Meche a Royal (Grain of salt)

Update [2006-12-7 13:48:54 by HanOfTheBluegrass]:Gil Meche's five-year deal with the Royals will be worth $55 million-$60 million, the Kansas City Star reports. --madtown

Gil Meche to play for Kansas City.

(Source listed is Ken Rosenthal)

At least one report (Cubs Hot Stove also said FoxSports has reported it)

I guess we wait and see. This surprises me, as we've heard rumors the Cubs were going hard after him.

Who's the next target? Another 4-5 pitcher or a trade?

My guess is bat-wise, we end up with Church, Lofton or Floyd within the next day or so.

This may have appeared elsewhere
(my apologies if it has) but Bruce Levine reported yesterday about a Daryl Ward signing which was to occur any day now.

Haven't seen that elsewhere.
Of course, I haven't heard Ward's name before, anyhow.
BIG NAME PITCHER!! This sig is from the future, but didn't hear the specifics.

40-man roster management
My guess is that a signing or two like this would wait until after the Rule 5 Draft and move another player off the 40-man roster.

As for Meche and the Royals...thank goodness.

Even more interesting..
Reports out of Houston say Garland may very well already be an Astro....

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/4385643.html

This would surprise me (about Williams) after just giving up Garcia for two young guys.  He still needs to field his own staff next year.  Maybe he's got the inside track on Pettite or Zito

by LuisSalazar on Dec 7, 2006 10:02 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Tavares and BUckholtz????
Apparently, Williams is having a fire sale on his pitchers.  Why did the Cubs trade Bynum????  They could have had Contrearas for him.

by NO100 on Dec 7, 2006 10:05 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Hirsh is the key
He's the top Astro prospect.

by rlpete on Dec 7, 2006 10:11 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That would make it a different story
I've heard that Hirsh has made big strides the last 2 years.

Overall, though, I really don't like these moves by Williams because he's not improving, and actually hurting, the team's chances for 2007.  This is a team that's a WS contender for 2007.  These moves to me says that he's looking to build for the future.

So long as we're on rumors...
Newsday is saying the Cubs may make a trade for a Dodgers pitcher -- just not Brad Penny. They name Mark Hendrickson. He's not BAD, but he's also not that GOOD. And... he's a lefty. Between Hill, Lilly, Marshall and Cotts, we have four lefties that could see time in the rotation already. I don't want another, unless it's Barry Zito, and even then I think that's pushing it.

by cwyers on Dec 7, 2006 10:05 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Well, it's possible Marshall would be gone...
He is often mentioned with JJ as being part of trade possibilities.

Hendrickson?
Ugh. Other than being gigantic, there isn't much to like here. He walks a lot of people, doesn't strike people out, and isn't tough on lefties. I'd rather have Mark Redman than this guy.

by JodyDavis on Dec 7, 2006 10:12 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Noooooooooooooooo
to Hendrickson.  He's just plain bad.  I see no upside there.  He's old already and I wouldn't bet on last season being any sort of breakout season at age 32.  In 2005, his ERA+ was 73.  I think that is closer to his abilities than last season.

The Cubs should sign Tomo Ohka if they want cheap insurance before trading for Hendrickson.

If Meche
goes to KC, it would be for the money. They (well, Ken Rosenthal) are reporting that the Cubs and Jays offered basically 4 years, 40 million, while the Royals offered 45 million over 4 years. KC is my other favorite team, but I think Meche would be much better off in Chicago.

by JodyDavis on Dec 7, 2006 10:19 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

ESPN
Is now running a headline that Meche is close to signing with KC, "according to Steve Phillips," who probably read foxsports.com.

by JodyDavis on Dec 7, 2006 10:28 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

LOL. Good point.
Or he read it on the scroll at the bottom of the screen, and they read it on this blog.

So basically...
... the "experts" are doing the same things WE are doing to find out information.

Welcome to last place
That is what they would say to Meche as he arrived to sign his deal in KC. It is a shame, I am a Cub fan, but you have to feel sorry for Royals fans. That team in the late 80's and even into the 90's was good. And it has been run into the ground. It isn't even like this signals a huge run back to being run well. Front office is a mess, and, if I'm not mistaken, don't they have an ex-Walmart exec at the helm. Glass? Isn't the guy loaded, why run that team so cheap. KC is a great baseball town, it deserves better.

I think
that the Royals are going to be a much improved team over the next few years. They've got lots of blue chip talent on offense, and now they've started to work on the pitching a bit.

The Royals were my first favorite team, so it's pained me to see their small market hijinks over the years. I think Dayton Moore will get this team going the right direction. They won't become the Braves or anything, but I can see them battling for the AL central in a few years. Really! Stop chuckling, that's not cool.

Please lord, let it be so!
I don't want Meche anywhere near the Cubs.

by VS on Dec 7, 2006 10:53 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Can we please get Zito then?
7/112?

Meche
espn's phillips just said it is now a 5-year deal, not 4. terms not yet disclosed. that makes more sense for Meche.

I hope Bluemike
doesn't break down and cry.

Seriously, this is a guy who has not won more than 10 games more than one season.  If the Royals want to blow that much dough on him, they should feel free to.  Even if the rest of us are wrong, at least we won't have to see him and the Royals sure aren't making the postseason any time soon.

Holy Crap!

Gil Meche's five-year deal with the Royals will be worth $55 million-$60 million, the Kansas City Star reports.
Incredible. Meche will lead a Kansas City rotation also set to include Odalis Perez. Brian Bannister and Luke Hudson will be the heavy favorites for the next two spots, with Jorge De La Rosa and Zack Greinke among those likely to battle it out for the remaining opening.

by madtown on Dec 7, 2006 12:21 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

un F believable
I was going to post this as diary. 55 MILLION for
Meche. Lilly seems like a bargain now.
The market is officially insane
Zito will go 100 million ( Mets)
At this rate Jeff Weaver will get 3/40
and Suppan 4/50

I have always liked the Royals but  this is insane

I love the ballpark. I love the city. I love the fans. Aside from how we've played this year, there's nothing not to like about Chicago." Greg Maddux 7/29/06

Agree
Just ridiculous. $11M a year will make you like living in loserland, I guess.
I very excite about this upcoming season! Jenqui!
