The Tony Womack Era...

...resumes.  According to the Sun-Times Womack could be on the field this weekend.  Of course Dustbag thinks it's a great idea.

"I'm hearing good reports on him,'' manager Dusty Baker said Wednesday. "I'm hearing he is playing pretty good. We'll address that when I get home. It's not a bad option.''

The Cubs are off today, and Baker and general manager Jim Hendry could have Womack in the house by Friday. The 12-year major-league veteran was in Class AAA Iowa's lineup Wednesday night in Sacramento, Calif., which is familiar turf to Baker.

"I talked to people out in Sacramento [on Tuesday], and they told me Womack was playing good,'' Baker said. "They said he wants to play good enough to force me to call him up. That's fine with me.''

Just what we need 8 2b on the roster.  To think people claimed this wouldn't happen.

...note that Baker says force me to call him up.  Guess you can blame Baker for the players he was given.

Ryan Theriot, we never knew ye
Welcome back, Tony Womack. If our patience with you appears to run a bit thin when you've been here for a month and have posted a .225 BA and a .275 OBP, and you've shown no discernible defensive skill whatsoever at 2b ... well, try not to take it too personally.

He's going to hit that well?
He's going to post a .225 ba and a .275 OBP?  Wow, that's optomistic.   I think he's lucky to crack .200 in OBP.  This is a truly bad player at the very end of his career.

And it makes no sense of any kind whatsoever for him to be on this team.  Its hard to construct any team where he makes sense, but the Cubs are about as extreme a bad fit as there is.

Can't say
we couldn't see this coming when they first signed Womack to that minor league offer sheet. Whee! Now we have two Freddie Bynums!

Womack was
out of the lineup last night when Iowa played at Sacramento. I understand that he is currently on his way to Chicago riding a Schwinn to get in shape for the upcoming playoffs.

And this is how
you make a bad team worse.  So does Dusty just not think our offense is a problem or does he think Womack is better than what we've already got (he's not)?  How does this come close to making us better?  Oh right, he's Dusty's guy so talent doesn't matter.  Maybe we can convince Grissom to come out of retirement too.  Yep, I can see it now, we can put on the field everyday the corpses of Tony, Neifi, Grissom, Bynum, Jones, Hairston, Blanco and Pierre everday and Dusty would be happy.

Seriously, Womack played some outfield for the Yankees last year.  How long until he starts taking at-bats away from Murton?  My guess, not long.

Stupid stupid stupid.

Mike Fontenot
While we pull our hair out over the possibility of having Tony F. Womack joining the club, Mike Fontenot is hitting very well at Iowa:

130 AB; 3 HR 8 RBI; 315/378/454 (831 OPS) 13BB/26K

My guess is that if Fontenot were called up (and if Dusty actually played him), he would be our best offensive option at 2B.

I really can't take very much more of this frustration.

Good point
Fontenot, Theriot, Neifi, JHJ, Walker.... what the hell do we need Womack for?  We have plenty of options at 2nd already.  Maybe they're planning to play him in the outfield?  Why?  Restovich was a much better option and Dusty wouldn't play him.  How can he possible argue that Womack is better than Restovich, he never saw Restovich play.

And MR. Felix Pie
is tearing the cover off of the ball from what they reported on the radio. I think it is time to see if he can do it in the big game. But then again, why bring him up and get ruined by the current staff. Let them bring Womack up and screw with him, then when they fire the whole staff and we get some major league caliber coaches up here THEN bring up the prospects!!!

Actually
Why don't we fire the MLB coaches and bring up the minor league coaches that apparently work (and know their young players) and the young players with them.

Womack
didn't play Wed nite and isn't in the starting lineup today. The only explanation is that he's headed to Wrigley. Don't blame hendry for this. It's pure and simple a baker decision. Get rid of him before he does any more damage.
