This Just In
Hat tip to my SB Nation sister site Lone Star Ball for this news:
The Cubs have apparently acquired Phil Nevin from the Rangers. He'd better be able to play first base, because otherwise, the Cubs just got a DH, which they really can't use except for six games next month.
The only online reference I can find is the Dallas Morning News site, which has an "Alert" running at the top of the site.
If I can find out more I'll post it.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
man this is awful news.. Nevin has not hit over .240 in Texas and absolutely blows he is a DH he cannot play defense.. and will be nothing more than an overpaid (11 mil the rest of the year) pinch hitter.. what the hell are we thinking.

You sound like Ron Santo!
Nevin's last good year was 2004. I suppose he could play first base.
He used to catch, although he hasn't done it since 1999 (except for two games last year and one in 2004).
I dunno what to think. I stress this is NOT confirmed -- the only link I have is the Dallas Morning News thing.

Sometimes..
I believe it was here. There was no one available that could turn the Cubs around. No one wanted to deal an Abreu or a Sheffield or someone whom could actually make an impact and turn this season around. Hendry did the right hting by doing nothing and seeing what his team could muster. Doing this now of all times is stupid and ill-sighted.. That my friend is the bullshit

I don't agree at all
All I'm saying is that the Cubs could have made a much smarter move, if this is in fact true. Granted, waiting is better than getting Nevin, but we could have done better.

Like Whom?
by cubsfan2883 on May 31, 2006 2:57 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
First of all...
Second of all, trading for a 1B is borderline insanity anyways, with Lee coming back soon and Walker/Mabry ready to step in if need be. If you're going to make a move, I say you look to improve the outfield. I wouldn't have been against trading for prospects, I really wouldn't have.
by elscorcho0682 on May 31, 2006 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I was being respectful as the tone
I agree it is insanity but the other options were
- Tony Clark
- JT Snow
- Jeff Conine
So does Nevin but you really cannot improve our OF as is.. Unless you make a BIG splash.. Jones is hitting the ball fairly well I don't like his OBA but the .279 avg is fairly solid. Murton has a .280 AVG with a .350 OBA..
Pierre? Are you saying deal for a CF not with Pie shortly in the wings..
by cubsfan2883 on May 31, 2006 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
You're right
Plus, we've been talking all season about trying to get Pierre up to a point where he would be at least semi-attractive trade bait. Who knows when Pie is going to make the move up...it may be this season, it may not be.
by elscorcho0682 on May 31, 2006 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
But you are missing the point..
We know that those players suck and that they will provide no results..
We don't know that in two years from now that any of the prospects that we might have kept could be something.. We do a horrible job of managing our farm so chances are they will flop like Conine and Snow etc etc.. But we cannot just sell for some bum veteran every time we have an injury.

Didn't you say we should use our prospects to pry away those crummy IF?
I would have been much happier if the Cubs went out and tried to steal Ryan Shealy from the Rockies... Who can hit but is trapped behind Todd Helton. But no.. we deal for.. Phil I have a BA of under .210 Nevin.
Great. Wake me when he gets his first hit as a Cub.. it should be about a week ro so

I checked Baseball Reference and
Having said that, I feel like playing him there would be a total disaster, kind of like Keith Moreland with less range.
This is a move that makes no sense at this time, with Lee returning in the next few weeks. This might have made more sense the first week that Lee was out, but now doesn't seem to be the time to bring in someone who basically is going to end up as a PH. Things like this really add fuel to the fire and make me wonder what exactly is Hendry looking at when he's constructing his team.

More detail
ARLINGTON -- Just shy of the season's one-third mark, the Rangers ended the Phil Nevin experiment Wednesday afternoon.
A week after Nevin lost his job to rookie Jason Botts, the club was putting the final touches on a deal with the Chicago Cubs, a pair of Rangers sources said. No further details of the deal were available. The Rangers are expected to pick up a significant portion of the $6 million remaining on Nevin's salary. They are not expected to receive a significant player in return. here is a long quotation here is a long quotation
From the article. Well, at least we didn't give anybody up according to the article.

I don't see this as world ending
The benefit tends to be on the peripheral. Nevin IS a power threat and could offer some protection for ARam who is showing signs of life.
Plus, it allows the Cubs to not rush Lee. If he comes back before he's ready, he might change his swing to compensate, etc, and then there's more of a problem. Plus, Lee may need a day off or two at least in the early going.
Depends on how much salary the Rangers keep and what players are involved.
If it gets Womack off the roster somehow, even better.

Hairston was pretty useless, and I don't see him playing much in Texas, with Kinsler at 2B, and Mench and Wilkerson at the corner OF spots. Don't worry about him "haunting" us.

