Bochy to manage Giants

Apparently the Giants have decided to hire Bruce Bochy: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2640133

Unless he's a candidate elsewhere, I guess that means BB is back in the Cubs' broadcast booth.

I think it is interesting that the Giants are going with Bochy.  How often do you see managers change teams within the division?  Also makes me wonder who the Padres will hire.  And no, I don't think it will be Baker.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Curious...
Is that a hunch or have you read something to support that?

I could really see Baker running that team into the ground.

I hate David Eckstein.

Probably
Bud Black.  He even lives in North San Diego County now.

I've heard Dusty's name mentioned, but with Sandy Alderson and Paul DePodesta seemingly running the show in San Diego, I can't believe they'd go with a guy like Dusty.  Unless they truly think a manager makes no difference on the field and he'd just be there to sell tickets and give weird answers to the media.

I bet DePodesta is kicking himself now that Terry Collins just took the Orix Blue Wave job. :-)

And if...
... a front office believes that a manager makes no difference, there is little chance, that front office would spend the $4M per season on a manager, likely what Dusty will require. He may be willing to take a pay-cut of a few hundred thousand dollars, but if you don't value a manager, you don't pay one big dollars (and $4M is big dollars for a manager in MLB).

Josh, any rumblings that Brenly
may interview with San Diego?

I have heard nothing...
... about this, but I'll bet Brenly will throw his hat in the ring for the SD job. He might actually be a good fit there.

by Al Yellon on Oct 27, 2006 8:33 AM CDT up reply actions

I've heard
nothing about Bob Brenly interviewing in San Diego either.  Which is probably fitting, because I've never been able to tell the difference between Bob Brenly and Bruce Bochy.

Alderson:  Didn't we just let this guy go to San Francisco?

DePodesta:  Nope, that was the other mustached catcher from the 1980s for a team in a city starting with "San" who led a team from the NL West to the World Series as a manager and who's initials are BB and whose last name ends in y.

Save the cheerleader. Save the Cubs.

Considering
that Bochy hasn't even been announced in SF yet, it is a tad early for the Padres to have their interview list set.  The reaction is San Diego this morning seems to one of mild durprise, although I can't imagine why.  When they didn't extend Bochy it pretty much greases the skids for him to leave.

Bud Black and Ron Wotus, bench coach of the Giants, seem to be the two most likely to interview, but I'm sure Alderson has others in mind.

The "braintrust"
of Alderson and DePodesta will probably go the route of installing a Univac computer in the seat Bruce Bochy formally had in the dugout.  God, how I dislike those two.  And Theo Epstein and JP Riccardi.

by BlueMike on Oct 27, 2006 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions

A Univac?
I didn;t realize you were that old, Mike.  How many years has it been since there has been a Univac computer on the market...or even a company named Sperry...who made them?  I'm guessing 25 years, at least.

I can't stand Sandy Alderson and Paul DePodesta
I hope they crash and burn in San Diego.  Kevin Towers and Bruce Bochy have done an excellent job in San Diego with limited resources.  But the sabermetrician geeks are riding to the rescue and apparently intent to get rid of anybody who can't recite pages 45-2,697 of the latest Bill James manual.  Bullcrap.  DePodesta was a train wreck with the Dodgers.  All he did was cut ridiculously big checks (e.g., JD Drew).

Screw Alderson, screw DePodesta.  Go Giants and Bochy.

by BlueMike on Oct 27, 2006 9:09 AM CDT up reply actions

DePodesta did a good job in L.A.
it's just that the miserable rate Lasorda worked behind the scenes to get rid of him.  The Bradley card was played to the max. with the owner.

Alderson did a great job with the As.

Towers should have no problem getting another job.

by DudeVf1 on Oct 27, 2006 10:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Sorry, No Way
DePodesta was indeed a train wreck in L.A. They made the playoffs in spite of him in 2004. Dan Evans put together that team, and at the deadline, DePodesta tore it apart by trading Lo Duca and Mota. With DePodesta's guys in 2005, they lost over 90 games. Lasorda did indeed lobby McCourt, and he absolutely did the right thing.

The Padres..
are making a mistake by letting Bochy go. Their going to have to spend a lot more money just to be as good as they have been. And a WHOLE LOT more money to be better.

Baker will not manage again. He is apparently
not even being interviewed.  He has been exposed for what he is, a poor manager and leader.  It would not surprise my at all if he never manages (is offered to manage) again.

by gravedigger on Oct 27, 2006 8:41 AM CDT up reply actions

Disagree
Dusty will likely serve a forced retirement for a season or two.  But if he does want to get back into managing, I believe he will have little problem in doing so.  His resume speaks for itself.  And he is greatly respected and admired by players.  A veteran team that needs a "soft touch" to get over the hump (ala the role Joe Torre played in New York in 1996) will be great fit for Dusty.  It is inevitable that Mike Hargrove will be fired in Seattle.  And I also think Mike Scioscia will soon be on thin ice with Anaheim.  Dusty's name will invariably zoom to the top of the list as logical candidate.  And he might even be in line to manage the Yankees when Torre hangs it up.

people
have a short memory, and dsuty is a big name. he'll probably get another job and be hated by the fans there after a year or two for his horrible managing.

Dusty to New York?
That is crazy, he couldn't handle relations with the Chicago media, the New York media would shred him. And he'd never manage the Padres, they don't even want to pay Bochy, Dusty just came off 4 million a year, he won't cut his salary more than 50 percent to go to San Diego. Unless, he is in terrible financial shape.
