Mark Cuban

We need Mark Cuban and I'm only half kidding about what we should start doing.

Star-divide

The Cubs need a change in ownership.  End of story.  We need an owner who will not tolerate losing.  An owner who is as passionate about winning as any 27 year old major leaguer getting his first chance.  An owner who pours his heart and soul into the team. an owner who will not allow his team to be mediocre.  We need Mark Cuban.

I propose we start an email campaign to make Mark Cuban aware that Cubs Nation wants him to buy this team.  I was looking online and sure enough, we can email him through the Mavs website.

Yes, I am sort of kidding, but only half.

I've written a draft of an email if anybody is interested.  I am very frustrated with this team and as much as I hope that something could change, as long as the Tribune owns this team I don't know if it will.  I haven't lost hope but I can't take more losing.  Let's do this.  Imagine if it worked.  We really have nothing to lose.

Or what you really need...
is a rich Sparkles.  I would do all those things you say. :)

But I'm not rich.

Maybe you should send the email to the someone from the Tribune, and tell them to sell the Cubs to Mark Cuban.

Cubbie Blue will always sPaRkLe in my eyes, but please stop losing. PLEASE!

no problem
although I am not sure what he knows about baseball, i bet he would find someone who did.

Cuban has said publicly that he wants to
But the Tribune company doesn't want to sell.  The tribune company hasn't done that poorly imo.  They are spending money.  While I also would love the Cuban owning the Cubs I would be afraid if they were to sell that someone not as willing to spend would buy the team.

My God, NO!!!
While I admire Mark Cuban's support for his team and what he's able to accomplish, he is nothing more than a crying baby, and the AAC is full of bandwagon fans.  As a Spurs ticket holder, i'm pissed of hearing him complain about something at the end of every game, whine when he doesn't get his way, and insult the fans of other cities and their landmarks.  He is the center of attention of the Dallas Mavericks, instead of the players on the court.  There was nothing I loved more than seeing Mike Finley (still being payed by Cuban) slam a 4th quarter dunk just feet from Cuban for the Spurs.  Pwned.

What we need is an owner like the Spurs have.  I don't even know who the owner is, and that's the way it should be!  An owner that will not tolerate losing, is passionate about winning, will not let his team be mediocre, and above all else, has built a fan base second to nothing i've ever seen.  San Antonio goes crazy for the Spurs more so than i've seen any other city/sports team.  Some will argue that we are a one horse town, but the great relationship between the city and the team/owner is the main reason of it.   More importantly, our owner keeps his mouth shut and lets Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobli, Robert Horry, Bruce Bowen, and gang be the center of attention.

BTW, Go Spurs Go!!!  Game 7 Monday at the AT&T!

completely different
salary cap, and purposely tanked a year to get duncan to build around.

by mike bornemann @ Bleed Cubbie Blue on May 21, 2006 8:18 PM CDT up reply actions

ditto.
You hit it on the nail right there:  Different Salary Cap makes for different ways of doing business.

by sanantonecub on May 21, 2006 8:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Not Exactly
The year they tanked was the year David Robinson missed 70 games due to injury.  He was my favorite player as a kid.

They kinda had him sit out...
quite a few of those games to improve their draft position.

Keeps his mouth shut?
I guess he silently sent the Jason Terry tape to the League, whining inwardly that JET actually didn't take it lying down when Michael Finley did the piledriver.  Yeah, that's a really courageous owner.

by dfrancon on May 21, 2006 9:33 PM CDT up reply actions

interesting idea, but...
I wouldn't say that Mark Cuban doesn't tolerate losing. Maybe when the Mavs at least reach a final we could say that.

No, Just No
No on Mark Cuban. Want to get ostracized by every other team in baseball? I don't. Likely, the other owners would never approve such a sale.

by BeerCub on May 21, 2006 9:29 PM CDT reply actions

What are you talking about?
n/t

by Santos Sorrow @ Bleed Cubbie Blue on May 21, 2006 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions

In Case You Hadn't Noticed...
...baseball owners as a group are a very staid bunch. Always have been. It's very possible the last thing they'd want is Cuban in their midst. The rest of the owners also have to approve the sale before it would be official. Right now, as presently contructed, I don't see baseball approving a sale to Cuban.

by BeerCub on May 21, 2006 9:42 PM CDT up reply actions

And beyond that...
... Cuban grew up in the Pittsburgh area, is an unabashed Pirates fan, has at times hinted that he would like to buy the Pirates.

If he does get into baseball, it'd be as Pirates owner. If, as BeerCub says, it would even be approved.

by Al Yellon on May 22, 2006 3:58 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah...
Because as is, we don't get ostracized.
Before there was Carlos...there was Eddie!

by thekansasian on May 21, 2006 9:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Huh? "As presently constructed"
I don't understand.....explain further. Why wouldn't a sale to an individual like Mark Cuban NOT be approved?

by Smooth Jazz Man San Diego on May 21, 2006 9:59 PM CDT reply actions

Lawsuits aflying
Unless the owners can come up with something that shows Cuban to be of bad moral character such as connections with organized crime or casino gambling, I don't think it would be prudent to vote him down because he is a colorful guy who is a fly in the ointment.  I could see him suing and MLB possibly losing their anti-trust protection after a very long and embarassing series of court battles.  For goodness sake, they let in Marge Schott.

by FrankSereno on May 22, 2006 5:03 AM CDT up reply actions

nope they can him reject for ANY reason
or no reason at all. That is how MLB is set up
and remember they STILL have the anti-trust exemption.
It has already BEEN litigated and it takes an act of
Congress to remove it

The owners ARE a very staid bunch, They tried to keep
Veeck out and then drove him out. Legally they can do
whatever they please and it is VERY unlikely they would
approve Cuban to own the Pirates let alone the Cubs

by jessica on May 22, 2006 8:43 AM CDT up reply actions

Veeck...
...Is a great example. The early Cuban, if you will, in terms of personality. In the 50's, he tried to move the St. Louis Browns to Baltimore and baseball wouldn't let him. He goes broke, has to sell, and the new owners got permission to move to Baltimore. They just wanted Veeck out and found a way to do it. Nothing has changed since then rule-wise to prevent a scenario like that from happening again.

by BeerCub on May 22, 2006 8:56 AM CDT up reply actions

Again...
....other than to use the word "staid", for better or worse, the owners can be personified by Bud Selig. A personality like Cuban's would not mesh, and make no mistake, it's all about the meshing. Look at how long it's taken them to find someone they like for D.C. If they didn't mind Cuban and Cuban really wanted in, he could have had that team years ago.

As for Schott, didn't she inherit the Reds?

by BeerCub on May 22, 2006 8:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Re DC
They actually rejected at least two offers of
signicantly MORE money than the one they approved
because they did not "want" the owners. One of them
was the son of liberal financier and Republican enemy
George Soros and a high ranking Republican member
of Congress publically threatened to REMOVE the
Anti-trust exemption if they sold it to him ( later
said he was misunderstood of course). Most business
tend to sell the highest bidder ( assuming the bidder to
be solvent & relieable which was not an issue here) but
not MLB.

Re
Mark Cuban is a get-rich-quick narcistic asshole.  He's the perfect NBA owner, where it's all about posing and thugging and me-me-me.

Is it time for the Cubs to be sold to an independent owner capable of combining running a successful business with winning championships?  Absolutely.  Is Mark Cuban the person to accomplish this in MLB?  Absolutely not.
