Open Thread: Cubs vs. Braves, Friday 5/26, 1:20 CT

Suspensions were announced today for last week's brawl. Michael Barrett's, as expected, was 10 games. No other Cub was suspended.

However, expect Barrett to appeal, so any suspension will likely be delayed for several weeks.

Apropos of nothing, but I had to show you guys this, you've got to check out this post at Federal Baseball about yesterday's Nationals/Astros game. Hilarious!

In the meantime, there's a game to be played at Wrigley Field today.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Carlos Zambrano
 C. Zambrano
Cubs
vs. Tim Hudson
 T. Hudson
Braves
3-2 W-L 4-3
3.53 ERA 3.95
71 SO 45
38 BB 21
9 HR 4
vs. Atl -- vs. Cubs
Z is starting to pitch more consistently; his 71 K's lead the NL and are 2nd to Johan Santana in the majors. He is 2-1 in six lifetime starts vs. the Braves.

Tim Hudson has faced the Cubs only once: last August 22, also against Z, a game the Cubs played well until Kerry Wood (in relief) gave up a two-run HR to Chipper Jones in the 9th, his second two-run HR of the game.

Jacque Jones, who faced Hudson often in the AL, is 9-for-29 lifetime against him, with 2 HR.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

He should not appeal
...and just serve the 10 days now.  The Cubs will lose most of these next 10 with or without Barrett.  If he appeals, he'll probably serve when Lee is back, and that'll be yet another 10 games without a full team.  I'd rather have zippo the next ten days than a half a team now and a half a team then.

by MikeJ on May 26, 2006 10:24 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Also think he should not appeal
Russ Springer got four games for beaning Bonds. Ten games for punching a guy doesnt really sound that horrible to me. Anderson got five so it all sounds pretty reasonable to me. I'm a little surprised Podsednik didnt get at least one or two.

In terms of strategy on what his absence could mean to the team. It's all out the window now. I dont care about numbers. Jacque Jones versus Tim Hudson, w/ Barrett, w/out, day games, night games. Nothing seems to make a difference anymore.

I would disagree
He will probably get the suspension reduced if he appeals it.  Plus, Springer threw at Bonds for no reason.  Barrett punched A.J., because he's A.J.  It's not like he clocked Omar Vizquel.  MLB should assume that A.J. instigated it in some form based on his history.  Nearly everyone, opponents and teamates alike have hated A.J. in hist time in the big leagues.  Krukow used to talk about this during Giants broadcasts.  He cut A.J. some slack because he honestly felt A.J. had no idea he was such a jerk.

Shoddy Reasoning
He threw at AJ, because it's AJ?

Yah, well Springer threw at Bonds, because it was Bonds.

Regardless of who he punched, he still punched someone, unprovoked. You could argue that AJ running him over incited his rage, that's fine, but it was a clean play, so you cannot justify Barrett's reaction to this play. Had Barrett stepped aside, and AJ went out of his way to railroad him, then yes, punch AJ, but Barrett completely blocked his path to the plate.
You could have argued AJ deserved getting punched for slapping the plate, but Barrett admitted he did not see that.
You could argue that AJ shouldn't have gone over to get his helmet fine, but then AT MOST all Barrett has to do is push him out of the way, not sock him in the jaw. A punch to an undefended, unsuspecting person is just not warrented.

Just because someone is widely disliked, doesn't mean they deserve to have their reputation brought into question on an unrelated issue. Say for example, in the past, on three occasions, AJ ignited a brawl by muttering something to another player, then yes, you could use that as reason to check whether he did in fact say anything this time.

But you can't use the fact that his teammates in the past have disliked him to judge whether he was guilty or innocent of wrong doing.

The 2 situations are different
I think it's pretty clear Bonds didn't say anything to Springer before Springer threw 5 pitches at him.  Bonds hadn't homered off Springer in years, so I don't know what action he could have taken to offend him, but maybe something was done in the distant past.  No one besides Barrett and A.J. knows if A.J. popped off and was asking for it.  Based on A.J.'s history, and his actions the very next game, it's not far fetched to think he did something in addition to heading toward the Cubs dugout.  We'll never know.  In A. J., we are talking about a guy who will sky hook the ball to 3rd after am opposing hitter strikes out.

by MHef08 on May 26, 2006 8:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

HUH?
"No one besides Barrett and A.J. knows if A.J. popped off and was asking for it."