We don't need 5 2B's, and we do need a power hitter. Nevin had great years consistently from 99-04 (when healthy), why not give him a shot? The worst that could happen is he ends up being a pinch hitter with at least SOME power. The only thing Hairston has over Nevin is a good glove at 2B and OF.

But why exactly do we want him? Is he going to be a pinch hitter(btw, is Mabry OK? Haven't seen him in a while)? Is he going to platoon with Jacque? Is he good enough defensively and offensively to do that? Or do we not care because we are desperate? Lee is almost coming back, so I don't get it. I hope he gets hot and is traded away soon.

It all depends on the money...
Offensively, he's been bad this season. The Cubs have to to hope that he can at least get back to hitting like he did last season - here's his park-adjusted line for San Diego in 2005 (remember Petco is an extreme pitchers park):
AVG/OBP/SLG
266/311/418
That's not very good, but it's better than Neifi, Hairston, or Womack (despite his hot start), and that's who Nevin would replace in the lineup, with Walker shifting back to 2nd. Like many have said on this blog before - it doesn't take much to improve offensively on the second basemen the Cubs have been running out there.
All in all, this is more of a sideways move than anything, with the potential for a small upgrade offensively. Maybe Nevin can borrow some of Womack's "new Cub" pixie dust until Lee returns.

by pageian on May 31, 2006 3:30 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
So
Hairston wasn't going to be a significant contributer to the Cubs, and the Rangers are apparently paying most of Nevin's contract. He can play first until Lee gets back, and then fill in for Jones against lefties and spell Lee occasionally. If it doesn't work out, we cut his ass and all we're out is Jerry Hairston Jr.
This isn't a great or brilliant move that's going to save the season, but it's hardly a blunder. Would have been better if we'd have made the move a month ago and hoped Nevin caught fire or something.
Still, it's something and it only cost us the mediocre Hairston. (Although I still think it's funny we got the better end of the Sosa trade, even with how bad Hairston is, he's still in the game.)

You know what...
First of all, some of the same people are calling the kettle black. Some people bitch about everything from the season is over to I hate Freddy Bynum to anything they can find to complain about.
The last two weeks that's all that has been done on this site is complaining, whining, and bitching. For anyone (including myself) to attack someone for voicing their opinion about a trade which is obviously not the greatest.. ( again my opinion) is selfish, short-sighted, and hypocritical..
Sure Nevin may end up being at best 2003 Randall Simon.. and that's fine. and yes we signed Jerry Hairston's illegitmate brother Tony Womack who can put up Hairston-esque numbers at a fraction of the price. But do know that Phil Nevin in no way shape or form is a step in the right direction.
What we have here is another HIGH strikeout guy who will clog the bench. Dusty doesn't want the bases clogged because sometimes he gets lonely when the bases are loaded.. so he clogs the bench instead.

this trade seems good to me
I see Nevin as a "poor man's" Craig Wilson.
He has value in his ability to play all of the corner positions as well as catch. And while he's not a gold-glover at any of those positions, neither is John Mabry.
And once Lee returns, Nevin might be assigned to face the occassional lefty, which will rest Jacque Jones on those days.
Plus, Nevin helps ease the load caused by Barret's pending 7-10 game suspension.
And while Nevin's batting line isn't great, it is WAY better than what Neifi, Hairston, and Bynum were doing and WILL be better than Womack's production once Tony Womack likely returns to his career norms.
And historically Nevin's been very good against LHPs, who have totally eaten our lunch all year long.
And we only gave up Jerry Hairston Jr., who played himself out of a job and who was not really contributing very much to the team.
As it has been lamented, we already have a number of Second-Basemen. Neifi is better defensively, Bynum is faster, and Womack is...well...Womack is...more experienced.
At the very least, we have a better hitter coming off the bench than Hairston. If that fact alone were the only benefit (and it's not), this would be a good deal.
The only way I see this hurting us is if:
- It puts Walker on the bench in favor of Nevin and Womack.
- Nevin replaces Matt Murton in LF.
This move does make our OF defense take a little bit of a hit, as Hairston is likely a better OFer defensively than Nevin.
And-- I'm not sure who the back-up CFer is now. Bynum? Neifi? Womack? Blanco?
In all, these seems like a pretty shrewd deal for Hendry.
I'm on board with it. We'll see how it plays out.

