Help Wanted: Assistant GM

According to this story in the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs are looking to hire an assistant General Manager. With Jim Hendry's recent health issues it has been suggested that the Cubs GM scale back some of his responsibilities. Hiring someone to take on some front office responsibilities looks like it is in the works. John McDonough would not deny that the Cubs are looking at making some type of move and while the Cubs have five special assistants to the GM (including Ed Lynch and Gary Hughes), most of these guys are scouting people and seemingly not a good fit for front office work (as well as the fact that Ed Lynch is total baseball idiot).

With the departure of MacPhail, the Cubs did lose one baseball person who helped Hendry with baseball decisions. In the past they have also had people like Dave Wilder who were instrumental in putting deals together. If the Cubs are serious about this, it would be nice to see them infuse the front office with some more statistical based thinking.
