Cap Standings

I have a tradition, or perhaps you'd call it a ritual or superstition, while attending Cub games.

I never go without a baseball cap. And, over the last few years, I have done this: I'll wear a cap until the Cubs lose while I'm wearing that cap, then change, wear the next one till they lose, etc. This doesn't mean that once they lose, I'll never wear that cap again; I can come back to it later in the season. Don't worry, I have LOTS of caps to choose from.

The only exception to this is my 23-year-old fitted Cubs cap, which I wear only on Opening Day.

This year, I've decided to keep track of the club's record while wearing specific caps. You can track the progress here throughout the season. Click on the thumbnailed cap to see a full-size photo. I'll update this with each game I attend, and there's a link to this post on the right sidebar under "Stat Corner".

I need to get to Mesa next year...
if only to get a hat.  Much nicer than anything I found in Florida this year.

by hokie316 on Apr 14, 2006 9:13 AM CDT   0 recs

I do the same.
I'll wear different hat combo's all the time. I have a Cubs room and I'll rearrange things of past players and the Harry Carry bobble head until they win and then no one can move a thing. Kind of Feng Shui for a Cubs winning streak. The Sosa bobble heads are in "time out" for the time being.

lol
I can just picture your Sosa bobblehead w/ his nose in the corner.

That reminds me of my delima.  I have a pretty cool Cubs jersey, but it has the #21 on the back.  It had "Sosa" above that when I got it a few years ago, but I had a girlfriend take that off (I don't wear other guys names on my back.)  I really don't want to go number-less... but don't really like to "represent" Sosa.

I just don't know what to do.

Speaking of jerseys...
...I got my first (and only) Cubs jersey this spring.  It's a kelly green batting practice jersey that they only wore on St. Patrick's day...and then, only for BP.

I wore it "out" for St. Patrick's day (took the day off work...let's face it, drinking Guinness has to take priority on March 17th) and received more compliments on my attire than I did when I wore a tuxedo for the first time....

I love that jersey, though...simply because no-one in Denver has ever seen anything like it before!

Supporting other players...
When I went to the Cubs Convention I'd buy the game worn jerseys. I have a home, an away, and a BP, listen to these guys

Home: Chad Meyers
Away: Trinadad Hubbard
BP: techincally it's a Wendell Kim

Amother note, I do the same thing, Al.

Superstitions
Are a great part of baseball.  It seems that every fan has one. Be it a hat, shirt, underwear, etc.  Mine, when I feel the Cubs have to score, to either put the game away, or, to come from behind to get a lead, I will sit on the floor, legs crossed with both hands on the floor, and rocking back and forth.  I didnt even relieze I did that until my girlfriend pointed it out to me.  She thinks I'm a crazy nut, she just doesnt know baseball.
First Boston, then the White Sox, its now the Cubs turn.

When we start getting in trouble in an inning
I start twirling a curl around my finger, fowards, and backwards, forwards, and backwards, forwards, and backwards, until the inning is over.  Like indytaz, it was an old boyfriend that pointed this out to me.

Supersitions
I've got an Indians fan friend who takes  baseball cards of the Indians opposing players and puts them in the freezer, to "cool off" the other team.  Everyone has their own little superstitions I guess...

I have an old wrigley shirt
that I consider to be an 'Ol faithful.  I put it on when times get rough.  And if we're really hurting, i put my dad's old Cubs shorts on.  Even if I'm at the stadium or otherwise in public.  Just put them right over my jeans.

Also, I rub the names on my autographed hat when they're batting.  It got me a foul ball once!

When I'm playing softball
before I go up to bat I kiss my believe bracelet.

When I was a kid I remember my dad throwing slippers at the t.v. a lot.. I don't think that was so much a superstition as it was repressed anger from 1984.

Speaking of believe bracelets and softball
I put on a fresh believe bracelet when the 1st game of Spring Training started.  I take it off and put on last years b4 softball games b/c, while it didn't bring any luck to the Cubs, my softball teams kicked a$$ last year!

Two seperate superstitions for one bracelet!

by shadoobe2 on Apr 14, 2006 10:36 AM CDT   0 recs

So...
... I'm thinking she's got 154 more batches of molasses cookies to bake this year!

by Al on Apr 14, 2006 11:47 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

no
i do not abuse the molassas cookie rule...maybe 3 or 4 times a year...i afraid every time I ask the magic is worn off..it cant last forever I'll save it for a cardinals game

your mom is baking cookies tonight.

Tonight's Game
We should all hope A-Ram can play tonight.  A-Ram has murdered Pirates starter Victor Santos in his career; he's 7 for 16 (.468) against him with five doubles and a HR.  Meanwhile, Neifi is 0 for 3 with a walk vs. Santos.  Here's to hoping A-Ram's doopa doesn't hurt any more.