OK
Second - he is one year removed from a .289, 26 homer season.
third- They got him for the fourth string second baseman. As a reminder to everyone, Jerry Hairston was neither young, nor likely to be a contributor. He is moving on to a team where he will now be a third string second baseman. Quite a step up.
Four - Acquiring Nevin blocks nobody in the lineup, keeps no kid on the farm, and could provide some pop to the lineup.
The guy IS a bit of headcase and managed to completely psych himself out in San Diego, and I think that carried on to Texas. Now he has a chance to go back into the NL, play in the field and to see what he can do.
I understand, everybody must bitch. It is the god given right as a Cubs fan. But give the man a chance.

point by Point...
He hasn't played 1b in a year and a half since he played 1b with the San Diego Padres last July since being dealt he has DH'ed the entire time with Texas
Second - he is one year removed from a .289, 26 homer season
2 years.. last year he .220 with 12 hrs in split duty between SD and Tex and he has shown no signs of going back to his 2004 form.
This year he is hitting .216 with 9 hrs.. Big whoop.
third- They got him for the fourth string second baseman. As a reminder to everyone, Jerry Hairston was neither young, nor likely to be a contributor. He is moving on to a team where he will now be a third string second baseman. Quite a step up.
Hairston had his 30th birthday 2 days ago.. He now moves to a team where he will be a solid contributor unlike Nevin here.
Four - Acquiring Nevin blocks nobody in the lineup, keeps no kid on the farm, and could provide some pop to the lineup.
Outside of the fact that we could have called up someone with talent to play 1b.. or perhpas not got a guy who is hitting .216 with an OBA that hovers around .300.. yeah.. I know many a minor leaguer that can put up Phil Nevin digits.

He was hitting in
He played first base for the Padres for the first half of all of last year. How is that a year and a half ago. Plus, he got a couple of spot starts there last year, and one this year, while with the Rangers.
Jerry Hairston, Jr sucks. He will be lucky to be a minor contributor to the Rangers. He's blocked at second by Kinsler and Derosa, and won't see much time in the outfield either.
Sad thing is, we don't have any minor leaguers that can sniff Nevin's jock right now, and play first base. Otherwise we would have called one up six weeks ago.
I mean, we got him for JHJ, and we got them to pick up the difference in dollars. How is this bad? We have an actual power option off the bench now, and he's costing us the same as one of our shitty second basemen. If we could have gotten him instead of JHJ in the Sosa deal coming off of that 2004 season, we would have been thrilled.
by Whitebacon on Jun 1, 2006 2:42 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Your spin needs work, cubsfan2883
- You're wrong about Nevin not playing first base in a year and a half. He was acquired by Texas from San Diego on July 30, 2005, which by any calendar I've looked at lately is less than a year ago -- and he played 71 games with the Padres as a first baseman and 2 as a catcher last season. Nor was he completely a DH as a Ranger; he played three games as a first baseman for Texas last season, one as a first baseman this season, and even got in an inning of work this year as a third baseman for the Rangers.
- "Big whoop"? His nine homers and 31 RBIs immediately make him the Cubs leader in both categories. Look, nobody is making Nevin out to be something that he isn't. He's clearly on the downside of his career. But for a Cubs team that has been punchless to the point of desperation this season (last in the majors in slugging percentage, last in the majors in homers) his long-ball capability is at least useful.
- Hairston will be "a solid contributor" for the Rangers? Think again, my friend. He'll get even less playing time at 2b for the Rangers behind Ian Kinstler, Mark DeRosa, and D'Angelo Jimenez than he was getting with the Cubs at that position. And the Texas outfield includes two starters that are hitting over .300 (Little Sarge and Kevin Mench) and a guy with a lot more talent than Hairston in Brad Wilkerson. Hairston will get one start a week at best in the Texas outfield.
- What Cubs farmhand could the team have called up to play 1b? Micah Hoffpauir? He just got called up to Iowa from West Tenn. He's not ready for the majors yet. Brandon Sing? He's hitting .177 at Iowa. Jeff Deardorff? He's hitting .227 at Iowa. Bring up any of these guys right now, and you'll be throwing them to the wolves. None of them is prepared to hit major-league pitching right now. You may think you know "many a minor leaguer that can put up Phil Nevin digits", but none of them are under contract to the Chicago Cubs.
This trade isn't going to save the Cubs from the ongoing disaster that is the 2006 season, and I don't think anyone's selling it as that here. But it is on balance a good trade, especially since Texas is picking up a large (albeit undisclosed at the moment) chunk of Nevin's salary. The Cubs jettisoned a superfluous part, and they picked up a player that they can use, at least for the moment.

