"Wrigleyworld"

My daughter who is home from college and who also has the Cubs gene, brought me a book to read over the holiday.  

"Wrigleyworld" by Kevin Kaduk is a funny look at the 2005 Cubs season.  Kaduk takes the summer off to spend at Wrigley.  His take on the season is often funny, sometimes sad (like the game where Prior was hit in the elbow) but he almost always captures the sights and sounds that are "Wrigleyworld".  Little did he know at the time that the 2006 Season would suck even more than the 2005 season.

I was with him on those cold spring days when the wind cuts right through.  "The Hawk" finds you when you are at Wrigley in April, it comes with the territory.  Then there are the  sun drenched days later in the summer when the smell of beer and fried foods wafts through the air reminding you that you can only be in one place.. "Wrigley Field".

So, I thought maybe reading some good books about the Cubs during the off season might make the winter months go by a little quicker, even though today it's 60 outside... how bad can that be?

Are there books others have read specifically about the Cubs that they can recommend?  Any one else read the book "Wrigleyworld"?  What were your thoughts?

I wrote a review of this book...
... on March 24. I've met Kevin and he's a cool guy who did really spend the year doing what he said he did.

For learning about the Cubs and their history I would recommend:

"Wrigleyville" by Peter Golenbock; it's not just about the neighborhood, but about the team's entire history.

"Wrigley Field: The Unauthorized Biography" by Stuart Shea. Great history of the team through the ballpark, and there's also some tidbits on Chicago history within.

There are more, but those will give you a good start.

A couple of others.....
"Cubs Nation" by Gene Wojciechowski follows the Cubs through each regular season game of 2004.

"Baseball, Chicago Style" by Jerome Holtzman and George Vass discusses both the Cubs and that other baseball team in Chicago.

Football and basketball are just things to do between baseball seasons.

Soriano+ DLee + Ramirez = 1 Damn Good Meat of the Lineup AND Zambrano +.....(We're gettin there)

actually wrote a book.. You mean someone published her book...

maybe if Carrie wrote a book entitled "If I were to suck at life: this is how I'd do it" I'd consider reading but we don't get that.

She
compiled and edited it.  It's an oral history told by Cub  players.  None of Carrie's actual words are in the book.

I have that book too.

My copy is signed by Ryne Sandberg -- I got it at a signing he had at Barnes & Noble when the book first came out.

Thanks for the suggestions folks.  The winter will go by all the more quickly if I can read about what awaits me in the spring/summer.

I liked "Wrigleyworld" because it spoke about the neighborhood and the people who live there.  Lakeview was my home for about l5 years in the 70's and 80's.  I could hear the roar of the crowd from my house on Roscoe and Kenmore, but in the early 70's, Wrigley was a place I avoided.  In l985 I was pregnant with my daughter and lived at Kenmore and Wellington.  In those days, bleacher seats were under $10 and provided a great afternoon for me and my yet unborn child who, it turned out, also acquired the Cubs gene.

I'm looking forward to the good reads.

The other day
at the Joseph Beth down the street from me here in Cincinnati, I took the copies of Wrigleyworld and placed them OVER the displayed Reds books in various places in the store. Hee!
