Rule 5 Draft

Um, ok i guess we'll take some cash from you Krivsky:

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Cincinnati Reds worked out a deal to obtain troubled outfielder Josh Hamilton, sending cash to the Chicago Cubs after they picked him from Tampa Bay in the first round of baseball's winter meeting draft Thursday.

Ha, i wonder if the amount of money we got is enough to sign slammin sammy to a bench role...(totally kidding)

I'd take Sammy on the bench.
Sammy, Hendry, and most of Chicago probably wouldn't, though.
BIG NAME PITCHER!! This sig is from the future, but didn't hear the specifics.

haha
me too, but sammy would never go for it, thatd be the ultimate insult..."hmm, down one in the ninth, do we have any hitters left...ohhh yeah, i guess we can throw sammy in there to pinch hit.  Hey sosa, grabbed the corked one and get out there and tie this ballgame up!"

We lost
three players in the rule 5 draft too.

The Brewers took Edward Campusano
The Astros tookLincoln Holdzkom
The Blue Jays took Jason Smith.

Of the three guys we lost, I'd be shocked if the Astros kept Holdzkom on their roster all season long.  Smith is just a utility infielder (and 30 years old) and no big loss.  Campusano we might regret losing, as he seems like a good LOOGY prospect.

I think we could do without Josh Hamilton and all his problems.

holdzkom
had been doing well to start off the fall league, anyone know off hand how he finished up?

Horrible.
He ended up with an ERA of over 6 or 7.  They had him pitch 3 innings at a time as the AFL season progressed and he really didn't do so well with it.  Supposedly he looked good early when he was just going an inning at a time so maybe starting or long relief won't be his thing.

Campusano
I agree that we will probably regret letting him available for the rule 5 draft. I believed he was real close to ML ready but in reality, he's not in the top 5 lefty CUb prospects, but was probably the closest to being ready.

Oh well, can't protect everyone and Good Luck to him.

I saw Holdzcom pitch this Fall in the AFL and wasn't impressed whatsoever. He'll be back with the Cubs.

Wonder if Hamilton could be part of a bigger deal between the Cubs and Reds? I can dream can't I.

Either way, I hope Hamilton can get his life straightened out and from everything I've read, he's come along way from his addiction and is indeed turning his life around. You never want to see anyone throw their life away abusing drugs, but to see someone so talented do it is just a total shame.

So, if Hamilton doesn't stick with the Reds, he goes back to the DRays, correct?

Up next, trade Jones for a krappy pitcher and sign Cliff Floyd. Oyyy Boyyy.

Pinella factor??
wonder if sweet Lou had a hankering for Hamilton and recommended him to Cubs...doesn't matter now.

Don't recall Dusty and Hendry being this tight should be good development for the club that GM and manager working so closely together.

Cubs are basically tryng to buy a winner. It's worked before, and it's backfired big time. Maybe in this crazy economic climate it's the right time to try it again.

Report is
That Reds manager Jerry Narron's brother coached Hamilton on a high school traveling team in North Carolina.  Narron wants to believe the kid has turned around, so Krivsky might as well risk a few thousand dollars for what might be a big talent.  Recall the Reds kept Wily Mo Pena on the roster for a couple years when he was no good, then were able to trade him for Arroyo.

Bynum
The player to be named later has been named.  23 year old Kevin Hart.  11th round pick in 2004.  Career 4.51 era in the minors.  Threw a lot of innings last year in the class A Carolina league.

So....
... essentially, the Cubs trade John Koronka for this guy.

by Al on Dec 8, 2006 7:49 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That's OK.
Koronka's nothing special.

Besides, after being stuck with Bynum, to get even A ball roster filler in return is better than I expected in return.

Does Soriano's defense at 2B really cost more runs than in LF? He makes a lot fewer errors in LF since misplays and mental mistakes aren't figured into the stats, but I have to imagine that his mistakes are more physical at 2B. Any thoughts? Is there a statistic on this?
