Bynum traded

Source: The Baltimore Sun

Thank Hendry!  No more Bynum, ever, ever, ever!

The Baker era is slowly slipping away... and that's only a good thing for the Cubs.  Watching Bynum play in all those games was painful... I don't care how fast he was.  Maybe he should have gone into track and field instead of baseball.

Whoever...
... the PTBNL is, it's worth it. I'd have traded him for a used infield rake.

creepy
both you and bluemike both said "used infield rake"

Set up for future deal
PTBNL at this juncture means they have been talking about others....I think depending on Meche's eventual status the Cubs could be talking about a multiple player deal...

to include Jones and something else they may want as in one of our AAA pitchers

So what do the Cubs need?  CF'er (rental property), what does Baltimore need? A power hitting corner OF'er, and possibly bullpen?

This could be interesting

You're thinking too much
This was an attempt to clear room on the 40 man roster, that's all.

So I'm Wondering
Just how is it that the Cubs always manage to dump all of their trash on the Orioles?

Any move to get rid of Bynum is an improvement, but as an Orioles miniplan holder (it's amazing what Field Box seats directly behind the plate can entice you to do), Korey and LaTroy Hawkins have been enough.  Bynum may really push me over the edge, and we all know how he responds to heckling.

I clicked on the link expecting Neifi to be the player traded back ....

maybe it's Hawkins coming back....
coming back to take the pressure off Jones

by LuisSalazar on Dec 6, 2006 8:30 PM CST up reply actions

Hawkins
left Baltimore.  He's now with Colorado.  Maybe the Cubs can get Korey Patterson as the PTBNL instead. ;)
One day, the dream will come true.

Theriot is the right-handed Bynum/Macias type
super utility, actually they should send Theriot to catchers school just for the sake...

Fundamental defense, good speed, OBP and willing to do whatever is Theriot....kind of like DeRosa a few years ago.

we didn't last year
we could have dumped Prior and somebody else for Tejada according to some reports.

Because...
... the Orioles are run by idiots.

Nuff said.

by Al Yellon on Dec 6, 2006 8:35 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed
And I suppose there is more satisfaction from watching multiple lousy ex-Cubs and knowing they are no longer stinking up the Cubs rather than watching multiple lousy generic players.

No kidding...other than Hundley the O's have been
willing dumpsters for the Cubs...Maybe Dempster is next to wear their uniform?

by DudeVf1 on Dec 7, 2006 12:08 AM CST up reply actions

I'm with DML on this one...
...I think Dempster has a chance to regain his closer's job next year.  I think this past year was something of an aberration.

Yay!!!
Moving Bynum makes us a better team next year, whether we get anyone back or not.  Of course we would have been a better team next year had we given him to the O's no charge and paid his salary, but at this point that's just nitpicking.  Nice to see the direction of the organization changing.

For the record...
...as of this moment, your 2007 Cubs and their middle infielders:
  • Soriano
  • DeRosa
  • Izturis
  • Theriot
  • Barrett (hey, he played shortstop, right?)
Available in the minors, in case Hendry needs more middle infielders (on the 40-man):
  • Patterson
  • Dopirak
...yeah. We need more middle infielders. Stat.

...I'm just holding out for my dream of carrying a half-dozen middle infielders on the roster.

(I thought the fact that I included Barrett as a middle infielder let on that I was in on the joke.)

by Ross on Dec 6, 2006 10:05 PM CST reply actions

Very Prescient
Speaking of Macias ....

(From Thursday's Post)- Washington could sign former major leaguer Jose Macias, who spent last year playing in Japan, to a minor league contract that would give him a chance to be the backup third baseman, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. Macias is a .256 career hitter over six full major league seasons in which he has played in the outfield, at second base and at third. . . .

by cubbiejulie on Dec 7, 2006 9:17 AM CST reply actions

The PTBNL is...
... minor league RHP Kevin Hart:
Hart, 23, owns a 20-19 minor league record with a 4.51 ERA (165 ER/329.1 IP) over three professional seasons. He has struck out 318 batters in 329.1 innings of work while allowing just 27 home runs in 69 games (57 starts).

Also note, this is an example of how to include info like this in an existing diary rather than start a new one, since it's clearly related to the Bynum deal.

by Al Yellon on Dec 7, 2006 11:15 AM CST reply actions

FWIW
I really have to thank Bynum in a way. He made a great memory for me this year.

Bottom of the ninth, Cubs losing to the Brewers 3-2, Bynum steps up, smacks one up to RF to tie it up, we wind up winning the game. Was a great game.

Thanks Freddy, glad you're w/ Baltimore though.
