Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Open Thread: 2006 Division Series, Day 2

I realized this morning that at least one of the gameday links I posted yesterday didn't work -- this was due to errors in typing the team abbreviations.

THESE ought to work.

Athletics at Twins, noon CT. TV: ESPN

Dodgers at Mets, 3 pm CT. TV: ESPN

Tigers at Yankees, 7 pm CT. TV: ESPN

Two games in New York today. Watch your step, the TV network drooling might cause a flood.

Dusty Baker has been hired by ESPN as a commentator -- at this writing I do not know which game he will be assigned to, but he wasn't at the A's/Twins game or the Cardinals/Padres game yesterday, so it'll likely be one of the NY games today.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

If we're lucky
maybe we'll get Dusty and Joe Morgan together in one booth. Just imagine all the complaining about how overrated OBP is.

None of which is to be confused with Julie's "There's a sale on grapefruit" dance.

Triumvirate
If we get Tim McCarver in the booth, we can get the triumvirate of former players who for some reason don't understand how runs are scored.

And who are also really crappy announcers.

Dusty needs a job managing...
and right now his stock is at an all-time low.  If he starts ripping the Cubs and their fans it may turn-off GMs and owners...

I think Burnitz said it best a while ago when asked about whether Dusty was getting treated unfairly.  he basicall responded by saying when you don't win, you get fired, that's part of the gig, but they get paid extremely well so they all come out okay....Dusty has to put on this type of attitude while he stumps for his next job on ESPN...so he won't be rippin' nuthin'

by DudeVf1 on Oct 4, 2006 11:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Dusty
Dusty will get another managerial gig within the next year or two.  Assuming of course he wants one.  Dusty has made a lot of money already and has a 7 year old son at home.  He may elect to take the easy gig  of doing color commentary on ESPN, Fox, etc.  If Seattle falters next season, you can bet Dusty's name will zoom to the top of successors for Mike Hargrove.  And I wouldn't be totally surprised to see Dusty one day wind up back with the Dodgers.  Things could turn nasty for Grady Little real quick in the next year or so.

Not if he keeps making dipstick moves...

by theprognosticator on Oct 5, 2006 7:06 PM CDT up reply actions

I think L.A. is his next job, too.
If Grady Little manages poorly in the playoffs and it costs the Dodgers.  I had read in the paper months ago that Dusty was close to the current Arizona owner, was he Dusty's former agent?

Dusty's made a ton of money with the Cubs but I have no idea whether he wants or needs more, does he still have problems with the IRS?

But I also think the guy wants to manage again, just in the right non-critical environment.

But I think his failures in Chicago made it much harder for him to be a viable candidate for all but a couple of teams.  He doesn't need to manage but if he wants to he has less opportunity, but the Dodgers hired Little so there's hope.

by DudeVf1 on Oct 5, 2006 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions

The Mets
Why are prognosticators bullish on the Mets when their starting pitching is reduced down to a 40 year old Tom Glavine who had a bad second half, a 40 something El Duque who was diagnosed with a groin tug the other day and a 36 year old Steve Tracshel (yep, THAT Steve Tracshel).  Not to mention a paper thin bullpen after Billy Wagner.

I see the Dodgers smoking through the Mets.  And I also see the Mets first in line to acquire Barry Zito and Matsuzaka during the offseason.

by BlueBooHoo on Oct 4, 2006 11:05 AM CDT reply actions

It's even worse
They don't have El Duque at all.  He's out with a torn calf muscle.  Which sounds painful.

ESPN Exec: "You're right. We need to find someone even LESS articulate than McCarver. You know, someone who can talk for a good five minutes without ever making a point or contributing to the flow of the game at all."

ESPN Exec looks at the tv and catches the crawl that Baker isn't retained.

ESPN Exec: "Call Dusty and see if he can be in New York by Wednesday. Tell him he can bring his son in the booth with him as long as repeats that thing he said at the press conference about how he hopes players learned from what they understood and from what they didn't understand."

Nope,

that would be one Pete Rose with 4,256 hits.

by JFCubFan on Oct 4, 2006 12:37 PM CDT up reply actions

What I mean
by "hitter" is someone who is contributing to the offense's sole aim, namely, scoring runs.

What I do NOT mean when I say "hitter" is someone who amasses hits.  This is not to say, of course, that Rose wasn't a fantastic hitter.  He was.

by Jhoratio on Oct 4, 2006 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Pete Rose
Had a good prime, but he was never a great hitter.  He was a very good hitter who stuck around forever and once player/manager, hurt the team by playing himself instead of better, younger players.  All so he could break the hits record.

by VS on Oct 4, 2006 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

really?
I'm pretty sure Bonds between 2000 and 2005 was the best hitter ever and those are likely the best 6 years of baseball we will see in our lifetimes and our grandparents would ever have seen.  Bonds in his prime was a far better hitter than Rose.

For example, who is a better Running Back?  Barry Sanders or Emmitt Smith.  A lot of people, myself included, would say Sanders with little regret even though he has less TD's and yards.  Numbers are just that, numbers.  Rose's hit record indicates that he accumulated a lot of hits and while it shows that he is a great hitter, does not make him the best

That being said, they are important and Bonds numbers from his best seasons far eclipse anything Rose could ever have hoped to put up.

maybe
You know...we could put him at 2nd.

We have Lee at 1st and hopefully ARam at 3rd.  Nomar wouldn't have the range/defense to play SS but he could probably play a passable 2B and then we would have Theriot to spell him and play if he gets injured.

Hey, Santos Sorrow, I don't have the time to look up stats right now and I frankly don't know...would that be a bad idea?

Nomar playing 2B?
is that your question?

If it is he certainly would produce in the first quartile of the League's second baseman, but he almost certainly couldn't play the position.  Nomar's odd side-arm delivery would make pivoting at second VERY difficult, I wouldn't have much confidence of him making it more than a few months injury-free.  However, if you are talking about third base to replace Aramis when he leaves, that's a different story. but nomar at third would require adding a Soriano to play second, or your looking at another 90-95 loss season - you simply wouldn't have the requisite pop in the lineup.

that was my question
I didn't know if you thought he would be able to make the transition or not.

New Gameday
I'm trying to get some work done so I am following the game on Gameday.  Has anyone else seen the new Enhanced Gameday? It looks pretty sweet. You can see the pitch speeds and locations alot better because there is a different view. Hopefully, MLB won't charge for the new gameday, because I am really excited about it (yeah-I'm kinda lame) especially living out of Chicago and not being able to watch all the Cubs games on TV.

Gameday
I did like being able to see the pitches and path, but overall, I didn't care for it as much.  Partially because I found it hard to see the box score and the recent plays.  Partially because I'm resistant to change.

Oakland
I predicted the A's would beat the
Twins in the first round and they're up
2-0.
Can they finish the deal at home or will
they go bellyup like 2000-2003 ?
We shall see.....
