Manny on the trading block.....again

Apparently it would only take a couple of prospects and we could have him for 42 mill/3 years. That seems more than reasonable to me given the caliber of such a bat.
I personally have always loved Soriano but I do not want him on our team, and even less for a deal that would be paying him more than 15 mill when he's 38. C-Lee is out of the question in my book: too fat, too slow, too expensive.

Now the question is, and I ask this because I realize I would be, if given the chance, the worst GM possible (I'm a wuss when it comes to giving away prospects), what prospects would you guys be willing to deal? In my book, gallagher, veal, and pawelek are untouchable, but my guess is we would have to give at least one of them... So which one would you be willing to deal, and which other would you add to make the deal final?

Actually ..
Carlos Lee isn't slow. As a matter of fact, he stoled 19 bases last year. However he is too fat and expensive. I'd take him if he were 30-40 pounds lighter.

Ok..
I just assumed he was, with breasts like his, but it's not my point anyways... Veal, Gallagher, Pawelek, which would you trade?

I thought Manny
just had two years left on his deal.

2 years
I think is right, but he gets an extra million if traded

after 2 years of having to listen to the saga that is manny ramirez I'm not sure how I feel about him on our team, sure the bat would be great, but he's kinda a head case, and not always the best teammate.  (this season one of his required days off he was asked to play because Nixon got injured the day before and they were short an outfielder, he refused, and Manny's Hammy is cade for Manny doesn't want to play)

there's a reason one of the best hitters in baseball is always on the trade block, on a team that wants to win

Did we ever hear about him
asking to be traded during his 8 years in Cleveland? I think it's more a problem of him not liking Boston and the whole media scrutiny, but I could be wrong. Just seems he was doing just fine back in Cleveland.

by Chitown Mojo on Nov 16, 2006 10:45 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

its
not the asking to be traded that has me worried (I can't fault a guy for that) although I think he loves the attention when he wants it, and then gets angry when they focius on him when he doesn't

its the random days off he demands, and ducking into the Green Monster in the middle of an inning (missed a pitch, thankfully it was a strike), the mysterious injuries he gets.  if people get upset with the way Aramis plays Manny is way worse, although he's also a better talent,

I'm not saying that he isn't a great player, or that maybe he wouldn't be fantastic on the Cubs, but I worry about him because you can't hit if you don't play,  and the phrase Manny being Manny makes me cringe

I hear what you're saying...
All of it. But in the end the guy is an almost sure bet to play 150 games per, hit over 35 out of the park and most times than not drive in over 120 runs. And to me, Manny being Manny means Manny being an "idiot", not him being a Carl Everett a##hole type of player, and that in my opinion is not such a horrible thing. And if we're looking for clutch, well, we need look no further.

Manny
the only thing that would concern me is the much bigger left field at wrigley- about 45 feet difference down the line to be exact. all the rest is a non-issue. did he really miss a pitch when he ducked into the monster? I seriously doubt it. mysterious injuries? nonsense. I don't blame him for hating the rabid attention in that city. it's f'ing insane. it's like the beatles at the height of their fame all the damn time when he goes out.

I'd take the guy in a rapid heartbeat.

manny being mann
he, thought there was going to be a pitcing change, so ducked inside the wall

Manny being Manny

sorry, I mispoke, he was coming out of the wall when Miller was in his windup.  And he absolutely does o up and tell Francona "I'm not playing tomorrow"

He has had almost a free pass in Boston, even as bad as it is for sports reporting, (he claims he has no privacy, but gave a tour of his son's bedroom to the Globe) and although he's not in that jackass category I'm just saying you don't get his production free of charge, it comes with all his antics

SINATRO!!!! Its music to my ears.

i'm aware of his antics
having watched quite a few red sox games. a lot of it is exaggerated in the boston media. I still love the guy. the players adore him as well.

by cashcowsquirtingsourmilk on Nov 16, 2006 12:50 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

agree to disagree
I think its one of the few times the Boston media let him get away with stuff,  because its talked about, but mostly in a joking way

anyway I don't think he'll be traded, Theo is going to want something in return, and he's not trading him to any team in the AL East, or probably AL, plus I think Manny would veto almost any trade there is (he's a 5 and 10 player), citing a desire to win another world series, its just a bi-yearly rumor

w/o manny that's for sure

It depends on who......
Boston would take for him. My guess is that they would probably want Pie and Veal. I'd be willing to give them Pawelek.....but I'd rather hang on to Gallagher and Veal.

Buster Olney writes...
"We say three years and $42 million because in the end, Ramirez, who has a full no-trade clause in his contract, will probably want a year added to the end of his current deal to make this happen. And the Red Sox will probably eat some of his salary"

by Chitown Mojo on Nov 16, 2006 10:30 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

See that's what I thought...
Pawelek...hang on to Gallagher and Veal. Still hard to give that kid away if I was in charge though...

by Chitown Mojo on Nov 16, 2006 10:32 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Well......
I hate to say anything because it could go either way but I would bet at some point that out of the 3 Pawelek is one who's going to flame out. He doesn't pitch for half the season and then proceeds to play his 2nd year of rookie ball....for some reason I'm just not excited about his chances. Veal and Gallagher are reaching the level where they're going to be some big time prospects. I would try to hang on to them if I was Hendry.

While
I won't argue for trading for Manny as that's a bigger question.

However if Pawelek was needed to close a good deal for the Cubs I'd do it without a problem.  What has he done that makes him untouchable?  He's already been injured.  A 1.26 WHIP with a K/9 below 1.0 in low A ball doesn't scream untouchable to me.  The number of hot prospects that flame out for any organization is huge.  If a low minors pitcher with his history so far helps get a solid major leaguer, do it.

by rlpete on Nov 16, 2006 10:46 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Which is why I say
that I would make a terrible GM prospect-wise. I see Pedro written over all our young pitchers, just like I used to see Griffey Jr. written all over Pie.

Murton?
It would seem to me that Murton could be a significant piece of a trade that would bring in Manny.  Obviously it would take more than that.

not sure
they sent us Murton as a part of the Garciappara  deal and so don't think they'd be  wanting him back, jmho.

by DTJchris on Nov 16, 2006 1:10 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

For Manny
This would be one of the few deals where I'd be ok with moving Murton. However, I can only imagine what would take to get Ramirez: not only one of the best hitters of this generation, but of all time. His consistency and production are at the very elite level and he is a future first year hall of famer who is still producing at an insane level.

I don't think the Red Sox will move him unless they get elite talent in return. As the market is shaping up, his contract doesn't seem that big at all. He certainly has earned every penny of what he has made.

I think...
that it would not take as much as you think IF the Cubs would take on most of the salary.....

If the reports of a $120 mil. payroll are to be believed, I would do this deal in a NY minute.  Not only is Manny is great hitter, it would save Hendry from making a huge 6 or 7 year mistake on Soriano.

If this can happen, I say do it now....

they are going to want someone elite

Manny protects Ortiz, without him in the 4 spot Ortiz would never see a decent pitch