The Trib says A-Ram "is likely to play in Pittsburgh" though that doesn't specify tonight's ballgame.  The same article in the Trib says J. Jones likely won't be ready to go until the trip to Los Angeles on Monday.

Juan Pierre is 1 for 1 with a HR vs. Santos.

On the other side of the coin, Derrek Lee is only 3 for 18 vs. Santos. Two of those three hits were HR's though.

Michael Barrett is only 2 for 19 vs. Santos and Hank White is 1 for 1 vs. Santos, but I don't see Barrett getting two days in a row off as hot as he's been.

After yesterday's less than ideal line-up, I'm hoping for:

Pieree
Walker
Lee
A-Ram
Murton
Barrett
Pagan
Cedeno
Marshall

Go Cubs!

One day, the dream will come true.

by brianp88 on Apr 14, 2006 11:13 AM CDT   0 recs

I'd take that lineup
It's just that, given the inexplicable lineups the past two days, I have my doubts as to whether or not we'll see it. If I were Hendry, I'd pull a Billy Beane and TELL Dusty that that was going to be his lineup today. But hey, that's just me.

How can any
person have so many problems with their butt/groinal area? It seems like every few weeks A-Ram pulls something around his boy parts. Sheesh---get that guy into a yoga class, asap.

I sure hope so
Sarah, the Trib says Ramirez is going to play in Pittsburgh, but didn't specify tonght.  He's killed Santos previously so if he even feels 80% I'm sure he'll want to get out there.

Stretching I'd imagine, maybe butt massages?  He's been having a rough couple days, I'd imagine...

My guess is
hot tub and butt massage. And if the massage therapist is male, I would think that would be akward. Someone is going to be quitting someone at some point.

Okay, I'm totally not a brokebackphobe, either, quite the opposite. But I just can't lay off that joke.

Thats sounds
good to me for a lineup.  Some may want Barrett moved up because of his hot hitting, but putting him behind Murton may give ol' Orange Guy some good pitches to hit.

Superstitions
The only superstition I hold to is that I usually wear my 1914 Cubs hat, even though I own about a dozen.  And I wear it only because...it fits best.

I'm not superstitious at all...
mostly because I used to be.  I had this very pretty necklace.  I decided to wear it when I had big tests in like third grade.  I was getting good grades, so I kept wearing it for tests.  Then, I got a grade I wasn't happy with and decided that nothing works and that I control my grades and that my necklace wasn't going to help. I hated third grade.

I wish I was in Pittsburgh this weekend.  I would have scheduled it if I would have known I was going to be free this weekend...well, relatively free...

Geez, guys...
I feel left out...I don't have any superstitions. Hmm..that'll give me something else to think about today...

And people wonder
why I should get a "life?"I do the same damn thing. "Can't wear THAT cap again. Quick, where's the Sandberg HOF cap? Or where did I put that cap with the Old Style logo BIGGER than the "C" or the......or....or the one with....
I don't understand why they say that to me.
And that's even when I go to Padres games, and the Cubs aren't in town...

By the way, didn't Victor Santos just win the Presidency on "The West Wing?" He's starting tonight for the Buccos?

I wear ONLY my old Cubs cap to every game
I got it in 1989, the evening I went to go see my first night game at Wrigley. It is not pretty any longer, but I wear that battered thing to every Cub game I've gotten to since.

During a game we caught in that oh so PAINFUL last 2 weeks of the 2004 season in Cincy, my wife and I thought we'd try something different. My family and I did a reunion there and everyone was decked out in our Cubby blue. My 3 year old niece was absolutely adorable in her Cubs cheerleader outfit. But I left the old cap at home and wore my equally battered old 1998 Cubs Wild Card cap, and I even took the one I had in storage all those years since then and gave it to my wife to put on. We were hoping the magic would rub off.

Unfortunately, that was the night Greg didn't have all of his stuff and we lost, although we did get to watch one monstrous Alou shot that, for a moment, united every Cub fan in that place with absolutely wild abandon. For a moment, we thought we might get a handle on things. It was not to be ..

Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

by cubnational on Apr 15, 2006 1:28 AM CDT   0 recs

Ok.
So a friend of mine went to his house to try to watch the game last night and for some reason (might have been the storm), his baseball package would not let us watch the game.

But we won...

So what do I do tonight?  The game's on WGN.  Do I watch it?  Is it better luck for me not to????  I don't know what to do!!!!

LOL

Sounds like a U2 song... I'll also cry without weeping, talk without speaking, scream without raising my voice...

I'll distract myself by putting on a play featuring my superfluous Peeps menagerie that I have somehow acquired in the past two days... Happy Easter all!  And if you need an extra sugar boost, I have plenty to go around!!  PS they're fun to blow up in the microwave.