Blah blah blah all talk
an Inning.. You are going to bitch about an inning of work.. Hell Jerry Hairston could play an inning at any of the offensive positions.. that must make him valuable.. Furthermore a year and a half.. we are nearly a half of a year into the baseball season this year.. and He lost his job in SD about 3/4 of the way int here.. so would it make you feel better if I said 1.25? Happy?
Didn't think so.
"Big whoop"? His nine homers and 31 RBIs immediately make him the Cubs leader in both categories. Look, nobody is making Nevin out to be something that he isn't. Yeah great.. he has been 3-27 in the last 27 AB's 2 of those were HR's. This guy was a solid contributor.. 2-3 mo ago he has faded. Last year his OBA was .287 expect something closer to that.
Hairston will be "a solid contributor" for the Rangers? Think again, my friend. He'll get even less playing time at 2b for the Rangers behind Ian Kinstler, Mark DeRosa, and D'Angelo Jimenez than he was getting with the Cubs at that position. D'Angelo Jimenez will be replaced by Hairston Hairston will be a back up IF/OF.. Which is better than what Nevin can possibly put up here.
3-27 I will remind you of this number throughout the rest of my argument.. you know what 3-27 is.. its 1-9 or .111 Thats a sexy batting average.
What Cubs farmhand could the team have called up to play 1b? Micah Hoffpauir? He just got called up to Iowa from West Tenn. He's not ready for the majors yet. Brandon Sing? He's hitting .177 at Iowa. I for one think the Cubs 25 man roster and even the 40 man roster is burning players. But thats just me
Right now I would make Neifi the permanent backup SS. Make Walker the permanent 1B with Mabry as a backup and DFA Bynumb and bring up 2b Mike Fontenot. Who btw is sporting quite a sexy OBA at AAA Iowa. Go look him up while you are at it.
Lastly, one point that you have yet to address is the fact that Nevin is still an effective hitter against lefties. He's posted .267/.340/.533 numbers this year against southpaws, and we've all seen for ourselves what left-handed pitching has done to Cubs bats this year (.212/.276/.338 as a team).
This trade isn't going to save the Cubs from the ongoing disaster that is the 2006 season, and I don't think anyone's selling it as that here. But it is on balance a good trade, especially since Texas is picking up a large (albeit undisclosed at the moment) chunk of Nevin's salary. See this is where I am the most frustrated. Right now JHJ could be sent to the Oakland A's for a solid MiL and a marginal one. Trust your scouting director Tim Wilken who is no idiot. Rather than bring in a bad defensive guy who has hit poorly for average moderately well for power.. who will be a FA at the end of the year. It is SOUND baseball strategy. What the Cubs did was put a bandaid on the black k-nigget's flesh wound. The Black Knight got his arm cut off but claimed it was just a flesh wound. The Cubs are seemingly metaphorically like the black knight. Wood is his left arm.. Prior the right arm.. Lee both legs. Without either of those limbs all we are resolved to is.. "I'll bite your leg off"

More bad spin
- First of all, I'm not "going to bitch about an inning of work" here and there in the field for Nevin as a Ranger. I'm simply setting the record straight. You said that he was exclusively a DH for the Rangers and that he hadn't played 1b for them, and you were wrong. Second, we aren't "nearly half a year into the baseball season". We aren't even a third of the way into the baseball season. Fifty-four games is the 1/3rd mark; the Cubs have currently played 52 and the Rangers have played 53. Third, Nevin started 70 games at 1b for the Padres last season. Even if he had started the first 70 and then been benched, that would've made him the starting SD first baseman right up until about the third week of June, which is still less than a year ago. Happy? Well, I will be once you've figured out how to read a calendar properly.
- Barring injury to one of the Rangers regulars, Nevin will be starting more games as a Cub than Hairston will start as a Ranger. Make book on it. And go ahead and keep reminding me of Nevin's 3-27 slump. In turn I will remind you that Hairston's currently in an 0-21 slump. You know what 0-21 is? It's 0-21, or a .000 batting average. If you think .111 is sexy, you must think that .000 is NC-17 territory.
- Your new plan to reconfigure the Cubs roster involves bringing up Mike Fontenot. Fontenot is a 2b/3b, not a 1b. You said that the Cubs could call up a first baseman from the minors that could hit better than Nevin. You've conveniently backed away from that assertion by shifting to Fontenot. But I'm still waiting for you to tell me which Cubs 1b farmhand -- Hoffpauir, Sing, Deardorff, or somebody else -- is the guy who can outhit Nevin in the bigs right now, or at least equal him.
- You're still evading the whole matter of Nevin being an effective weapon against southpaws, and the importance of this in light of how anemic the Cubs offense has been against lefthanders.

A positive
- If you put Nevin at first you can put Walker back at second and Neifi can do whatever it is he does on the bench.
- Dusty can give Murton a day off and still have a righty in the lineup.
- Give Jones a day off against lefties, since he hits lefties reasonably well.
- Would you rather have Jerry Hairston or Phil Nevin have your back in a bench clearing brawl?
