Spring Training Trip?

In Julie's 2006 BCB Awards diary, some of us started to talk about stalking Matt Murton(or at least I think I was), and the conversation somehow led from visiting Orange Guy in Georgia to going to stare at his glowing hair in Arizona or in left field at Wrigley.  I think we can do both, but first up is spring training(Later on in the offseason, we can start talking about copying the wonderful Athletics Nation and having our own BCB Day).  I believe some people out there said they liked the idea of going down to Arizona to watch our Cubs play. I'm not sure how serious you people were, but I'm starting this diary to start talking about that.

Jessica and I have started thinking about it, and we have decided that the dates would be around the last weekend/week the Cubs are in Arizona. If a group of us wants to go maybe we could organize ourselves and make the trip together.  We could make it in Jessica's words "sort of a girls outing a la Where the Boys Are. However instead of chasing guys we will just watch the Cubs."  If you really want to chase guys, I don't think we will stop you.  If I go, I'm chasing Z. :)

So, who wants to go and get a nice tan while watching the Cubs? Do you have any ideas for the trip? Already have a planned spring training trip and want to brag about it?  Go ahead and post!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Well...
it originally started as a just girls thing, but if a guy wants to come I think we could make it a BCB thing.  I dunno. We seriously are just starting to think about it.

The week of Sunday March 25th is my spring break week, and I would love to spend it in Arizona watching the Cubs.  I wouldn't miss school. I like it way too much...

its
pretty cool of your Ps to let you go (orwould you be going with them?)

i went with my wife in 2004. we had a great time. its kind of an unforgetable trip. i can see why so many people go every year. if the cubs didn't make me so mad every off-season i might go again. :)

i recommend making your reservations early. we planned everything in january and things were already pretty full. Al was an amazingly knowledgable and gracious  resource for me when i went, i'm sure he'd do the same for you.

No time for Vegas
For me. I am squeezing out vacation days by taking
the redeye back if we do this.
My sister and her family will be there the same weekend
and Jazzman56 was VERY helpful when I did this in 05
( not the same without Maddux) which is good because
neither Sparkles nor I will have a car
Hotels are basically easy if you don't mind staying near
airport or downtown which is fine
Anyone who wants to join us or just  meet up
can e mail me directly
at jrosner at kino dot com

PS if Sparkles can chase Z than I can chase Murton
( even if he is getting married )

This is off-topic...
but maybe someone can give me suggestions(flyball?).

I'm going to Boston next weekend with my dad.  Anything we just must do there?

Thanks in advance.

But now back to spring training thoughts...

Yeah, no kidding.
See if you can get into Harvard, sparkles.  When I took my SATs I had the scores sent to 3 schools--University of Iowa (which I did attend), UNLV, and Harvard (which did not accept me).  I later applied to these 3 schools as well.  Figured if Harvard accepted someone with my grades then I'd take advantage of it.  Of course, once in college I found out you actually had to study if you even wanted to stay in school and then I began doing very well in school.

by Maddog on Oct 26, 2006 10:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not even going to try.
I know I have to study.  My dad taught me that when he bought me my first preschool workbook when I was 4.

i had my scores
(though we took ACT, not SAT) sent to three schools also. duke, harvard and the tiny liberal arts school in kenosha i ended up going to. i found out that getting in to those schools is only the first hurdle. offering financial aid is not the priority at duke and harvard that it is at some of the lesser name places.

but i'm a firm believer that its not where you go to school that's important, its what you do while there. but maybe if i had gone to harvard and was now the medical director of boston children's i might feel differently.

financial aid
I found that when I applied to schools not in the usual circle of Chicago people I got more financial aid,  in fact the most expensive school on my list would have been the least expensive for me

then I went to grad school and discovered a whole new level of debt

faneuil hall
Is that how you spell it?

It's not really that groundbreaking.  It's mostly just a huge series of restaurants but I thought it was really cool.  When I visited my friend up there it poured (and the Sox game we were going to got rained out) so we went to Faneuil hall.  The Clam Chowder is incredible.

yay Boston!
you'll love it, its really a great city, this is about the time of year I saw it for the first time and couldn't wait to move here

it depends on what you want to do.  There is the normal tourist stuff Faniuel Hall which was mentioned before, is right near the Old State House and has a huge fod court and lots of street performers etc, the New England Aquarium is pretty cool if thats your thing.