So you're blaming the guy who was sucker punched by someone with a reputation as a hot-headed punk?  You're taking the side of the person who said on the radio before the game that he needed to start a fight?

There is one person who popped off verbally and physically, Michael Barrett.  Barrett has never denied that he said, "I didn't have the ball, bitch."  Barrett has never claimed that AJ said anything to him...yet.  Who knows though if Barrett will sometime soon as Barrett's story keeps changing.

Amazing.

Read Phil Rogers column, finally someone in the print media gets it, amazing that that person works at the Tribune.

Suspension
I am not saying Barrett shouldn't be suspended, I'm just saying there's enough doubt to reduce it.  I don't think A.J. deserves the same protection as respected guys like Omar Vizquel, Frank Thomas, or Greg Maddux who do not have a long history of inciting opponents.  I'm sure A.J.'s Twins teammates loved getting drilled when they came to the plate after his antics in the field showed up an opponent.  He tried to start something the next day with Big Z. but Z didn't bite.  I am also saying that the Bonds/Springer issue wasn't a good comparison.

For the record, I'm not going to bash any White Sox fans for sticking up for their guy, even if he's a bad guy.  At some point, every team has a guy like that and the fans are stuck with them for a while.  At least A.J. is trying to win.

by MHef08 on May 27, 2006 11:17 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Incite or irritate?
I'd say there is a different.  I fully agree and have said that AJ no doubt irritates opponents.  I've noted that there have been controversy surrounding him at times.  But I can't see what he's done wrong in any of the recent "troubles" surrounding AJ.

"I'm sure A.J.'s Twins teammates loved getting drilled when they came to the plate after his antics in the field showed up an opponent."

On the contrary, at least one former teammate, David Ortiz, said that AJ is an irritant to opponents but a good teammate.

"He tried to start something the next day with Big Z. but Z didn't bite."

I bet to differ.  That's the biased view (not surprisingly) that Santo has expressed, but it's not in line with the facts.

Some have said that Zambrano was yelling BECAUSE AJ tapped his chest.  The facts are that Zambrano was screaming at AJ BEFORE he tapped his chest.

Zambrano has no room to have a hissy fit when a player shows him up since he was showing up Sox hitters by pumping his fists after striking out Sox player(s) in the first inning.

Re
Not only are you correct concering this particular incident, but the person involved in it that has the reputation for picking fights during a game is Barrett.

What Barrett did is inexcusable and, like before when he lit a fire under the Astros, it's going to hurt the Cubs.  Fortunately, it won't matter this year.

Give the whole team 10!
Give them all the next 10 games off! It will give the fans a welcome break from the headaches and the players can figure out how to play the game over the next few weeks. And open up Wrigley for a block party, so there is actually something enjoyable going on inside the fences!

Should be only 5 games..
..cause he only hit him with ONE fist, i.e. 1 game per finger.  So if Barrett gave him a 1-2 combo punch, 10 games would be fine.  And if Antonio Alfonseca punched AJ, it would be a 6 game suspension.

I'm with Brenly (for once)
I don't like it when Umpires and Officials intrude on the baseball. (Not that what we watch from my beloved Cubs always resembles the baseball.)

I think 10 games is too high.  6-8 is the most I expected.  For goodness sake, that's near what they used to get for steroids.

If he appeals and they reduce it, that's great.  But, I also agree with the sentiment that you might as well just get it over with and let the sucking sounds continue without you.

My vote is to just do the time, even if the punishment does not fit the crime.  There are plenty of reasons this is not a great ruling, but it's small in the scheme.

Here's hoping we see Crazy in a Good Way Z.

Did he dodge a bullet by not being suspended?  I thought he was in danger of a few games since he is on the dl, and entered the field?

by gp1966 on May 26, 2006 11:29 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Probably wouldn't have mattered...

