I was browsing Cubs blogs today, and Andrew, a poster over at The Cub Reporter, in a post in this thread gave a link to the best rumor i've ever heard. The link is to Halo's Heaven, the Angels blog in the SB Nation, and the part you are interested in is (boldface mine):If you think The Red Sox want the Moon for Manny Ramirez, you should hear the list of players the Marlins want in a trade for Miguel Cabrera - but they called twice after being told no, not to change their offer, just to underscore thir seriousness in wanting to trade MC. Word around the Cactus League is that the Cubs are going all out to land him.
Wow. I'm pretty close to speechless. Previously i've stated that i couldn't see the Marlins trading away Cabrera, but if they are considering it the Cubs should go all out to land him. So, what would it take? I don't think the fish would be interested in Prior or Zambrano, as they would cost too much. I think (as do many others, including Rob G. at TCR), that any deal would have to start with Rich Hill and Felix Pie. Given Jones's contract and the presence of Ramirez, Murton would be expendable in such a deal. I think it would take at least one more minor leaguer to get this done, and it would probably have to be a SP - Jerome Williams, Angel Guzman, or Mark Pawelek. I hope we'd get away with dealing Brian Dopirak instead of one of the pitchers, as Dopirak is blocked by D.Lee.
So is it possible? Could we get Cabrera for a package of Murton, Pie, Hill, and one of Dopirak, Guzman, Williams, and Pawelek? If not, how many of that last group would it take? Where do you draw the line?
