Could Jimbo trade for Dontrelle Willis?

According to an article in today's South Florida Sun-Sentinel regarding the Astros reluctancy to trade Willy Taveras, Florida is interested in Pie.

"Early indications are the Marlins will have a hard time prying Willy Taveras away from the Astros... Meanwhile, Cubs GM Jim Hendry says the team is not dealing touted outfield prospect Felix Pie, another player on the Marlins' wish list."

I would package Sean Marshall and Felix Pie for Dontrelle Willis in a second.....wouldn't you?

In a word...
No. And really...no. Numerous reports have suggested that the Marlins spent all the the GM meetings telling teams they won't deal. Johnson or Olsen for Pie straight up is more likely.

If the CUBS sign Drew......or Soriano
OR pull off the unlikely miracle of trading for Vernon Wells.......Pie for Josh Johnson is a deal I look into heavily.......possibly give us back Renyel Pinto.....

Do you want to know...
if we would do if we were the Cubs GM (my understanding of the question)--or were you asking us if we think it would happen? Two different questions.

My answers are Yes--I would do it (as long as we get Drew or Soriano or Wells) and No--I don't think it will happpen.

Should have been clearer....
I guess both......Do you think there's a chance it would happen....and would you do it?

No
Florida said during the meetings in Naples that they don't intend to trade Dontrelle Willis.  I happen to believe them.

I don't
Willis is going to get a big spike in his salary and I think will be traded. Not to the Cubs though.

My guess is he ends up in Arizona.

Still
He's one of my favorite pitchers (and players) in baseball. I'd love to see him and Zambrano (and maybe Prior?) in the same rotation.

Would love Willis...
...but can't see it happening.

Pie and Marshall would make it a steal, IMHO.

Love to see him here, though.

Yup.
I don't think the Marlins will trade Willis or Cabrera; those could be two building blocks of their next title team.

by Al Yellon on Nov 17, 2006 2:31 PM CST up reply actions

those two
and Josh Johnson.  I think he's gonna be a great pitcher and if the Cubs could get him I'd be happy.

Pie and Marshall
for Willis would be great if we could pull it off but I think the Marlins would be holding out for more than that.  Like others I don't think they are going to trade him anyway.

Agreed
People forget that there are more than two teams in the league.  If Willis was on the market, there would be better offers that Marshall and Pie.

by rlpete on Nov 17, 2006 3:03 PM CST up reply actions

True
but are Lastings Milledge and Aaron Heilman really all that much better than Pie/Marshall?

I don't think that trade is around anymore
I think Milledge's stock has fallen a little since that was being floated.

by rlpete on Nov 17, 2006 4:22 PM CST up reply actions

No, it's very much alive.....
Milledge has fallen out of favor with Mets' management.......but his value hasn't decreased.

Dontrelle Willis isn't going to be moved
in my opinion.
