Should I Buy Season Tickets?

Well, they aren't really season tickets, but it's a package.

I would get to see the Peoria Chiefs in Kane County along with a few other teams.  It's 10 games.  They sent me the prices because I'm so going to the Midwest League All-Star game, so I signed up for info to get those tickets.

Last year I was planning on going to a Chiefs vs. Cougars game, but then I just kind of ran out of time.  I felt very dumb because Don Veal started pitching here, and I could've seen one of our best prospects.  Then he was promoted, so I missed him.

I'm not very well informed on the Cubs minor league system.  If anybody wants to tell me about prospects that may start at Peoria or move up to Peoria, I would appreciate it.  I want to know more about the players I could watch.

I kind of want to buy the package, but I don't know anything about minor league games either.  How is the experience?  I've been to two minor league games, but that was in 4th grade.  I didn't pay much attention to the baseball diamond back then, and I forget anyway.

Maybe you informed people could help me make a decision.  My parents ultimately have the final word since they will pay, but I haven't decided how much I should beg.

Thanks in advance.  Go Chiefs!

Fun fun fun
I have gotten to see the Chiefs/Lugnuts a few times in recent years when they have played the local mariners affiliate.  Its tough to beat A-level ball for the entertainment.  Only in the minors do you get the bratzuka firing off brats into the stands!

Yep
That reminds me, I need to reserve my season tickets for the Syracuse Skychiefs soon.  Anytime you have an excuse to watch that much baseball, it is a good thing! I definitely recommend it.

Added to the chorus.
I'd highly recommend it. You'll enjoy the experience, you can get up closer to the players, the people who work at Kane County are very friendly, and if you have several chances to see Cub prospects playing for Peoria, you can report back for us.

It's hard to tell who'll be playing there at this point; you might check the Boise Hawks (short-season A) roster for people who might move up from last summer.

A fun experience if you don't expect a whole lot
The one major drawback about Minor league ball is the quality of play on the field.  If you don't mind watching guys missing balls through their legs, or dropping routine fly balls or looking completely lost at the plate against a PTP, then Minor League Baseball is the venue for you.

I watched the Cougars play a few times and I have a friend who used to work in their front office and I've never not enjoyed being at the game; however, fundamentals are lacking and usually if a team's best prospect is on the mound ( say Donald Veal), the game usually lacks a lot of punch.

Quality of play doesn't bother me
These guys aren't major leaguers.  Every Friday night people crowd in to see high school football games, and what they are to the NFL is far worse than what the Peoria Hawks are to the Cubs.

Although I do love minor league baseball. my biggest complaint is that the game itself seems to be rather secondary.  A lot of the festivities revolve around contests, giveaways and mascots dancing.  That's OK, but sometimes that make it a little difficult to follow the game.

If you really want to follow the game, sit behind the plate with the scouts.  Those guys are serious and sometimes, if you ask nicely, they'll talk to you about the players they're watching.

A little song, a little dance. A little seltzer down your pants

Yes
Behind the plate seats at minor league games are the best, and they are usually not that hard to get.

Peoria
There is the possibility that I will be moving to Peoria, and you better believe I will get season tickets for the Chiefs if I do. I went to one Kane County game in 1994 and enjoyed it, back when the Marlins were the big league club. I know Kevin Millar was on that team. Good times. I highly recommend getting season tickets, if for no other reason than it's live baseball.

Yes, you should.
Spark, minor league sports are great!
When I had the time, I'd go see California League
(Single A) games. There are great parks not far from me in cities such as Lake Elisnore, Rancho Cucamonga....the games are inexpensive....and I love minor league hockey, too. Oh, to have the extra time.....

California League
I second that. I saw a San Bernardino Stampede-Lancaster Jethawks game in Lancaster in 2001 and I sat in the first row behind home plate for $8. It was hotter than hell out there, but the game was a lot of fun, and I saw future Mariner Chris Snelling too.

I used to watch
the Boise Hawks, but that was back when they were an Angels minor league team.  Memorial Stadium was still a lot of fun; the stands were close to the action, and the ballpark attractions were fun too.  I realize that's not really related, but hey, if someone gets a chance to go see the Hawks, I recommend it.

Hmmm, a lone voice here
I'd check out at least one game before committing to season tickets and seriously consider whether you'd find the time to go to game consistently.  It's affordable, but if you don't use them ... it's a waste.

I've been to several Peoria games and always had a great time.

A couple of games, not 10
I think 10 games might be a bit much.  It's been a few years since I've been to a minor league game but they are fun if the stadium isn't too terribly crowded.   But I'd start by buying tickets for just four games, one in May, June, July, and August.   Given that you're going to the ASG, that would leave only three.

Now if the question is "I need to buy 10 games to get the ASG tickets" then maybe I'd do it, but it would have to be in the section right behind home plate, not down the lines.

I live 7 minutes away and go all the time
Read JoshinLa's 2nd paragraph and then treble it for the Cougars - but I am biased against those between innings shenanigans (sp?)

That said - I used to go have to pick up my kid from his job in concessions before he got his license, so I have probably seen parts of 50 games over the last couple years.

The level of play is inconsistent. You never know if a grounder up the middle will bounce off someone's noggin or you'll see a 360 one bouncer how did he do that?

The pitching is REALLY inconsistent. Guys who throw real heat but don't know where it's going.Every batter seems to get to a full count.

The food is GREAT. The fireworks after most games are a good reason to stick around.

I used to be able to see the fireworks out the kids' bedroom window, but then my maples matured.

Buy the cheapest package you can and then sneak into the most expensive seats. Unless you are behind home plate, you will be sitting on bleachers.

If you can get a package that lets you sit in the lawn area - get 'em. Then move.

Josh Beckett, Dontrelle, Charles Johnson, Ryan Dempster all played for the Cougars. Go here for more
