Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Vernon Wells

It has just been reported on ESPN Radio that the Blue Jays in fear of losing Vernon Wells have offered him an eye popping 6 years at $137 million. This would make for the sixth largest contract in the history of baseball. Right behind our new Cub Alfosno Soriano. Is anyone suprised by this? Does anyone think his numbers are worth it? I personally believe they are doing this because they lost Lilly, lost out on Meche, and are just trying to show some sort of progress. I also wonder how they can afford it? Can anyone tell me?

Nah....
It was hard to give up the dream at first, but I've moved onto the Ryan Church/Rocco Baldelli bandwagon!

Yet
Coco Crisp for Mike Gonzalez is? Or Miguel Bautista?  What the hell is is wrong with it. And, did you guys not notice the question I had? Whats wrong with aswering them? I'll tell you this, this is a baseball blog, and this diary is baseball related. It has more to do with why we're here than "Chrismas Present Book Suggestions."

Whoa
I was only say that because I posted the same thing on another thread, thinking it wasn't worth a diary. When you posted this, I figured I should have gone with my gut, because at least one other person thought it was worth diarying. That's all.

No one is running you down for posting it. I agree that the numbers alone make this news, BeerBaron's man-love for a she-Vernon notwithstanding.

Did I post those?
No I didn't, eye popping numbers or not, it doesn't matter. This could of just as well gone under the Soriano diary that is up right now, or the Miguel Batista, or the Coco Crisp one....

OK
If you read the diary post you would see there are many topics in it. 1) A lot of people here would like to have Vernon Wells and have talked of possible trades to get him. 2) ITS THE 6TH LARGEST CONTRACT IN THE HISTORY OF BASEBALL. 3) I find it an interesting offer considering I don't think the Jays have a lot of dough. What the hell does it matter to you that I made it a diary?
JKuhle "I'd walk through hell in a gasonline suit to play baseball."

by TCobb1911 on Dec 13, 2006 3:15 PM CST up reply actions

A lot of people
do talk about it, but it's been discussed, ad naseum, and we all know where certain people lie about this topic, it's called beating a dead horse.

6th largest huh? That's wonderful, I'm sure they hand out medals for that somewhere.

I didn't say you don't think the Jays have a lot of dough, or whatever you're babbling about.

All I said was I respectfully disagreed about this becoming a diary and you went postal.

TRAMMELL!

by Faith plus 1 on Dec 13, 2006 3:23 PM CST up reply actions

I believe
that the sixth largest contract EVER is worth talking about. Medals or not; its a big issue, it ties into how much money is changing hands latley. Also, its not beating the dead horse because there was never an offer to Wells, and it doesn't matter what people though before. I wanted to know how they feel now. Now that an offer has been made.

Could I ask..
If but as a favor that you both let it go? The diary is here. People are posting to it. It's gone in a day if no one is interested.

FWIW...
... in the opinion of the proprietor of this site (me), this topic was absolutely, positively worth a separate diary.

No reason not to start a diary...
....about this contract. I mentioned it in another thread specifically to open up dialogue and noone responded lol. So this should have it's own diary cuz it should be discussed one way or the other. It's insane.

Some clowns on other boards actually think Wells should've turned it down cuz he could get more money of the Free Agent market. WTF? How greedy can people be? Getting MORE money should'nt even be considered in a decision like this. If it is, you're one greedy dispicable human being.

Now if he doesn't want to stay in Toronto for another 6 years, that's another and the only other story with this offer.

crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, crap!!!!!

I think the offer is 6 yrs/$126 million...
But I can't see Wells accepting this. After what Soriano got, I can only imagine what someone like Wells will be going for next year. Scary.
First DeRosa. Next DeSosa!

by bergs55 on Dec 13, 2006 2:44 PM CST reply actions

You can't ?????
He never knows if he is going to get hurt or totally suck this year.

I think he'll take it and cry with happiness.  At least, he will if has a single brain cell.

by nickler on Dec 13, 2006 2:47 PM CST up reply actions

I'd take it in a second...
But that's not how a lot of these players/agents think nowadays.
Soriano turned down $90 million from the Nats and got $136 instead because he waited...who knows if Wells even wants to stay in Toronto?
First DeRosa. Next DeSosa!

Egads
Vernon is basically a younger Alfonso Soriano with better defense.

by VS on Dec 13, 2006 3:02 PM CST reply actions

If he turns it down
I wonder if they try to deal him right away?
HENDRY!

by cubbiejulie on Dec 13, 2006 3:04 PM CST reply actions

If he turns it down....
he'll be out of Toronto within 24 hours. My only wish is that it's for Brad Penny, so we could see the Penny vs. Gibbons fun ensue.

by Damen Jackson on Dec 13, 2006 3:13 PM CST up reply actions

Just for fun
I'll propose the "BeerBaron dream trade" of the day:

Brad Penny and Cesar Izturis to the Jays
Jacque Jones and Michael Wuertz to the Dodgers
Vernon Wells to the Cubs

J.P. Riccardi
is a whiny, sniveling jerk.  I am rooting for Vernon Wells to beat him, and beat him badly, in contract negotiations.

LOL
Usually, I'd take issue with you making comments like that. But in this case, I happen to agree with your characterization of Ricciardi.

by Al Yellon on Dec 13, 2006 5:03 PM CST up reply actions

why??
Maybe I am missing something because I don't follow Toronto.  What did he do to you or the Cubs??

He is only trying to make his team better in a ridiculous conference, and I think he has actually done a pretty good job.

I'd be pretty b*tchy too if I was stuck as a GM trying to compete against the Yankees and Red Sox.

by nickler on Dec 13, 2006 10:36 PM CST up reply actions

He pisses and moans at every occasion
See his reaction to Gil Meche stiffing him.  And to Ted Lilly waving bye bye.  And to the whole John Gibbons/Ted Lilly mound incident.  And to spiraling salaries.  And to the ouster of Buck Martinez.  He's a weasly crybaby.  And an idiot.  Out of one side of his mouth he bemoans escalating salaries, but then out of the other he signs A.J. Burnett to $55 million and B.J. Ryan to $45 million.
Rommel, you magnificent bastard!! I READ YOUR BOOK!!
