Open Thread: Cubs vs. Astros, Tuesday 6/13, 7:05 CT

We have discussed some very heavy and contentious topics the last couple of days, with a lot of thoughtful posts.

Now, let's just focus on tonight's game; the Cubs have the chance to win four in a row for the first time in almost a year -- since July 8-15, 2005, when they won 5 in a row sandwiched around the All-Star break.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Sean Marshall
 S. Marshall
Cubs
vs. Andy Pettitte
 A. Pettitte
Astros
3-4 W-L 5-7
4.43 ERA 5.81
47 SO 30
27 BB 30
5 HR 14
vs. Hou -- vs. Cubs

Intriguing. Marshall is throwing against the Astros for the second straight start; he threw that gem last Wednesday, only to lose to someone throwing better.

Pettitte is 1-3 with an 8.64 ERA on the road this year. He is 0-2, 4.40 lifetime vs. the Cubs (0-1, 7.11 at Wrigley Field). Naturally, that probably means he's in line to throw a 3-hit shutout tonight.

The Cubs are 7-1 in home night games, for whatever THAT is worth.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

I agree...
Pettite will throw a gem tonight, Marshall will get knocked around a little.

Pettitte is all or nothing this year
So was Buchholtz and the Cubs got to him, here's hoping Pettitte suffers the same feat.

Andy Pettite...
...is not the pitcher he used to be, but I do believe he is a lefty.  We all know the Cubs struggles against lefties.  Let's hope the Astros have even bigger problems against our lefty.  This is a night game on CSN, you have to feel good about it.

Maybe we'll learn a little about Marshall
facing a team that just saw him a few days ago.  If he does well then that bodes well for his future right?  Or does it just tell us that the Astros offense sucks?  Who cares, I just hope he does well.

That lovely column most papers run showing info
on a pitchers last 3 starts
Pettitte IP 18 ERA 6.00
Marshall IP 19.1 ERA 2.33
and saving the best for last

Go Marshall!

Marshall vs. Petitte.
It is Marshall who will throw the gem and Pettite who will get knocked around, especially if Dusty has a good lineup. I would have to agree w/ Jerry Buraterson's lineup. That looks great to me.

At least can we have Nevin at first, Walker at second, Ronny at ss and Rami (showing some pop) at third!? please!

GO CUBS!!! Four game winning streak! Woo!!!

Just hoping for .500 this year...

Or did Dusty, in anoth show of brilliance, decide that Walker was his worst available LHB?

by Matt Allison on Jun 13, 2006 6:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Well this lineup
Is obviously a well thought out strategy.  By batting Neifi after Pierre, the pitcher will be so happy to be able to face the easiest 2 outs in the majors that he may throw a lemon up there that can be dropped down for a bunt that they almost beat out.
Chicks dig the bunt out.

Yes, the bunt...
that's right, I forgot that this is our bunting Brigade that will storm the NL with squibs, and pushes, drags, and rollers and totally cofund the opposition...Also, did anyone notice how well our new "Speed Grass" helped get us 26 bunt hits tonight and 34 stolen bases?  How did the Speed Grass do tonight?

7-1 in night games at Wrigley
As the immortal Homer Simpson once said, "I like those odds!"

Without actually checking any scores, I think the Cubs have handled the Astros fairly well at home the last few years, but I wouldn't be suprised if the numbers don't actually bear that out.  If Marshall can throw like he did last week, the Cubs have a great shot tonight.  And it appears whatever wind there is will be blowing in from center, for whatever that is worth.

by gauchodirk on Jun 13, 2006 6:34 PM CDT reply actions

UGHHHH
nEifi Perez....I wish he hasnt had that decent game for once in his life, now dusty will love him even more... I swear those two are " Butt " Buddys... sumone just bean neifi in the head please...So what is walker is a lefty... he can hit leftys better than neifi ever could

by PrimeTime on Jun 13, 2006 6:39 PM CDT reply actions

If only that were true
Neifi's career average vs. lefties: .272 (OPS .720) in 1354 ABs

Walker's career average vs. lefties: .260 (OPS .684) in 855 ABs

What is interesting but worthless: Walker's career average against the Astros is the second lowest of any team he has played against, only better than his average against the Phillies.

and young guys tend to be inconsistent.  I read something on him in the BP2006 issue and they saids he has a history of arm problems, hasn't pitched much in the minoirs due to inuries and that control can be a problem.

He's had a very solid rookie season so far, hopefully his arm is past the injuries.  But I think there will be plenty of night when he gets shelled.

...it's totally lame, they are a couple of spoiled beach wusses.  The lead guy, Ted something or other, goes on about how the press box is lousy and the clubhouse is small and the poorr fat bastard has to walk to his announcing perch.  They critique the stadium from the perspective of covenience for announcers, like anyone gives a crap.  They say nothing about the Fans' perspective because they are so out of touch.  The Ted guy got in trouble one evening for a remark he made when he did not know that his mic was live.  In between innings but still on air, he swore and complained that the game was going into extra innings and how he hated extra innings.  The guy is totally spoiled idiot.

if Dusty really is so stupid that he doesn't realize that it's suicide to put Pierre and Neifi at the top of the lineup or if he's doing it out of some sort of loyalty to those guys.  It just doesn't make sense.  We're in June already and they've proven for 2 and a half months that they can't get on base on a consistent basis.  They've got to be moved down in the order.  They're killing the offense hitting so high.

Oh sure, the Cubs sucked again tonight, but I am completely distracted by an overwhelming desire for a Motorola phone (for those who didn't see the broadcast, that's a reference to the absolutely brutal John McDonough introduction of the new wireless Motorola bullpen phones as if they would revolutionize the game). Cubs By The Numbers

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way.
