Star-divide

I had another idea about this.. Now the dodgers will have the exact 1-2 punch that hendry was going after last year kinda interesting

Wasn't
Nolasco's ERA nearly 5??  The Marlins play in a pitcher's park too right?
SORIANO! YESSSSSSSS! JIMBO!!!

I think when all is said and done...
...losing Nolasco and Pinto won't be any real loss.

That aside, we could have perhaps packaged them together for a better player.

Yeah Mitre...
Mister career 5-15, 6.01 ERA. It's Pinto, and Nolasco, who will IMO come around, that we will at some point regret having dealt.
GREAT SUCCESS!!!

by Chitown Mojo on Nov 20, 2006 5:13 PM CST reply actions

Mitre
will come out of the bullpen next year.  He did last year after being on the 60-day DL and showed good stuff most of the time.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's pretty good in relief next year.

Careful
with Nolasco, Of course I am bias, always liked the guy. Still if that is the number, 5 years 45 million, ouch. That is a lot of coin for an average fielder, and ok offensive player. Hey the guy busts his ass, but he is an ok player.

5/45?

And supposedly we effed up signing Soriano?

9MM for a player who could very well post sub .700 OPSs on a regular basis as early as next year.

And here I thought the Dodgers were taking a step forward dumping Izturis to us.

Well, they just got him back. Except minus the good defense. Oh and for 5MM more per year over the next 5.

This truly is a crazy market.

I'm really in the wrong field of work
I could stand there and get hit by pitches all day long and make at least $500k a year. My OBP would be 1.000!

Real ugly.

A lot of us (including myself) thought that Pierre would be one of the few who wouldn't cash in.  I thought he'd be lucky to get that 3/30 he was seeking.  Wow.

I would say this to Keith Law:
"Care to revise your bullshit statement?"

(which movie is this from?)

If you're gonna complain about a dumb contract, complain about Pierre's.

They managed to sign a guy long-term who was worse last year than Kenny Lofton.

Still works though as Keith Law's story was in fact, bullshit.

Where's the Mike-O-Meter?
By my completely unscientific tally, I have Mike and his grand prognosticating ability at 0-3.

ARam did, in fact, resign with the Cubs. Soriano signed. Pierre, who Mike repeatedly for weeks said was a virtual lock, is now a Dodger.

Anyone else keep track of his other predictions?

I would say I feel sorry for them, but then the doof who runs that site posted a "the cubs are dumb" diary after the Soriano signing which not only doesn't get our salaries right, he doesn't even have the correct players slotted in.

Errors
Tell me what I got wrong and I'll fix it. I know Bynum and Pie aren't going to make the team, I just couldn't figure out who to put in those slots.

by truebluela on Nov 20, 2006 6:25 PM CST up reply actions

It's probably premature to put anybody...
...in any slot right now as our team has yet to be completed, as is yours.

I wouldn't slot in LaRoche or Loney right now for you guys as I see the Dodgers in a position to land a number of other players via trade or free agency before it's over.

And anyhow, despite my earlier anger, I feel your pain on Juan Pierre. Hopefully he turns out well for you guys, and maybe he will (knowing Cub luck, he'll be 40-40 next year and Soriano will be lost for the year before the end of April).

And congrats on bringing back Nomar. In this nutty market, that 2 year deal could prove to be an excellent one.

Re
True, I probably should have just put an asterisk next to them or something. I was trying to capture where the Cubs stood finacially at this moment, and how they still needed to find guys to replace the Bynum's. I guess I failed there.

by truebluela on Nov 20, 2006 6:40 PM CST up reply actions

Even with Soriano...
...yes, we aren't a great team by any stretch right now.

With a healthy Derrek Lee and Soriano it is feasible that we could be a .500 sqaud with our current SP and roster as it stands now.

But concerning that, the Cubs have maintained that Soriano is just the beginning, SP is next, and for once, I believe them. And Piniella has been adamant about rebuilding the bench. I highly doubt Pie or Bynum will make the team, and if Pie does, it will be to start.

One change you could add: Ramirez will make only 8MM next year (he gets a 5MM signing bonus), and his total contract is only worth 14.6MM per.

if people
think we overpaid for soriano they sure did overpay for JP...good riddens

by tbizzle83 on Nov 20, 2006 8:01 PM CST up reply actions

Wow.
That's a really, really dumb signing. Five years? For a guy whose one and only real asset is his speed? That's usually the first thing to go.

The guy at True Blue LA is absolutely right. I'm just sorry we lost Pinto and Nolasco to the Marlins essentially for nothing.

by Al Yellon on Nov 20, 2006 6:14 PM CST reply actions

The high price of mediocrity
JP hustles, he out-tries everyone and he can shake up a shaky foe's pitching and defense...but he is NOT a superstar.

This reckless spending or raising of the bar year after year for not-great player is making me cringe...Pierre has more than doubled his salary in the last two years, for what??

Again, nothing against the guy and who among us wouldn't take the money. But what are the Dodgers and these other teams thinking? They're paying him as much as Nomar, a true superstar who draws in the fans/viewers. No one goes to a game to watch JP play, sorry.

I think baseball, which used to pride itself on being a bargain for family outings, is really going to kill the golden goose with this uncurbed spending spree on free-agents.
We, you the fans will ultimately be paying for these guys. Unless, like me, you choose to no longer attend any games in person, a choice I made by necessity in early '06 when began to feel a serious financial pinch.

You don't mind a Soriano or A-Road, true superstars, make the big bucks. But to pay this much for mediocrity, to make $10 M the going rate for a decent starting pitcher, is crazy, and will backfire badly on many of the "big spenders'' in a few years.

3-4 years max for a pitcher, let's hope, but expecting some crazy deals for starters soon.

When will they ever learn?

PINIELLA!

by theprognosticator on Nov 20, 2006 9:45 PM CST up reply actions

Prediction
Pierre will resume hitting .300+ and steal 60 bases.  The pitchers park will eat up his arm and his OBP will remain sub-.340.  The game of the week commentators will glow on about his batting average and everyone else who knows anything about baseball will understand that the Dodgers made a mistake and got shafted.

Seriously, more power to him.  I hope Juan gets everything he can in his next contract.  But when the Dodgers are paying him $9 million a year to kill their offense they'll think twice about who they pay what, and maybe the rest of baseball (including the Cubs) will too.  That type of contract to that type of player might eventually lead to a market correction for all of the extremely weak OPS players out there and maybe open some eyes of the old school guys who don't believe in these new-fangled statistics.

It's no wonder that so many young stats oriented guys are getting GM jobs.  There is a place in baseball for low OBP guys if for no other reason than there aren't enough high OBP guys to go around.  The problem is they shouldn't be making $9 million a year.  The Dodgers are going to learn an expensive lesson.

by pageian on Nov 20, 2006 9:17 PM CST reply actions

dont you think its a tad bit ironic
that the dodgers will end up with the cubs top 2 targets from last year.  i think it will make a good 1-2 punch.  i also think its way too much for pierre.  interesting stuff.

by VS on Nov 20, 2006 10:05 PM CST reply actions

So what happens to Lofton??
I was pissed when we let him go after 2003. I know that Hendry and co wanted C-Pat to step into that role, and Lofton wanted full-time duties somewhere, deservedly so, but I wonder where Lofton ends up. what's his worth now? My guess is somebody will give him a 1-year full-time gig, but if not it would be a great pick-up for anybody off the bench if he doesn't. I'd take him back at the right price. at his age (40) he can't be demanding too much.
