Aubrey Huff anyone?

Just read on MLB.com that Houston didn't offer arbitration to Clemens, Pettite, Huff, Springer and Bagwell.

I think Huff would be a good fit if we got rid of Jones.  Kind of the super-utility guy that would give us some good depth at 1B, 3B in case of injuries/days off, and can play the the corner OF positions.

Not saying he's a huge offensive upgrade from Jones, but he gives us far more flexibility in case of injury.

2006:   .266/.343/.466

Hmmm
I guess I just don't see that.  His offensive numbers look pretty damn good for 4 of the last 5 years and he can play infield and outfield corners.  I'm not saying he's a superstar, but I would think he'd be a valuable second tier player on the team

by John916 on Dec 1, 2006 7:33 PM CST up reply actions

All I see...
... is a guy whose average and power numbers have been on a steady decline for the last four years. He's a butcher at third base.

I suppose as a spare part he might be useful, but I don't think Huff's going to be asking for "spare part" money this offseason.

Jones vs Huff
There is nothing wrong with Jones other than his arm , and his average against lefties. You could even argue about putting Jones in between Lee amd Ramirez against righties. I say platoon him in left with Murton . Then the decision is where does Soriano play , right or center. In which case im leaning toward right and grab Lofton for center . And while thinking of lefties what is the thought on Walker returning ?

Huff ??? no thanks

by hitmesammy on Dec 1, 2006 8:16 PM CST reply actions

Lofton
Well, I definitely wouldn't mind seeing Lofton in center for a year.

by John916 on Dec 1, 2006 8:23 PM CST up reply actions

If Soriano plays right
we can't platoon DeRosa for Jones against lefties, because Soriano and Hendry have said he'll play one outfield position only. So we'd have no centerfielder if Jones was taken out of the lineup. However, if you put Soriano in center and Jones in right, DeRosa can start in right field against lefties and Theriot can start at second in those games.

by Macy on Dec 1, 2006 9:18 PM CST up reply actions

Theriot in center?
If we did end up with Jones in center, why not try out Theriot against lefties?  I realize he's an untested commodity, but he's got decent enough range/speed to be able to handle it on a limited basis, and if Pie emerges in the second half, he'd only have to handle a smattering of games (20-25, maybe?) out there.  I don't know that I'd be upset with this arrangement...

And does anyone think Pagan will still be around?  He IS a center-fielder, so he could stand-in just fine.

by NocNoc on Dec 2, 2006 3:30 PM CST up reply actions

Pagan...
... wow, I did almost forget about him.

He seemed a decent spare part. As a fifth or sixth outfielder, he's useful.

by Al Yellon on Dec 2, 2006 3:47 PM CST up reply actions

I agree...
Let's not make him a starter (eegades), but he provides speed, range, and has mile power-potential off the bench, and he can play all 3 outfield positions.  I have no problem seeing him on the roster.

Huff?
as in, you'd have to be huffing paint to want this guy on the cubs.
Baby, you got a stew goin'

NO!!!!!!
Why does this keep coming up?
HENDRY!

by cubbiejulie on Dec 1, 2006 9:19 PM CST reply actions

He would have been okay
a few years ago.  Now he just isn't that good and he'll be way overpriced for a super utility type player.  Given his age and former status I doubt he would accept that anyway unless he just loves the Cubs (who doesn't?).

I'd rather have
Floyd as a bench player than Huff. Besides Huff isn't that good defensively even though he can play multiple positions.

by Macy on Dec 2, 2006 12:59 AM CST up reply actions

I'll Huff and I'll Puff
but I wouldn't sign Aubrey. (Sorry that did not rhyme!)

I still say bring back Kenny. Lofton that is.

Looked like budding star
A few years ago at TB but wonder if Lou liked him?

Def. like Floyd as bench/role player but afraid he'd get too much PT...prefer Jones and Murton but still need CF. Lofton for a year maybe but not much better than Pagan who could be s sleeper on squad...looked good at times last year until injury...surprised not much talk centered on CF think this could be where a deal is centered but dunno who's avail. besides Wells (costly), maybe ex-Sox on Philly now forgot name or Crisp...

The Lou connection is an intersting one
I wonder if he has any opinions on him.  A cousin of mine played with this guy in college at Miami.  He still sees him from time to time, and says he was a little burned out the last time he saw him (while he was still in TB).  It's certainly possible that he could rejuvinate his career with a contender instead of being stuck in the dungeon which is Tampa.  Just a thought, but I think there's a fair chance he improves his numbers if he's in a system he likes and feels some scurity.
