Wow
That's awesome.  He's made it clear that he wants to manage, and he's showing that he understands that he'll have to prove his worth like everyone else.  I hope he succeeds.

For as much as I wanted
Ryno's name to actually be "Ryan" when I was a little kid (Ryan being my name).......please, give credit where credit is due to the CUB that will more than likely be #4 on Al's 100 Top CUBS list......

My guess.....

  1. Ernie Banks
  2. Fergie Jenkins
  3. Billy Williams
  4. Ryne Sandberg
Although, in my ballot.....Sandberg = #1 ;)

hilarious that sosa isn't in that group
seeing as though he nearly equaled ryno's homer output in his four best years alone. Of course homers aren't everything. I have no problem with the omission.

See the Sosa debate from earlier today.

Baby, you got a stew goin'

I was going to Joke about Sosa on that list...
...but I figured everyone was rubbed raw from earlier.

He's definetely Top 10.....
Sosa's numbers up until 1998 were nothing special.....never topped .340 OBP, hit .300 once.....as a matter of a fact....Sosa hit .256/.304/.443 his first 10 seasons....

no way
Sandberg ahead of Jenkins for sure.

Maybe Banks, Williams, Sandberg, Santo?

Though maybe 3 and 4 could be switched?

All I know is...
...I'd really like to see at least one of "Tinkers to Evers to Chance" make the top five, at the very least. Preferably Frank Chance. He led the NL in on-base percentage in 1905, y'know. Oh, and won two WS. While being the manager at the same time. (Led the NL in OBP in 1905... Baseball-Reference.com, how I love you so. Even if you DON'T list his CERA.)

I love this speculation...
... and while I will tell you that all the players you mention here are indeed on the list, and high on the list, you are forgetting other eras in Cub history.

Speculate away!

I'd have to imagine...
That 3 Finger Brown has got to be pretty high on the list as well.

Durocher era, and the Depression
These two eras have produced a few already, but Glen Beckert, Don Kessinger, and Randy "Don't Call Me Todd" Hundley have to be there along with the obvious names of Banks, Williams, Santo, and Jenkins.  And we've seen Hands, Hickman and Altman already.

The Depression Cubs had Billy Herman, Gabby Hartnett, Hack Wilson, Kiki Cuyler, Lon Warneke, Bill Lee, Billy Jurges, and even Rogers Hornsby for a few years.  In addition to Riggs Stevenson, who we just saw, those names all have to be there, right?

I'm not surprised he's managing.
I thought he would manage from the day he had that interview on WGN Radio the day they retired his number.  He sounded like he wanted to come back, but first he needed a break.

I'm happy for him.  I guess I really have to go see the Chiefs now!

It will be interesting
It will be interesting to see how he does as a manager. It seems to me, that though he should have as good a knowledge of the game as anyone, my impression is that he is not a very good communicator.

It would be nice to see him come out from that shell. I am rooting for him.

There's a difference...
... in being able to be glib in a public sense (i.e. what you might have seen of him on TV), and being able to communicate in private, among people who are in the same field as he is (i.e., baseball players and coaches).

Anyone who's heard Lou Piniella as a TV commentator should be able to see this point.

Matt Lauer is glib
So says Tom Cruise
I very excite about this upcoming season! Jenqui!

all the talk
about having a former player manage for a long successful span may not have been wrong after all.

Made a quick check
via the "Search BCB" tool for the word Sandberg and didn't find this diary.

Still hoping that Peoria leads to Knoxville (where I could catch several AA games) which may lead to Chicago again.

Off season trading is one of my favorite sports.
