Schmidt to the Cards?

I am hearing that the Cards are now in on the pursuit of Jason Schmidt. This rumor can also can be found here.

I know we have had plenty of Schmidt diaries, but to me this is different now that the red birds might be involved. All the more reason to get him.

I am not too excited about us landing Lilly for $10-12 million while watching St. Louis come away with Schmidt. Lilly is a waste in my opinion. It would have been better to have brought Maddux back for the amount we are rumored to be considering on Lilly.

Yeah
This has been kicking around for a couple days. I know Jockety has met or will meet with Schmidt, but other than that little seems to be coming form there.

What I'm curious about is the report by the KC Star that the Cubs offered Schmidt 4 years for $60 million. No, I don't have a link, but have seen this rumor on northsidebaseball.com, talkingcubs.com, and gatewayredbirds.com.

rotoworld
speculated that it might take 4/60 to get him, and that the cubs might be the ones willing to do it. there has been no real report of such an offer.

this makes getting schmidt doubly important
not only will he make the cubs better, but we will prevent the cards from improving.

Bingo
My reasons for posting this since I had not read it anywhere on BCB. Besides Schmidty kills us.

wasn't that one hitter thrown...
the same day that randy johnson threw his perfect game? I think it was....Schmidt got almost no press for his gem as a result.

That's correct.
May 18, 2004 was the date. Here's the box score of the Schmidt game. The Cubs' only baserunners were Moises Alou, who walked; Matt Clement, who struck out and reached on a dropped third strike; and Michael Barrett, who singled in the fifth inning.

I was at that game
I remember cold night, great seats 3 rows behind 1st base, and our pitcher threw a great game only gave up 1 run.
I can't believe Al put Rick Wilkins in the top 100 cubs.

I'm in St. Louis today
And I've come across no mention of Jason Schmidt being a target.  Cards fans are more interested in gettign Jeff Suppan and Jeff Weaver re-signed.