The Cubs could have just timed his return from the DL that many days earlier.

by salparadise23 on May 26, 2006 11:50 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not so worried about today....
as I am about tomorrow. If we follow suit, Horacio Ramirez will come off the DL and pitch for the first time since April April 5th and throw a complete game. Fortunately he already has a few under his belt so it won't be another milestone against the Cubs.  Though if he hits a HR THAT would be the first of his career. Wait it does get worse, the only CG he threw last year was against the Cubs. Darn.

Ok on the positive side of things, we'll have great weather for this series. Will be nice to fire up the grill and have some Cubs baseball to watch. Even if we dont get the final score we all want.

I can't believe it !
No suspension for AJ when he clearly started the brawl - unbelievable.

10 games for Barrett when all he was doing was defending himself.

Why would that be ? Does everyone hate the cubs ?

by chiswede on May 26, 2006 11:46 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

how?
sorry, but remove the Cubs glasses. Pierzynski may be a hot dog, however the hit was legal and how you play the game. Barrett admitted that he was wrong and didn't even see Pierzynski slap the plate. Had Barrett not slugged AJ, Pierzynski would have gotten no suspension or fine.

Scrubs
Since Big Jim and Crusty are constantly on the lookout for former Cubs to salvage from the "Retirement Home For the Useless," I thought that I might give them a current wishlist and their current addresses -- thus saving time when trying to find them. So here it is --

Alan Benes and Will Cunnane -- Memphis
Jimmy "Captain Puffy" Anderson -- Albuquerque
Micah Bowie -- New Orleans
Scott McClain -- Sacramento
Jason DuBois -- Buffalo
Enrique Wilson -- Pawtucket
Manny Alexander and Bobby Hill -- Portland
David Kelton -- Richmond
Sandy Martinez and Michael Tucker -- Norfolk
Terry Adams -- Indianapolis

These are just the Triple A guys -- I'm sure there are some more at Double A -- heck Andy Pratt is at Nashville --

So let's work those waiver wires, DFA lists, and Unconditional Release announcements!! In no time at all we can fill the new 25-man roster.

Ah, but isn't
that better than our other option: Murton, who hit a home run two games ago, and is hitting 50 points better than Bynum, and knows how to take a walk? What is it that Baker doesn't get? What is it he's trying to teach Murton? What is it that he is teaching Bynum?

I think I'd be happier if we fired Baker and had random citizens of Chicago manage the team for the rest of the year. Even if Sox fans were eligable.

Like AL says
"just when you think you know everything about baseball, something will happen to let you know that you don't."

Did anyone think he would walk 4 in the 1st inning? Furthermore, did anyone think he would end up having a no hitter through 5? His 7 k's so far are a very nice surprise after that rocky 1st inning.

Then again, Dusty will probably start day-dreaming about Bob Gibson and the "good 'ol days" and leave him in there for 160 pitches

I can blame him for never once trying to start Ryan Theriot, not even when this team clearly need to change things. I can blame him for not even coming out to talk to Dempster during the debacle. I can blame him for not motivatingthe players to play their best baseball.

Re
Well, first JJ throws a lazy arc at Neifi!, apparently assuming the runners are only going to take their standard bases (3rd to home, 2nd to third, 1st holding).  The ball's a bit high, but nothing that any 12 year-old can't catch.  Neifi! lets the ball go off his glove from a complete lack of concentration and then has to go chase it down while the runner from 2nd has rounded 3rd, seeing what a lazy throw it was, and once Neifi! muffs it, he takes off for home.  Neifi picks up the ball and then airmails it over Barrett's head, where it then ricochettes off the bricks like a pinball up the first base line in foul territory, so the runner on 1st who originally wasn't going anywhere winds up on third.

This is why you need grizzled vets in the lineup, dude.  You play kids, and who knows what they might do.

Jones catches the ball at the track in RF
he makes a lacksadaisical throw into the IF Neifi Drops the cut off throw from Jones

the braves send the runner from 3rd.. Perez airmails the throw to Barrett which gives the runner that was originally on 1st to move up 180 feet to 3rd

Well...
Jones really didn't have to rush the throw.  The runner at third was going to score regardless, and you never see two runners score on a sac fly.  He just threw it back to Neifi, who screwed things up.