But the must do's
walk though the Commons and the Gardens, the Commons are baseball fields and the Frog Pond where in the winter there is ice skating , and the Gardens are just beautiful

at least 1 meal in the North End, I have my personal favorites, nobody I know has ever been disappointed at La Familigia Giorgio's, and the best gelato place in the city is on Hanover Street, across the street and on the corner fom Modern Bakery.  Both Modern and Mikes are amazing, and the canoli competition between the 2 is fierce, its taken very seriously.  You can now walk to the North End very easily from the Faniuel Hall/Haymarket area.  (By the way if Haymarket is up when you are in town walk through it, its the most insane farmer's markte you'll ever see, just don't touch any of the produce, they get  mad, I once saw 2 grown men in a screaming fight over strawberries, the seller ended upnot letting the guy buy any)

If its not too cold walk any part of the Freedom Trail, its a red line wither painted or bricked in to the street and goes o all sorts of crazy places

Shopping is on Newbury St, as is my school

Harvard Sq is fun, very hippie, I recomend Mr. Bartley's they just sit you wherever there are free seats so usually you are with other people, but my dad swears its in the top 5 burgers he's ever had (I get a vegetarian sandwich so I have no idea) but there never order a milkshake, its a frappe, (pronounced frap, like frat with a p) a chocolate milkshake will get you chocolate milk shaken up

ok, I could go on and on because there are about a thousand awesome things to do, but I've been typing for awhile, but feel free to email me umdgem at yahoo dot com

hope you enjoy the city, its really awesome

Restaurants
I used to go to Bartley's when I lived near Boston.  It does have some of the greatest burgers ever.  Just be warned, when I used to go there (10 years ago), it's a bit of a dive-like atmosphere and they don't even have a bathroom on the premise.  On the other hand, the food more than makes up for it.  It's just outside of Harvard Square.

I was always a big fan of Legal Seafood, though it's become a bit of chain though.  Their seafood chowder is fantastic.  Definitely go somewhere for seafood.  Boston is the right city for that (which is mostly all that I miss about living near Boston--that and a few friends who still live around there).

Of course, there is "Cheers."
It's touristy-tacky ... but it's the exact front you saw on the show, if you have ever seen an episode.

But Boston is the bomb.  I have loved going there over the years.  And ya gotta eat the clam chowdah; it's wicked good.

Boston
I didn't care for Boston when I lived near there, but I've enjoyed visiting a lot more since I moved away.  Not quite sure why that is.  Maybe it's just best to be enjoyed in small doses.

College Town
Boston has a great reputation as a college town, so if you do go to school there, you'll probably enjoy it.  I did enjoy where I went to school, and would recommend it, but for some reason, I never really cared for Boston while I lived near there.  I always felt more comfortable in Chicago.  Which probably explains why I've lived here ten years.

by secdelahc on Oct 27, 2006 12:47 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

This does sound like fun!
And there are some things I need to get in Scottsdale (like a house, ha).  I'm well-old enough to provide "adult supervision" if Sparkles' family needs some to allow her to travel--though I still enjoy having fun.

My problem is that I have to go to Western writers' convention next year and a Custer-related event ... so if I do do ST, it'll only be for like two days.  And it's not easy or cheap to get out of this stupid town.  I HATE ARKANSAS ... besides, there are too many Deadbirds' fans.  And of the Hogs, but that's a different story ...

So pick a date--was it March 25th?  And I'll see just how far the credit card can get me.

Should start on the 24th actually
at least that is when I will get there if this happens
Fly out night of 23rd so should get the 4 games
It is the airfare you have to lockdown. Hotel & tickets
can be gotten. MUCH cheaper to stay out near airport
or downtown unless  we do camp out at someones
relative or something but you can get a perfectly good
hotel for $100 or less so $50 per night sharing is not
that bad.

Question
"I will pretty pissed if Murton and/or Gallagher are not there to  drool over."

Why wouldn't they be there?  You're not buying into this "Murton will be traded" nonsense are you?   What possible rationale could there be for trading a young player making the league minimum, and who had a darn good year in most respects?  Makes no sense to me.

by jazzman56 on Oct 27, 2006 12:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You just never know
They are pretty desperate for a power hitter and
MLB ready starter so I can see them using them in
a package. The Cubs have VERY little to trade.
I don't think it will happen and short of say Willis
WITH a contract extension I would not do it.

Making trades like that
is a treadmill to oblivion.  Sheesh, if this year taught us nothing else, it is the value of keeping and nurturing your good young players.

Tigers, A's, Marlins, etc, etc.

Sure, mixing in some established veterans is a good thing.  But, don't mortgage the future by dumping good, young (and cheap!) players.

