The What Did You Get for (Insert Holiday Here) Thread

So I was bored and being it's christmas and I am listening to my brand new IPod(TM) nano. I figured I'd lead off with the question what did everyone get for their holiday of choice.  With most of the holidays out of the way, I figure everyone's got most or all of their gifts opened.

So what did you get?

I got an Ipod. 2 GB

and a 6 pack of designer beer from my parents, from an upper class alchy store, Friar Tuck here in Springfield.   Sarah probably knows all about that place right. wink.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation, Bleed Cubbie Blue, or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief. FanPost opinions are, however, valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Got that from my mother-in-law
without asking!  She just knows I am a baseball addict.

Glad to hear it is a good read.

Nothing at all
Don't feel bad. My Thanksgiving trip to London & Paris
was sort of my post season/ early holiday gift to myself.
My family is notoriously lax on Hanukah stuff and I have
not even sent mine to Chicago & Boise where they live.

Did you also get
one of the hands of the Angolan child who worked in the diamond mine where yours originated?

Just some offerings from one K. West

by nextyearcub on Dec 25, 2006 9:44 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Nice
FYI, I don't buy diamonds from certain companies, like DeBeers, for exactly that reason. They are diamond companies out there that mine their diamonds humanely, and those are the companies my family buys from. But thanks for being an ass on Christmas.
HENDRY!

by cubbiejulie on Dec 25, 2006 10:30 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Oh my goodness
Did I offend?  So sorry.  Were it not for the name-calling, I would have omitted the following:

If you want to believe that the Clean Diamond Trade Act doesn't have huge loopholes and that the industry "regulated" Kimberley Process Certification Scheme works, that's your perogative.

But the fact is that anyone who buys a diamond is helping to perpetuate a market that is built on slave labor.  Present day slave labor at that.

Now we all draw lines as consumers.  I'm wearing sneakers right now that were likely built by child workers and/or people working in working conditions that would make most Americans shudder.

But if you're going to go on record as being okay with jokes about virtually anything, you are in no position to get in a snit about someone mocking you for bragging about your shiny new diamond.

Happy Holidays.

by 275 on Dec 25, 2006 11:29 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Look
Having worked at the UN and working with the DePaul Centre for Human Rights, I am well aware of the situation with the exploitation of both adults and children in diamond mining (in fact, the last bit of research I did for the Centre was regarding child labor, including diamond mining). And yes, I am also aware that the Kimberly Clean Diamond certification is frought with difficulties and loopholes. I'm not suffering any delusions about that. But, as you said, I could say the same for probably just about every item of clothing most of us are wearing, as the OAS Child Labor Act suffers from the same deficiencies. And yes, we do draw lines, and I've chosen NOT to draw one over a gift I received from my 4 and 5-year olds.

The bottom line, however, is that I was not "bragging" about my shiny new diamond, I was posting about what I got for Xmas, as was everyone else on this thread. You for some reason, chose to come after me for a gift I received that you deem not politically correct, even though, as I said, probably 50% of the items on this thread were made by 4-year olds in Thailand.

Normally, I'm all for political discussions, but this debate would have been more appropriate on DKos or another site, rather than as an attack on someone stating what they got for Xmas. Were I in your position, I would have thought it more polite to simply keep my mouth shut, rather than post something so volatile to someone I don't even know. But, that's me.

If you feel so strongly about the diamond trade, I really hope you are doing more than simply criticizing people who buy/receive diamonds. Your passion for the cause is definitely needed in that movement.

decisions
I got money to pick out an MP3 player, but now I have to decide which one

any thoughts?

by flyball on Dec 25, 2006 1:50 PM CST   0 recs

Depends on how much $ you have...
... and what you want.

I just got a video iPod, which has more storage than I'll likely ever need and can store movies too. The price wasn't unreasonable. You can find them below retail on eBay.

by Al on Dec 25, 2006 2:07 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

mp3 players
I'm definitely leaning towards a hard drive player but I'm still hesitant to give my music ife to ipod and tunes, and I keep thinking about going all ot for a multimeda player with a larger screen, but with my spotty record with electronics I'm not sure its a good idea

Depending...
... on what you're eventually going to think about doing with your music collection, there are worse things than iTunes. It's worked out fine for me.

YMMV, etc etc.

by Al on Dec 25, 2006 5:19 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Try a refurbished iPod
from the Apple store (apple.com).  Got a 30GB video iPod for my wife, it seems to be brand new and it cost a little more than half of a new one.

Plus, my brother thinks it is a 2006 iPod and I have no reason to doubt him - he keeps up with this stuff more than I do.

Presents
My brother got me this wooden baseball w/ a Cubs logo on it, part of the Cooperstown Collection. I also got a Wisconsin fleece jacket and a few other small gifts, including a gag gift Dr. Laura action figure that talks down to you.

My Birthday is on Saturday so I don't tend to get a lot of Hanukkah presents.

Baseball movies and good stuff
I got "Bull Durham" and "A League of Their Own", two of my favorite baseball movies, and the first two volumes of the annotated Sherlock Holmes.  (Oddly, I received the third volume--the novels--last year.) Oh, and in an amusing miscommunication with my aunt, I got an actual Transformer, instead of the 20th anniversary edition DVD. All in all, a pretty good day.
