Soriano and Dr. Dre

Discussing Soriano's press conference and his striking resemblance to a certain rapper.

Star-divide

I just finished watching Soriano's press conference on cubs.com and a few things struck me.

First of all the guy seemed nervous, uncomfortable in front of the press. This is probably gonna be the most press coverage he's ever gotten, more than in NYC given that he's the star on this team. And from what I gather he was loved in NYC so there was never any media or public pressure on him (at least not the kind he'll get here if he starts 0-20)... This all just makes me hope he gets off to a good start so that we don't see him instantly disintegrating.

Secondly I hate all the "I'm a great athlete, I have great power and my great legs" cr#p being repeated over and over. Reminds me too much of my ex-favorite player. Been there done that.

And finally, because everything written above was all filler, let's get down to the real shocker...and this is bizzare to say the least. This man has an eerie ressemblance to the Dr.Dre of the World Class Wrecking Cru days. Freaky:

Anyone agree?

Well, I'd love to hear you
in front of the press in another country.  How's your Spanish?  Your English is only so so.   If you can't understand the difficulty, then you're just a moron.  Maybe if he had an interpreter it would be different.
BTW, no one cares what you hate about a press conference.

I'm dominican imbecile...
No personal attacks on you so no need to lash one out one me. I'm making O-B-S-E-R-V-A-T-I-O-N-S, the guy has been one of my favorite players since he started playing with the Yankees so STFU. I've seen him playing at the quisqueya in DR with the stars and he is ALWAYS LIKE THAT. I myself would be nervous in front of 100 cameras no matter the language or country, but then again I'd also melt down from the stress if I had the media on my ass after a bad start. THATS ALL. Chill out brother, I love every player that comes out of my country because they are our Pride, we don't make chevys and Fords from where I'm from, we make baseball players.  Idiot. Oh and I thought stating opinions was what this site was for, especially the diaries.
GREAT SUCCESS!!!

Sorry if your offended
I thought the dairy was stupid and just trying to stir up garbage.  I really don't care where you are from.  If you are from the DR, I would think you would have more pride in him than the diary stated.

by cubswin on Nov 30, 2006 8:00 PM CST up reply actions

You think?
It's about him looking like Dr.Dre, of course it's silly. SFW? If I state my being from DR it's only because you question my ability to understand the man, which I do. While I do take a lot of pride in such a player, it's not because he's from my country that I will disallow myself from observing facts and forming conclusions out of them. That would be flat out stupid. Anyways I did take back the whole him being like Sosa part, it's not true.

Oh and while I agree with Al when he says that if your opinion differs from mine you could go about it in a different way, there's no need to be sorry. I don't usually get offended by guys who like being disrespectful to others over the internet.
Continue to have your fun buddy.

GREAT SUCCESS!!!

This comment...
... was uncalled for, and I ask that the namecalling be stopped. He's right, he was simply making personal observations. If yours differ and you don't like what he said, you can say so in a nicer way.

Thank you.

Fonzie and the Press
This doesn't surprise me at all - he has always kept a pretty low profile in DC.  Moreover, I haven't seen any manifestation of his ego anywhere near that of Sammy, and the forced move to the outfield certainly would have been a great opportunity for one.

While this is obviously a good thing, I agree with the observation that he will need to step up more as a public leader.  The size of his contract certainly ought to carry that responsibility with it, and the higher profile of the Cubs will also bring more exposure.

You're right...
I take back the Sosa comparison. Soriano says those things in a well-meant, almost innocent manner. Sosa on the other hand was downright cocky.
I'm still freaked out by the Dre resemblance though.
GREAT SUCCESS!!!

by Chitown Mojo on Nov 30, 2006 6:40 PM CST up reply actions

Personally...
I'd just love for one player to stand in front of the mic and when asked "why did you decide to come to..." that the player would answer with the following:  "money.  I wanted lots of money and they were willing to give it to me."

Everytime I hear a reporter ask that question after a guy signed I start giggling.

by Maddog on Nov 30, 2006 6:51 PM CST reply actions

Agreed
I'd respect that. Someone must've already done it, no?
But then again can you imagine the disaster this world would be if everybody said exactly what they thought...chaos.
GREAT SUCCESS!!!

As someone said a couple weeks ago
I'd love to hear him say something like, "Sh*t, for $136 million, I'll play for the f*ckin' Devil Rays!"

Soriano Press Conference
To quote Chico Esquella of SNL News fame, "beisbol bien bery, bery goud, to me."  Both Soriano and Hendry said zero during this press conference.  A big waste of time if you ask me.  Although I did have a little throw up in my mouth when Soriano talked about the Cubs chances in 2007 and mentioned the name Mark Prior and Kerry Wood.  I'll personally take out a contract hit on Jim Hendry if he still is counting on either of those two.
Rommel, you magnificent bastard, I READ YOUR BOOK !!!

by BlueMike on Nov 30, 2006 6:55 PM CST reply actions

True...
that and Hendry praising Soriano's outfield defense (althought I do think he could develop into a fine fielder , he was far from that last year).
Sometimes I think we mere blogeers know more about the game of baseball than some of the GM's in this world.

funny stuff,
"Sometimes I think we mere blogeers know more about the game of baseball than some of the GM's in this world."

dead wrong, but truly funny!!!

Hendry
needs to seriously lay off the donuts and alcohol.  He looks like a heart attack waiting to happen.  I worry about his health.  I hope he's been to his doctor for a physical and taken a cardio exam of recent.

Like usual, he was tongue tied and said little of value at this press conference.  It adds to his aura of being the befuddled and dim-witted one.

Rommel, you magnificent bastard, I READ YOUR BOOK !!!

yes they are
even the Dodgers are bringing them back.

by cubswin on Nov 30, 2006 8:49 PM CST reply actions

I thought...
... the Dodgers looked odd without names on their road uniforms.

In fact, LA was one of the very first teams to have names, back in the late 60's. The White Sox and Cardinals were the others.

I think all teams should at least have names on their road uniforms. Yes, including the Yankees.

I know
some of you older guys like tradition, but I like the names on the back.
