Winter Meetings Day 2: The "Shocking" Trade

A diary for Day 2 rumors and such.

The Washington Post this morning had more information on the rumored "shocking" trade that Jim Bowden mentioned yesterday and was posted in a diary here.  The big name is Manny and the Nationals could be involved in the 3 way deal including the Giants not the Cubs.  Felipe Lopez would be one of the players heading to Boston.  Washington would get prospects/young players with Manny heading to SF.  Noah Lowry was mentioned as one possibility for Washington.  It wouldn't surprise me if Jon Rauch was also included since his value won't be higher than right now after his performance last year.  In a separate note, the Nats are shopping Ryan Church so he could be included.  Seems he has aggravated the organization for the second straight year.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

That's not too "shocking"...
Even better is I heard this morning that the White Sox are talking to the Yankees about sending A-Rod to the Sox for Garcia and Crede. That's a bit more shocking if you ask me!

I'd be surprised...
... if the Yankees would do that. First of all, Crede has issues with his back. Second, A-Rod would have to approve this deal. I suppose he would, but who knows.

That
would benefit both teams greatly. I bet if that was out there, the Yankees aren't smart enough to pull the trigger.

by JodyDavis on Dec 5, 2006 10:16 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I am
not sure how much that would benefit the Yankees.  Garcia is pretty solid but not exactly a world beater and Crede has struggled pretty hard until last year.  I suppose he might be coming into his own though.

I would envision a Yanks/Sox trade
as a little bit bigger.........something like....

Joe Crede, Charlie Hauger, Juan Uribe, Freddy Garcia for A-Rod and Melky Cabrera....

A-Rod
will never approve a trade to the White Sox.  Never.  He's got nothing to prove there.  Any A-Rod to the White Sox speculation, IMHO, is a waste of time.  Any A-Rod to anywhere speculation is a waste of time now, but especialy to the White Sox.

I wouldn't imagine that
A-Rod would love playing on the South Side but he may lift his NTC to play there....being that they are a year removed from a 90 win season and 2 years removed from a World Series victory..........he really wants to win, that's all that matters to him now.......and the White Sox would give him that opportunity.

Staying with the Yankees doesn't?

yes
A-Rod's best chance of winning a world series is staying with the yankees.

Really?
Hmm. Seems to me they haven't won one since he's been there.

by Al on Dec 5, 2006 3:30 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It certainly hasn't been because of him
And I agree, his best shot at winning is staying with the Yankees.  Some pitching and they're the best team in baseball.

that
they made the post-season has a lot to do with him. that they didn't go to/win the world series also has a lot to do with him. he was awful in the playoffs. awful.
DEJESUS!!!

Yeah
He struggled mightily. But in his defense (Yea, I'm an A-Rod apologist), that was pretty rare as he usually hits very well in the playoffs. .297/.392/.469 in division series play (brought down by his horrible '06 performance) and .315/.413/.611 in LCS play.

by VS on Dec 5, 2006 4:12 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

but they get in the playoffs every year
that's the best chance a team has of going all the way. When will a CUBS management figure this out?

by cashcowsquirtingsourmilk on Dec 5, 2006 4:07 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I doubt that winning is all that matters to him
I've heard that he's also quite aware of how good of a player he is and of the legacy that he might leave behind.  Regardless of what Bonds does, should A-Rod stay healthy, he's got a real, real good shot at breaking whatever number Bonds throws down for HR's.  Doing that in a Yankees uni would mean much more than doing it in a White Sox uni.  THe White Sox are a 2nd tier team and I'm not writing that just because I hate them.  A-Rod's not going there.

Oh, I completely agree.....
I was arguing for arguement sake......i did start out by saying "I wouldn't imagine that A-Rod would want to go to the South Side"

Oh, I agree then
Hypothetically, it makes great sense.  There probably isn't a team that could make as good of an offer as the White Sox can.  Crede and Garcia (should Crede be healthy and if not the Sox could intead put in Josh Fields).  In such a HR friendly park as Comiskey, A-Rod would make a huge impact.

But it's all irrelevant.

by NO100 on Dec 5, 2006 3:03 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not making this up...
Bruce Levine (who is pretty reliable) said the Yanks and Sox were discussing the possibility of a trade late into the night. It makes sense. The Yankees need pitching badly and they are down on ARod. Plus, the Sox don't want to spend the money to keep Crede next year.

Whether A-Rod would approve a trade to the Sox is a totally different story. But you never know what can happen during these meetings. We'll see!

ESPN radio in NYC
is stating that Pettitte may sign with the NYY by the end of the week........they definetely wouldn't need much help in the rotation if that happened...
  1. Mussina
  2. Pettitte
  3. Wang
  4. Johnson
  5. Igawa/Hughes

Pettitte signing in New York
means one less team chasing the tail of Ted Lilly.  Oh boy.

the separate note
i wouldnt mind the cubs plugging ryan church in in center next year.  the nationals seems to have decided that their CF has to be a super fast/no power leadoff type in the mold of nook logan or brandon watson.

the cubs have a guy like that in chris walker.  id be happy to send walker and an arm to the nats for church.

i'd also check into the availability of felipe lopez while we were talking to trader jim.  think the nats would take a flier on mark prior??

Agreed
This is driving me crazy.

Is it that hard to sign at least one pitcher? It must be, I guess.

Until we get the SP situation settled I'm going to be nervous.
