Cubs Convention right around the corner
Okay, so I'm not below begging. While my wife, daughter and I tried to get tickets to the Cubs Convention over the phone, we were shutout.
So here's my plea -- Does anyone out there have extra tickets for the convention that they might not be using? I'd love to surprise my wife and daughter who attended their first convention last year and were surprised that they really enjoyed it.
Anyway, thanks in advance.

Is it really that hard
I went in 2001 and, though I had a ticket, I didn't think it would be all that hard to sneak in.
One way you definitely could have snuck in was as follows:
Find two people who you know who are going in. After they go in, have Person A take off their pass and give it to Person B who will then walk out and give you Person A's pass and you can then walk into the Convention.
Once you're inside, nobody cares if you're wearing a pass.

I agree
I won't steal
Because there is a finite number of tickets available, there really is nobody hurt by people sneaking into the Convention. Well, perhaps the autograph lines are longer, but if the Cubs would limit autographs to people under the age of 13, that problem would be solved.
In fact, the vendors there would benefit from increased attendance as they will likely sell more.

how disappointing...
STEAL!
TAKE!
PINCH!
Then, when you've done all of that (which would be nice work by the way), I can say this:
THIEF! STOP THIEF!
That's the best part of being robbed right there. STOP THIEF!
Can't wait.

They don't check for passes coming into the hotel
any one going
All this craziness aside....
Yes
for what?
And trust me, I suspect Alfonso Soriano will be answering all questions directed at Jim Hendry anyway.

I'm still kinda mad at him.
I don't consider
Oh, I have lots of questions.
ho boy...
Has he made mistakes?
Yes. Jason Marquis probably. I say probably because if he returns to his 04-05 form, he won't be a mistake.
Ted Lilly we'll see about. Lilly I would have taken at his price over everybody else but Jason Schmidt. Yes I would have taken Lilly over Zito. In a perfect world, Johan Santana would play for the Cubs for packages of gummy bears, but in lieu of that oh-so perfect world I'll take Lilly at 4/44 over Zito and 7/126 and a few of those other wretched pitcher contracts.
And as far as OBP, here's what I figure:
Juan Pierre: .333 OBP last year from the leadoff spot.
Alfonso Soriano: .368 OBP last year from the leadoff spot not to mention a SLG 200 points higher.
Cubs 2B OBP last year: .326
DeRosa OBP last year: .357 (even if DeRosa reverts his career OBP suggests he wouldn't be any worse than the Cubs got last year)
Cubs 1B 2006 OBP: .337
Derrek Lee career OBP: .363 (with a .380+ over his first two years as a Cub)
The only lineup spot where OBP would be a significant problem right now is SS, where BlueMike's One True Love plies his one-dimensional trade. Will we be a fantastic OBP team? No. But we should be quite a bit better. Enough to be middle of the pack, perhaps better if Lee returns to .400+ OBP form, Soriano stays in the .350-.370 range, and Jacque Jones doesn't shit the bed next year.
And one thing that has been improved that you OBP fetish weirdos forget is that our SLG should see a considerable jump next year and that is not to be dismissed out of hand either.
And trading for Andruw Jones. Good lord almighty I can't think of a more foolish thing to do right now. Jones will cost a TON to acquire and he will cost a TON to keep. If A. Jones then goodbye Zambrano. We aren't going to pay Jones and Zambrano 20MM per season.
And here's another news flash: The Braves have to want to trade Andruw Jones to us. Pounding your fist and stomping your feet won't make it happen julie.
And here's something else for ya too: I grow tired of listening to bloggers talk tough on the message board and then when push comes to shove in front of Hendry, fumble over themselves and their words and sound like idiots.
I've listened to the Cub Convention clips with Hendry a couple of years now and the bloggers sound worse than the fuckwits wondering if Sammy Sosa is coming back.
Please please please, all of you planning on rocking Hendry's world come CC time, figure out what you're going to say ahead of time, write it down if necessary, don't just think, I'm mad, and my anger will provide me with the words when the time comes.
It won't.
You'll sputter.
You'll sound dumb.
I will mock you forever.
At any rate, while there's plenty to bitch about for 2006, 2005, etc, looking forward at 2007, you can't say Hendry didn't go out and get us some players that have put us right now, in position to win the division next year. And he did it without trading anybody we'd freak out about.
I didn't think he would be able to accomplish all of that but lo and behold, he did.
Should Hendry be bronzed? No. But he gets something of a break from me for the time being.
Harp all you want on position players and the farm system as that is legitimate, but as far as the big league team goes, we're a helluva lot better than we were just a few weeks ago.
So for now anyway, I've put my pitchfork and angry pitchforking face away.

You misunderestimate me, my friend
where the hell were you last year then?
"I'm really angry at you Jim Hendry. Really really angry."
I about laughed myself out of my chair.
And this year I think you're not going to find a very supportive room for when you take Hendry to the meat-grinder.
Optimism is at a high level right now. Heck, even I feel pretty good going into 2007.
Wouldn't be surprised at all to see your tar and feathers turned against you.
And as far as your questions go, chances are you'll get the same answers we've already seen in print about a dozen times already. Nothing new will be gleaned.
But if it makes you feel better, go right ahead. Scream at Hendry. All that will happen is that the rabble swilling the Soriano Kool-Aid will boo your ass and Soriano and Hendry will laugh, Soriano will say you are a silly girl with bloated head, Hendry and Soriano will exchange fives then, and somebody, I don't know who, will give you a wedgie.

It should be noted
Jason Marquis? Yes. Look at the man's Stuff% last year, look at his ERA, 134 ER's last year, look at his god damned everything, I defy a single person to tell me he is worth 6mil. But FWIW, I'm hopeful, I'm hopeful we can see the Marquis that was 15-7, 3.71 ERA w/ 138 K's. Alas, his Stuff% isn't very hopeful.
Ted Lilly, prior to looking at his Translated Stats I was concerned. Looking at his Stuff% (I like using Stuff%) it's definetly comparable to pitchers like Randy Johnson, Jon Garland and Barry Zito (I could go down the list). I like him, despite being a flyball pitcher, I'm excited.
DeRosa...under average EqA, under average VORP, we payed for a career year, this i'm not excited over. I'm cautiously optimistic about Theriot, as his stuff wasn't overly impressive in the minors, but I have a good feeling about him, he'll make a good utilityman first and foremost, testing the waters at a starting job.
Soriano/Jones I wouldn't worry about, I wrote up a little bit about Jones earlier today, he's an about average slugger with the worried left handing hitting.
eh, more later....
