could nomar play 3rd?

Let's analyze this.  Critics will say he's too injury prone or lacks the "pop" that aramis brings to the table.

Star-divide

What he would bring to the table is a salary that's roughly 1/3 to 1/2 what Aramis will probably command.  Also, when considering the injuries he sustained this year, he still put up over 500 plate appearances.  Assuming the Cubs can get him for $6M  / year for 2 years, we would have that much more money to dump into better starting pitchers and a top-notch centerfielder.
Also, this guy has put up better offensive numbers than aramis throughout their respective careers.
Nomar - .367obp,  .540slg
Aramis - .332obp, .493slg
Even when considering how much Aramis has improved in his career, Nomar has still shown an ability to get on base at a higher rate this year (.367 vs .352).  Although Nomar would likely be batting #2 instead of clean-up, he's shown he hasn't lost much power either this year, posting a slg % of .505(compared to A-Ram's .561).

When considering that A-Ram could make betwen $14-$17M/year, I think I'd rather have Nomar and a better starting pitching staff.

I wish we had a rover position available
b/c I'd love to see him back on the North Side....the problem is that we don't have a position for him....I don't trust him on the left side of the infield or in the OF.  Which brings up an interesting, albeit a complete stretch of a question.  How about second base??

by LuisSalazar on Oct 28, 2006 7:19 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

hey, i wouldn't mind
seeing him at 2nd or shortstop AS LONG AS we trade Izturis and start THE-RIOT.
Hendry needs to be creative so we can see this guy back in cubbie blue pinstripes!
So we're stuck in a slump, it's only been a century...

2B...
... isn't out of the question, I suppose. They SHOULD have signed him to be a "rover" -- a la Tony Phillips, LAST year.

Oh, well. Mistakes CAN be rectified.

2B...
I love this guy at 2nd base. He'll take a couple of years on a deal, play 120 plus games, give some opportunities for Theriot to play, and be cleaned out by the time Patterson is major league ready. Love it. Love it. Love it.

Would you....
rather have Normar or a player like Durham at 2nd?

I am still afraid of Nomar's history of injuries.

he hath no fury like a cubs fan scorned

Between the two??
Nomar. I think he fits better into what the Cubs are likely to try to do over the next few years. And I suspect that you'll see a more affordable contract for him. Both had monster years, but I suspect that Durham will be able to capitalize on it better. Fair or not, I think people still see Nomar as damaged goods.

Has anyone heard of any interest
at all Nomar or the Cubs part to having him back?  He's one name that has never seemed to come up.

by LuisSalazar on Oct 28, 2006 10:45 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not as yet...
one way or the other. I think we're just at the point now where players and teams know each others intentions. Whether extensions get done, options exercised, etc. I'd look for trial balloons to go up from a lot places around baseball over the next 7 days. And to whoever mentioned it before, I can see him playing 2nd in Anaheim all day long too. You could probably get another 5-10 games as season from him DHing.

by Damen Jackson on Oct 28, 2006 10:51 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes
Go get him. I don't care where we put him. We never should have let him go in the first place.

Nomar
I think he'll end up with the dodgers again. He may just be testing his value, somewhat similar to Aramis, but if LA truly doesn't want him, and Aramis bolts, I'd rather try him at third than scott moore, if he agrees to another incentive-heavy deal like he did this year. he's scary though. He's like a Ferrari though- one big collision and he'd explode into a million pieces. I doubt it will happen. He'll likely end up with the other LA team than the cubs.

by cashcowsquirtingsourmilk on Oct 28, 2006 7:43 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That would make sense...
... if Aramis stays, and I believe he will -- Nomar could absolutely wind up with the Angels.

by Al on Oct 28, 2006 8:28 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nomar has filed for free agency
Link.

I too was upset that the Cubs didn't bring him back.  I'll take his .303/.367/.505/.292 EqA line over 122 games.

