Open Thread: Cubs vs. Cardinals, Friday 6/2, 7:10 CT

So.

Anything new since these teams last met?

Of course, that's a silly question. Since April 23, when Greg Maddux salvaged the last game of the series in St. Louis, the Cardinals are 23-12, and the Cubs have gone 10-24 ... the Cardinals picking up 12.5 games in the standings, and currently have the best record in the National League.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Sean Marshall
 S. Marshall
Cubs
vs. Sidney Ponson
 S. Ponson
Cardinals
3-3 W-L 4-0
5.03 ERA 2.92
38 SO 17
26 BB 12
4 HR 5
vs. StL -- vs. Cubs

This is a pitching rematch of the Sunday night game at Wrigley Field on April 9, when Michael Barrett's grand slam off Jason Isringhausen won the game for the Cubs. The Cardinals are the first team that Marshall will have faced twice, so we'll see if that makes any difference. It's the same for Ponson; that April 9 start still represents his worst Cardinal appearance.

Phil Nevin will make his Cub debut tonight. The guy most Cub fans love to hate, Jim Edmonds, is expected to go on the DL before tonight's game.

Telling stats: the Cubs are 4-13 in one-run games. That's terrible. They are 17-6 when scoring 4 runs or more, only 3-26 when scoring 3 runs or less. GET SOME OFFENSE GOING!

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Cardinals
I hate the Cardinals more than any team we face. I hope we can steal two from them. My only wish would be to have Edmonds take a heater to the ribs but that isn't going to happen tonight.....damn.

by mrcubsfan on Jun 2, 2006 5:15 PM CDT reply actions

That 17-6 record is pretty surprising
I mean, most teams do well when scoring 4 or more, but if nothing else, it shows that when the Cubs score well, their pitchers help it stand up.  I'm sure there are plenty of teams that have lost more than six games when scoring 4 or more.

Of course, the fact that the Cubs have only scored 4 or more in 23 games out of 52 is pretty pathetic, so I guess there's always more bad this good, at least this season.

by gauchodirk on Jun 2, 2006 5:21 PM CDT reply actions

Comparison:
The Cardinals are 30-5 when scoring four or more runs this year, and thus 4-14 when scoring three or fewer.

by Al Yellon on Jun 2, 2006 5:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Even more comparison
I wanted to see what a mediocre team's record looked like, so I picked the 26-28 Brewers.  They are 22-10 when scoring 4 or more, thus they are 4-18 when scoring 3 or less.

Counting those games was tough.  Is there a better way to do this that I don't know about?

by gauchodirk on Jun 2, 2006 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Not that I know of...
... I had to count them too.

It's still relatively easy, since only about 1/3 of the season is gone. Try doing this in September! ;)

by Al Yellon on Jun 2, 2006 6:40 PM CDT up reply actions

One more comparison
The Reds, pretty much middle in the road in terms of pitching (16th in MLB in ERA), are 25-5 when scoring 4 or more, thus 4-19 when scoring three or fewer.

by gauchodirk on Jun 2, 2006 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Go Big Smooth!
I love that nickname.

Pujols is a nice guy. Maybe he will be nice and not hit any homeruns or anything for RBIs during the whole series.

I'm with ya, Al. They need to score some runs!

Cubbie Blue will always sPaRkLe in my eyes, but please stop losing. PLEASE!

by sparkles721 on Jun 2, 2006 5:49 PM CDT reply actions

Cubs will take series.
I really think the Cubs will take this series. I think they always seem to know that it is on when it comes time to play the Cardinals. They won't like having lost the last series and will remember the joy of sweeping them at home in April.

If there's anyone the Cards can beat, it's the National League. If there's one team they can't master, it's the Cubs of the last few years.

Predicting Marshall goes at least 6 innings and gives up 3 or fewer runs tonight. And Glendon is going to shock us with a good outing on Saturday.

GO CUBS!!

Well...
Ponson is a righty, so it makes sense to play Jones, who has hit righties well and has been hitting well lately.  Walker has hit Ponson well (7 for 19).  So has Cedeno (.750 - but only 4 at bats).  Womack is hitting .343 on the year because of his production lately (shouldn't we keep using him while he's hot?).  Don't want Nevin behind the plate until Barrett has been suspended.  Where would we play him tonight?  I don't think it's good to use him just because we have him.

not so fast
I think it's too soon to label Ryu a AAAA pitcher.  He's still very young (only 22 or 23), he's only thrown THREE innings for the Cubs and this is actually his first season at AAA.

I think he's actually on or ahead of schedule.

I feel better about him than most of our prospects.

Did the Cubs just get someone out who was swinging on a first pitch!?

This is great. Just maybe the Cubs are doing some things right (throwing runners out, taking walks) and some other teams can do semi-bone-headed things like not taking any pitches.

WHEW!
We need at least one run with Pujols/Rolen coming up in the bottom half.

by grifdog on Jun 2, 2006 10:57 PM CDT reply actions

Cardinal announcers said that Walker was slow
to cover first, made it sound like a good play would have had Bigbie out.

Sounds like Ramirez had two good plays.

Hypothetical Question
Say this game goes a bunch more innings, do you put in Rusch and let Wood pitch on his normal rest tommorow?

by akcubfan on Jun 2, 2006 11:15 PM CDT reply actions

I'll answer later.
But as of right now, I'm under the impression Walker is gonna homer and we will win it by throwing 9 straight strikes afterwards.
