did the 2001 Series end?  Wasn't it sometime in November?

Yes.
As most of you remember, the 2001 season was interrupted for a week due to the 9/11 attacks.

This resulted in the latest-ever regular season games at many parks, including Wrigley Field (Oct. 7), and the 7-game World Series ended on November 4.

2001
Although 1986 and 1991 were great, 2001 was the greatest World Series of my lifetime.  No question.  Maybe of all time.

I'd rank...
... 1986 above 2001, because of the way in which game six ended.

1975 trumps both of them.

by Al Yellon on Oct 26, 2006 7:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Ranking
I think I'd rank 2001 over '86, partially because Game 7 was much closer and more exciting in 2001 and partially because I'm the designated Yankee hater.

I was rooting for Mark Grace....
but games 4 and 5 at Yankee Stadium when Tino Martinez and Scott Broscious hit the home runs in the bottom of the ninth were incredible.  I am no Yankee fan by any stretch, but what they did in that series, especially in the wake of 9/11, I had to admit that they were brilliant in defeat.  And the way Arizona snatched victory from the jaws of defeat by beating Mariano Rivera, and seeing Mark Grace be able to celebrate a world championship was amazing.  Best World Series I have ever seen.

There is no question...
... that the 2001 WS ranks right up there with the all-time best.

Having been around for '75 and '86, I'd rank both of those slightly higher.

I failed an exam in college because I stayed up late to watch game 6 in '75. Well worth it, too.

by Al Yellon on Oct 26, 2006 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions

'91
Where would you rank the '91 World Series?  I don't remember it too well, but I remember game 7 was pretty exciting.

that's when Derek Jeter
was given the name 'Mr November' for his game-ending HR in game 4.

It was so warm that year in NY, by the way, that people were eating at sidewalk cafes at night- in November. of course you could still smell the burning stench within a few miles of GZ.

I think what's lost in this series...
Is Leyland's pick of rotation. Does anyone know why he started a rookie? I think it's the dumbest, most-overlooked decision of the Series. I hear no one talking about it.

The Cardinals suck against lefties. Nate Robertson has been good.

Here's my rotation:
Game 1 - Robertson
Game 2 - Rogers
Game 3 - Bonderman
Game 4 - Verlander
Game 5 - Robertson
Game 6 - Rogers
Game 7 - Bonderman

The way it is now, his best pitcher will only start one game. And Nate Robertson STARTS game 7!!! Granted, the cards started a rookie and got a great performance, but it's about chances, right stat guys?

Anyway, he could have made his rotation and I still don't see the logic. I haven't read anything. Has anyone?

by tyger1147 on Oct 26, 2006 7:48 PM CDT reply actions

Umm....
this isn't just a rookie he started.  He started Justin Verlander, one of the top rookie pitchers this year with great stuff.

I know he put Rogers in the spot he is in because he wanted him to pitch at home or something. I haven't read anything about anyone else.

Anyway, the Tiger offense has been listening to Dusty.  They are hacking away and taking no pitches.  I was screaming at the amount of pitches Carpenter threw.  This may just be my imagination though since I haven't actually checked the pitches per AB(do they even have that for the WS?), but they are probably very low.

Cubbie Blue will always sPaRkLe in my eyes, but please stop losing. PLEASE!

by sparkles721 on Oct 26, 2006 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions

About Verlander...
True, he was one of the best of a rookie class.

But when you take into account the fact that the Cardinals STINK against lefties and Kenny Rogers dominance, Verlander is their fourth best pitcher-at best he's barely 3rd.

Bonderman, in general, is their best pitcher.

I just don't understand starting a rookie who is your fourth-best (or third) pitcher twice in the World Series compared with starting your best pitcher once.

Seems dumb to me. But what do I know?

I wondered about that too...
...however, consider that the Mets don't have anyone who throws remotely like Verlander.  None of their pitchers are power guys, so starting off the World Series with a flamethrower like Verlander, who was one of the Tigers best pitchers all year, doesn't seem like such a bad idea.