I was not happy either
but that's Jim Hendry for ya. If I was Jimbo, I would have given Nomar the same or better contract to play second base for the cubs and traded todd walker. I know how people love walker, but he doesn't compare to Nomar. I still think Nomar was so fragile that 2nd would have been an even dangerous proposition, but insurance is necessary. Going in, I thought Aramis would be the most likely to go down. turns out it was D-Lee. I know it was freak, but what would have been with Nomar at first? you gotta have depth. I think depth is not in this org's vocabulary. That said, I think Hendry is TOO NICE. Seems like he goes out of his way to make players like this be happy somewhere else. there comes a time where you should LIE once in a while OK? sounds terrible I know. but nomar was looking to START somewhere, especially in LA, but if promised a starting spot with the cubs he might have taken it. Hendry didn't need to make good on the promise. that's business. hendry is too nice, again. does nobody else think that? i know incompetence always comes to mind, but business is business, and hendry is not good for business. although, Nomar, like Maddux probably wanted to move to LA anyway. Lots of facets to consider.

by cashcowsquirtingsourmilk on Oct 28, 2006 9:09 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree...
but it's never going to happen. Hendry won't bring him back for a second time. I love to bring him back and start at second, and then you've got Theriot to give him the many days off he requires. He'll probably be fairly affordable too.

by Macy on Oct 28, 2006 11:27 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Just as an aside..
On what basis do you see Aubrey Huff getting an 11 million per deal? It's easily 40% more than the highest contract that I was envisioning for him.

by Damen Jackson on Oct 28, 2006 9:38 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

good question...
"On what basis do you see Aubrey Huff getting an 11 million per deal?"  Personally, I would never pay Aubrey Huff $11M per year.  However, Baseball Prospectus seems to think he's worth that much.  I had a feeling someone would ask this question, so here you go...

by Old Style Heavy on Oct 28, 2006 10:11 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Their logic is so flawed...
that I don't know where to begin. Well yeah, actually I do. First, it presumes that Huff continues to play 3rd base. He is versatile, however I understand he's average at best defensively. I've seen him play a few times, and see him better suited for first base or left field. And I suspect baseball people agree based on his utilization in Tampa Bay. Secondly, I don't see a contending team tolerating the defense. Mind you, these are the teams most likely to make an 11 million per move. And it's difficult to fathom a mid-market shelling out the cash for a mid-level talent. Personally, I had anticipated something in the vein of 3/24 coming out of that camp. Anyone have some thoughts on this?

by Damen Jackson on Oct 28, 2006 10:25 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Huff
That's $11 million over the next three full seasons.  He'll make more than that I think but that's where BP values him.

Nomar makes sense...
Last year I envisioned him and Soriano (via trade) on the Cubs and couldn't get over it. Then it didn't happen. Then when Lee got hurt, thinking of Nomar and Soriano holding the fort down...

Anyway, promise him a second base spot. And if Ramirez doesn't sign, you've already got the closest thing you're going to get as a replacement (short of A-Rod). I mean, we're all talking about how there is NO replacement if A-Ram leaves, but I guess this would be a start, ya know?

But then, that'd be smart (and who knows how likely), and that's just something the Cubs haven't been doing lately. But we'll see... we got two weeks to bitch about possibilities. Then bitching about the actualities starts.

I prefer to imagine this scenario...
Not only do we sign Soriano, we get A-Rod, keep A-Ram, and start all 3 in the infield with Lee. Or, Soriano is so fond of the OF now, he goes out to left, and we pick up Nomar for 2nd. To complement Soriano in Left, we put Wells or Matthews Jr in Center, and Sammy Sosa returns from retirement in 2001 form to play right again. As long as we're picking up every free agent, we may as well use our time machine and get Sammy.

For pitchers, we get Gyro, Zito/Schmidt, and Prior reveals he's used the time machine to go to the future and get advanced medical treatment, restoring his arm to 2003 condition. Disdaining a 5 man rotation, we go with Gyro, Zito/Schmidt, Zambrano, and Prior, each of whom win 20-25 games, including the magical 23 strikeout perfect game thrown by Z, who has finally given up the Internet to preserve his elbow. The biggest surprise is when phenomenal closer Wood returns to the rotation in the playoffs to keep everybody fresh, all under the guidance of surprise Pitching Coach replacement Greg Maddox (turns out he worked out some sort of Prince and Pauper deal with Larry). The Cubs are so thrilled they manage to convince MLB to retroactively award Mad Dog a 15 win season last year.

Looking back next year, we'll all remember fondly the odd circumstances surrounding the base-running special advisor we brought in to motivate the guys during the offseason. No one would have expected it, but Pete Rose's signing baseballs with "I'm sorry I bet on baseball" stunt actually worked, and he was let back into baseball. Seizing upon the opportunity, the Cubs brought him into Spring Training where he turned the Cubs into Team Hustle. The most notable change came in the person of A-Ram, who overcame his nagging quad problem and became the best baserunner on the team...

In all seriousness, I really am enjoying my dreams of A-Ram, A-Rod, Soriano/Nomar, Lee in the infield. At least we know Lee will be there.