Before there was Carlos...there was Eddie!

by thekansasian on May 26, 2006 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yup.
Sad that this is Jones' favorite month, isn't it?

All the way back up to .277, and a long history shows he'll subside after May.  So everybody was right to predict .255-.260 here at BCB for 2006.

Hell, give him three more years!!!!!

Oh wait.....already stuck for two more....sorry.

But hey, .260 at RF with a weak and inaccurate throwing arm solves the RF problem for three years, right?  Problem solved.

By the way, anyone know the top Free Agent relievers Hendry will be signing this offseason?

by The Jade Scorpion on May 26, 2006 4:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You can't blame it on Jones
The people who blame Jones for being Jones are the same ones who booed Corey for being Corey and failing in the leadoff spot and are the same ones who booed Latroy in the closers role.  A guy is what he is and if he is misused then it isn't his fault.  Jones would be batting > 300 if he hadn't faced lefties and was platooned like everyone had called for before the season.

Neifi batting in the 9th today should be the Nail in Dusty's coffin as well as the whole coaching staff.  Fire Hendry for making horrible offseason signings 2 years running.  Fire Gene Clines and Gary Matthews for the cubs refusing to take pitches.  Fire Rothschild for the huge number of walks and all the pitching injuries.  You can only say you can't help the injuries for so long.  Fire Dick Pole for not setting Dusty straight and Fire Dusty for being a horrible in game manager and also for not firing the rest of his staff.  Chris Spiers can stay since I'm just happy Wavin' Wndell is gone.
Last but not least cut ties with all our injury prone players and veteran journeymen.   You can't build on the 03 team anymore when there are only 2 guys left on the 25 man roster with any regularity.  Bring in some young guys and as they develop fill in with free agents but for now the Cubs are done.

by JonH on May 26, 2006 5:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Disagree.
---"You can't blame it on Jones...

The people who blame Jones for being Jones are the same ones who booed Corey for being Corey and failing in the leadoff spot and are the same ones who booed Latroy in the closers role.  A guy is what he is and if he is misused then it isn't his fault.  Jones would be batting > 300 if he hadn't faced lefties and was platooned like everyone had called for before the season.."---

Hmm.  I suppose if you only count Jones' good days, he's the Cubs' best player.  That's not the point.

Jones was signed as an everyday player, advertised as an everyday player, and promised to peform in a manner that would justify not needing a platoon.  Seeing as how he took a 3-year, $16-million contract to be an everyday player, he is at fault for not producing.  You don't just forgive and forget Jones for batting .277 so far and .050 (or whatever) against lefties - he is at fault for not performing well enough.

He was sold to us as a masterful defensive upgrade over Burnitz - this hasn't come to pass.

He was sold to us as a brilliant baserunner - this hasn't come to pass.

He was sold to us as having the talent of an everyday player - this hasn't come to pass.

Worst of all, he has been sold to us as the final solution to RF for three years - nobody is buying this salespitch.

So yes, it is in part Jones' fault for promising what he cannot deliver, and for making the least of many of his opportunities out there. Just like it was Hawkins' fault for having a bonus clause put in his contract for being a closer - a role he fancied himself in for the Cubs, and refused to ever suggest relinquishing it for the good of the team.

And yes, not wanting to listen to coaches, make adjustments, or practice in the offseason is Corey Patterson's fault.

Jacques Jones is not blameless; he is simply not delivering what he promised, and he is certainly not offering to sit against lefties so that the team could benefit.  He is not the victim of people "not using him right" because Dusty doesn't sit him down against every lefty, during Sunday games, and against all white pitchers with moustaches to maximize his stats for him so that he doesn't ever have to improve upon his weaknesses.

Jones promised, and has thus far failed to deliver.  That's on him, not Dusty and the rest of the organization for not rearranging the universe so that he only ever has to play againt people he has previously succeeded against.

Waidaminit.
JONES didn't promise us those things; Jim Hendry promised us we'd get them from him -- this despite the fact that it was well known what Jones' strengths and weaknesses were and are, and I think Jones himself knows them even if he cannot admit them publicly.

He was being asked to do all those things, yes, but could not deliver because it simply is not part of his game.

That's not his fault. It's Jim Hendry's.
