Prior setback

Wow. If this wasn't the Cubs, I wouldn't believe it.
Pitching coach Larry Rothschild said Prior is battling food poisoning that he picked up here in Arizona. Rothschild added that Prior will resume his throwing program once he is able, but no one can be certain right now when that might be and how long it will take him to feel at full strength again.
I....have no words anymore..

Seriously though, not all that surprising when it comes to Cubs.

I'd ask what else could go wrong, but I'd be destined to get answer if I did.

That all being said, I remain optimistic about Wood, I'm especially encouraged when Steve Stone believes his mechanics are "tight".  Say what you will about Stone, but it's nice to have a person that will speak candidly about the Cubs.

Guess the Cubbies are running out of excuses for the dynamic duo.  Are you kidding me?  Food poisoning?  They can't do any better than that?   Next thing you know, the guys going to get a hangnail and we can just call it a career.

more reason to believe
that the rest of the league knew that he was damaged goods, and that is why the Cubs were unable to trade for Tejada.  Maybe it really is food poisoning, but this is insane.  Maybe he just doesn't want to pitch for the Cubs anymore.

the offseason
Remember when you and I went back and forth about trying to get Tejada and somehow keep Prior on the team as well.  Boy was I wrong.  A thousand apologies.  Prior is a sissy.  At least Kerry Wood came out and threw out of the bull pen last season knowing he would need surgery.  In hindsight they should have probably done the surgery sooner, but at least we know that Kerry is not a girly man.  How far the Mighty Mark has fallen.
On the bright side, I live in East Peoria and am going to try to go to Sunday's game to see Woody pitch.

If you've ever had food poisoning you know if can be debilitating.  If you haven't had it, it's mean, you don't want it.  If he's really got a bad case of food poisoning I feel bad for him.  The important word in that sentence being "if".  Let's continue to hope for the best.  What else can we do at this point.  Maybe some time off from throwing because of this will ease his mind a little more about his arm.

Slack? Who's gotten more than Prior
This guy is a "starting pitcher" on a MLB team. Bottom Line he gets paid to pitch and he hasn't done much of that since a certain game back in 03'.
To Bleed or Not to Bleed?

by TheRamZamDLEE on May 4, 2006 9:57 AM CDT up reply actions

True but
pitching is a physical activity.  If your body isn't physically right you can't do it correctly.  Someone like Prior is probably more in tune with his health than most of us are.  If he can't do it, he can't do it.  I'm not saying he isn't a girly man, I'm just saying whatever the underlying reasons are, he's not physically able to pitch at his ability level, whether he gets paid to or not.

Maybe it's mental with him like is being speculated about AJ Burnett, but maybe he truly has had a string of bad luck and he really does want to be out there throwing.  Since we don't know him personally it's tough to say one way or the other.

I recall seeing Prior always munching on a candy bar of some sort after his outings. I always wondered if maybe he was a diabetic, that could also explain his reluctance to go under the knife because of the difficulty diabetics have with wound healing.

the only thing than keeps me from writing this guy off is that he and Wood both have at least another decade left in their careers.  Two years from now holding up that trophy we might be laughing at how shitty of a stretch those guys had to go to before they got to pitch.

by mike bornemann @ Bleed Cubbie Blue on May 4, 2006 10:38 AM CDT reply actions

Why all the name calling?
Prior has proven himself a competitor many times, and food poisoning is a real, but short term problem.

Shoulder injuries are very tricky, especially with pitchers since their control can be set off so easily.  It's not like someone being willing to run on a bad leg even if they limp a bit.

Its also important to come back slowly, since overuse quickly leads to inflation that could set the player back by weeks.

by Routine Pop Fly on May 4, 2006 10:47 AM CDT reply actions

This is so much like what...
the Cardinals went through with JD Drew. Superstar talent everyone said he could be an MVP but he never stayed healthy long enough to do anything. I wonder if being such a highly thought of player and having everyone baby you all of your career has anything to do with these guys problems. Maybe they think that every time they feel a twinge or a twist that they have to shut it down when guys like Clemens would just go back out there and battle through it. Maybe not but its worth a thought.

by RB on May 4, 2006 12:56 PM CDT reply actions

I've thought that
I've wondered about that about Prior for a while.
When he was coming up, it was all about his "perfect mechanics".
Maybe he just never really has known the kind of pain major-league pitchers live through on a daily basis. You read any autobiography or interview with a long-time pitcher, and it's a litany of constant, sometimes excruciating pain.
I think Mark may have never really experienced that, with the short college season and not much time in the minors. Maybe he's just feeling the day-to-day aches of a major-leaguer and afraid it's something more than "typical" excruciating pain.

In other Prior news...
... the lawsuit involving him and the Naperville store at which he was supposed to appear two years ago was settled today:

The judge said Prior was NOT rude to fans, but that he'll have to pay $30,000 for things he was supposed to sign but didn't -- money that Prior had apparently offered from the beginning but the store had refused.

Split decision, based on this article.
