I'm utterly disgusted by all the righteous indignation going around Cubs Nation regarding Jeremy Piven's comments during the 7th inning stretch. First, if you live in Chicago and don't know who Jeremy Piven is, I don't even know what to say to you. Second, if you don't watch Entourage on HBO (which might be the coolest show on TV), you did't get the joke. Trust me, it was funny. My kids hear 10 times that amount of profanity at every Cubs game just sitting in the grandstands, so please spare me the "won't someone please think of the children?!?!?!" bullsh*t.
But what is really killing me is how fired up everyone is about someone defiling their beloved 7th Inning Stretch. Is this what it takes to get Cubs fans up in arms to the point of expressing their outrage? Profanity?
What about the profanity going on on the field EVERY SINGLE GAME? Wanna hear something really profane?
How abut Tony Womack starting instead of Todd Walker? How about Dusty's plans to platoon Murton and Bynum? How about the revolving door of young pitchers that Hendry keeps bringing up, week after week, for just long enough so that their trade value is completely obliterated? How about Neifi being in the #@*&#@# lineup EVERY OTHER DAY?!?!?!?!?! How about the fact that we went into this season relying on the comebacks of Prior, Wood, and Miller to field a decent starting rotation? How about doing NOTHING in the face of Lee's injury to help this team out? How about blowing the Furcal deal and failing to get us a decent starting pitcher in the off season? How about Hendry, Baker, and McPhail's comments that they still believe they can compete with this team? How about Hendry's extension, and Dusty's probable one? How about Dusty's treatment of young pitching arms? How about Dusty's treatment of young players?
How's THAT for profane?
If the people get the government they deserve, then the fans get the team they deserve. If Dusty's extension is inevitable, it's only because we have been too satisfied sitting in the sun, looking at the ivy, and drinking beer rather than caring about the product put on the field. If the front office was getting as much heat about the way this team is playing as they are about Piven's cuss word, maybe Dusty's extension wouldn't be a foregone conclusion. Maybe we'd have a GM who actually makes something happen once in a while, and maybe, just maybe, for once, we'd have a team on the field of which we could be proud.
As long as what goes on during the 7th Inning Stretch is the biggest concern to Cubs fans, this team is going nowhere. . . .fast.