I don't have problem trading for Willis
Murton OR Gallagher plus Marshall or Mateo etc
I have no problem. Willis is washed up vet of I think
25. The one effective thing Hendry has done is trade
young guys with teams who can't afford THEIR young
guys. I don't trade for Willis without an extension and
I don't see the Cubs being the one putting up the best
package for him ( FYI all of this would apply to a trade
for Cabrerra too of course) but if they COULD ,yes
I would let my beloved "Orange Guy" go
but NOT in some stupid package for A-ROD fyi

Willis made what...
$4.5M last year?  And will no doubt get a raise?  It's gonna take a lot of $385K guys to come up to that.  I don't do it unless Florida is willing to take some guys that they value a lot more than I do.

Info
I checked with a friend who works for the D-Backs and she sent me some preliminary schedule information for the Cactus League.  Keep in mind that not all games are set and this is subject to change, but at this point it looks like this for the days you mentioned:

Friday, March 23rd
Giants-Cubs @ Hohokam

Saturday, March 24th
Cubs-Giants @ Scottsdale

Sunday, March 25th
Angels-Cubs @ Hohokam

Monday, March 26th
Cubs-Angels @ Diablo (Tempe)

Why can't they go to Florida?
Because they have been training in Arizona since the 1950's, and there are far more former Chicagoans there than in Florida. It's a tradition, they have a virtually new complex (less than ten years old), and Arizona is very aggressive about recruiting teams to go there, and then stay there.

I would not be at all surprised to see two to four MORE teams move to AZ for spring training in the next few years.

by Al on Oct 27, 2006 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

True.
I guess the better question would've been why can't other teams I like come to Arizona?  Hopefully, they will.

The preliminary
schedule I got only has about 9 Cubs games listed, and they usually play around 30.  There is no game listed for Tuesday the 27th, so maybe they will play Oakland on that day.

There is nothing listed for the Cubs after the 26th.  I would assume they would plug in a couple of games in Vegas towards the end of the week.  I'll post any updates I get, but they don't usually have a final schedule until around the 1st of the year.

In 2003...
... at my old blog, I wrote up Al's Arizona Spring Training Travel Guide.

Though it's three years old, it's got all the current Phoenix-area parks reviewed, and I believe all the info is still pretty much current, except for Tempe Diablo, which has been redone and is MUCH nicer than it was in 2003, and Phoenix Muni, which has also had some improvements since then.

LOL!!!
Well, there are beaches and there are beaches.

Since you are an ex Zonie maybe you will relate to this.  When I was a kid growing up in Scottsdale, they built the first large scale artificial wave machine and put it is a water park in Tempe called Big Surf.  I had some friends who actually bought Surf boards with the intention of learning how to surf!

But, the standard response for us desert dwellers when visitors bemoan the lack of a beach is:  Whaddya mean? It's ALL beach...there's just no ocean.

by jazzman56 on Oct 27, 2006 5:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

God, I remember Big Surf.
I may even recall when it opened!  Never went there--though while I went to Az State, I visited the Malibu Grand Prix right next to it.  It was off Hayden, wasn't it?

Not quite Minder Binders, but it was good for an hour's worth of fun.

Scottsdale Stadium
got a significant revamp/upgrade since last Spring Training.  I think there were several good posts and links posted here last spring about things to do and see in the Valley while here for ST.  A BCB search should turn them up, no?

That's likely true.
The Cubs' ST schedule last year didn't have them at Scottsdale while I was there, so I haven't been there in two years. I look forward to going back next spring.

The biggest change
from a fan standpoint will be parking areas, new berm and terraced seating, a new team shop and a new 2900 square foot ramada in the outfield for parties and special events.

Most of the other renovations and additions are things like practice fields, new clubhouses, bullpens, etc.

If you
are a western writer, have you ever been to the Zane Grey museum / cabin up on the Mogollan Rim?

When was the last time you were in Arizona?  Do you know Bob Boze Bell?

by jazzman56 on Oct 27, 2006 6:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You know, I haven't.
I wasn't particularly interested in Westerns when I lived in Scottsdale/Tempe.  I'm still not really a Western writer--it's just one of my main characters is a bit of an Old West legend.  I tend to write literary fiction and my current story happens before the Seventh Cavalry's existence.

However, one of my best friends write an article for Bell about his trip to the Grey cabin.  It was in the March edition of "True West" magazine.

Hokahey!

BTW ...
I was last in AZ in early 2004.  Took Spouse to the Rez and that was about all the time we had.

Navajo.
Both my grandpa and great-grandpa were Tribal Council Chairmen.  Way back when.  The position has since been replaced with that of a President (Joe Shirley).

I'm only a quarter Indian (Navajo-Jemez-Tewa), but my family really tried to keep me connected to the heritage.

Wow
very interesting.

One thing that has changed since you lived here is that when someone says they are going to the Rez, they generally mean to go to a casino.

Fortunately, the Navajos haven't done that...yet.
