Piniella to Yankees?

Anyone else out there have the feeling that if the Yankees lose this game that they're blowing right now, Steinbrenner will buy out the rest of Torre's contract and hire Lou Pinella??  There's no way the Big Boss isn't going to blow this Yankees team up after their choking.....

That's my prediction, at least.  Pinella to the Yankees--Girardi to the Cubs.  This would be good news for those of us rooting for Girardi as the next manager of the Cubs.

Thoughts?

I'd rather have
Francona.

Agreed...
...I really think Torre is a good guy, but we're not the Yankees--and that's his track record.

Who's to say
It won't be Girardi to the Yanks, Pinella to the Cubs?  Ugh

yeah...
...i thought of that scenario--kind of scary.

I'll say it
Girardi is not going to be the manager of the Yankees for many good reasonings.
The hype on girardi is totally laughable.

by cubswin on Oct 7, 2006 6:09 PM CDT up reply actions

There's a chance
that happens.  I think Torre would really have to initiate it, though.  He's as close to unfire-able as they get in NY.  The media would eat Steinbrenner alive if he scapegoated Torre.

Agreed...unless,
Steinbrenner blows up the team and sends them all packing.

Agreed.
Torre has a year left on his contract, as they mentioned on the telecast, at $7 million. Unless he WANTS to quit, he's not going anywhere.

And if he does -- I imagine Lou will be knocking on the door.

by Al Yellon on Oct 7, 2006 6:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Well...
... I'm a bit surprised, but I guess Steinbrenner is going on one of his rampages.

WHAT?
The media does not eat George Steinbrenner alive, George Steinbrenner eats the media.

Big Stein is as big as it gets in New York. If Torre gets fired, nobody will complain a whit.

Hey, I'd love to see Joe G in Chicago ..
.. but I'd much rather have Joe T. The differences are obvious and the man's a proven coach. I hope Hendry and Steinbrenner do lunch and get it done.

Naive hope of course. But I'd imagine a lot of talent out there in a few days might find themselves drawn to the North Side if Joe Torre took over the helm.

I doubt it will happen. But it would be a very GOOD offseason start.

Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

I hate to speculate on another man's health...
but does Torre look unwell to anyone else? Maybe just the grind of a long baseball season, but he looks completely wan. I think he hangs it up.

He looks old
but maybe that's just bc he is old.

Not happening
I just don't see Joe Torre coming to the Cubs.  He would be going from an organization that wins championships (not lately, but still better by far than here) to one that can't chew bubble gum and walk straight.  Plus Joe Girardi played for the Cardinals.  I just don't think he would want to come to the Cubs.  On the other hand if the Cardinals wanted to get rid of Tony then I could maybe see him going to St. Louis.
Is anyone else getting nervous that Hendry hasn't popped his head out of his butt yet and hire Girardi?  I know it hasn't gone on and on near as long, but for me this is worst than last off season when I was hoping Hendry would sign Furcal.  At least I don't think Girardi is going to go for the money grab if he is offered the job.
The dumbest people I know are those who know it all.

NY Daily News is reporting
that Torre's gone and Pinella will replace him.

I think the Cubs should get Torre.

GET SORIANO!

Can you post a link?
I couldn't find anything that said that specifically...

All I found was this:  http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2617224

It cites the Daily News, but it's not a sure-fire thing...

Just curious to get the exact tone of the piece before speculating on what could happen.

Forget about '07. Let's wait until 2008!

dang, you guys are on top
I thought at 2 a.m. I'd have the breaking news. But CFICA is correct, Pinella is off to the Yankees.

Heck, Torre would be a great nab. And I'm still a believer that A-Rod could use a change of scenery and would do some major damage in the NL

Poppppppppped it up...

i think
torre is more likely to go to the booth. he's already getting 7 million next year, he's old and looks tired.
