Yesterday's poll

I've stayed away from this site for quite a while now, simply because I feel no one here is interested in discussion.  I described this place as driving your car at a tree, then blowing the horn and expecting the tree to get out of the way.  New ideas are met with a slammed door if they disagree with the worldview that the status quo is sufficient.

At least on the other sites, people are open to new ideas.  Even CCD changed his mind just yesterday on the whole Cubs-terrible customer service/brick issue once logic was explained to him.  Wow.  Opinion modified by new evidence!  What a novel concept.

But what brings me to start my first ever diary here is two of your foulest balls, Sara and cubbiejulie.  Yesterday, they went off on a 16 year old girl for supposedly doing my dirty work and starting a poll over here.  My purpose?  To make BTI'ers look foolish.

Like most of you need my help.

Go re-read how that whole thing originated over at 1060.  Then look at the comments here.  You'd think I had been planning this for weeks.

This site claims to have community standards.  Those standards have allowed people to be accused of illegal acts and called out by ad hominem after ad hominem.  Well, the biggest reason why is those two banana hammocks, Sara and cubbbieulie.  These two "womyn" (can't have "man" in "woman") have done more to make this place a hostile, unfriendly environment than just about anyplace on the web outside of Little Green Footballs.

That these two are allowed to continue to post here sickens me.  I have no idea what their relationship is and if they are coordinating their attacks against those of us with differing opinions.  All I can guess is that the relationship is unique.

I wonder which of them wears the goatee?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Punching AJP was classless, but this you enjoy?  Bit of a double standard, don't you think?

Chuck, just because I'm too old for you to be friends with does not mean you should come over here and share your freakish opinions.

But *sigh, I guess we'll just have to read you spew out the words "ad hominem" about a thousand times and then you can crawl back into your hole.

Is this crap what you want people to be open to?
Sarah and Julie have made great contributions to this site and have injected lighthearted humor into many days when we, as Cub fans, needed to laugh to keep from becoming too cynical and calling for boycotts.

You fancy yourself someone who has mastered the art of intelligent conversation and argument, but can't recognize how flawed the three choice poll was?

And with all the insults that are hurled at this site and Al in particular, is it really that great a stretch of imagination to think that you may have attempted to orchestrate something for the sole purpose of making the people who dare to disagree with you look stupid?

Of course, you calling them names and suggesting that they have a lesbian relationship goes a long way to help your argument.

As I have previously stated...
...I am currently 9,000 miles from home without any possible way to watch the cubbies play. I tried to get the MLB.com but the wireless router doesn't work fast enough.  Anyway, I got on this site because I am unable to talk about the cubbies or see what is going on with my cronies from Illinois.  I have to say that although I do not particularly remember either of these ladies being so blatantly negative towards anyone, I do at times get frustrated with the run ons and run ons of "he's hot" blah, blah, blah.  I think it is ok to get side tracked once in awhile but when it is response to response to response on a guy's hotness instead of his ability to play baseball it gets a little tiresome.  If I wanted to chat about GQ, I would read the free People magazines that the Family Readiness Group sends us.

Chuck,
please continue to stay away from this site - I'd prefer not to read your condescending remarks again. Maybe I just wasn't reading this site enough when you were more active, but all I can EVER recall seeing from you is insulting posts like this one. If you have a legitimate opinion about the Cubs and can manage to discuss it without insulting or condesending to those who disagree with you, come on back. I'm always open to discussion when it involves civility on BOTH sides. Perhaps a few posters on BCB have been incivil to you in the past (I really don't know), but that doesn't give you the right to make a broad generalization about every single person that posts on this site.

by mportsch on Jun 21, 2006 4:59 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

So...
"all I can EVER recall seeing from you is insulting posts like this one"

That's a broad generalization if I ever saw one.

No it isn't.
It's a simple statement of the truth. I have never seen any posts from you except for posts like this. As I said, I haven't really come across your posts except for in recent months, so maybe you used to actually offer something useful. Why don't you prove me wrong by actually posting something constructive?

Chuck I do not understand what you are hoping to accomplish here.. I mean if you are trying to defend Sparks honor..okay.. she doesn't seem too upset about it.  The way you are coming off is just as a cheap way to bash two members of a site man.  I am neutral in this and dislike the whole bickering I get enough of that at work.  I just do not understand the need to post this diary.

by cubsfan2883 on Jun 21, 2006 11:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

OK.
Thanks for sticking up for me.

But please don't generalize.  That's the reason the poll was started by me.  It was because you and others were generalizing.

What ideas have been slammed?  Wanna discuss?  Let's discuss those without offending anyone.  What do you want to discuss?  You can also jump right in to the discussion of a possible Jacque Jones trade, Dusty Baker, Wood's problems, or just respond to a post like JoshinLA's today about the topic of the sale and why it isn't going to happen.  If you don't come it's not because no one wants to discuss, it's because you don't want to.

Cubbie Blue will always sPaRkLe in my eyes, but please stop losing. PLEASE!

Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

by Josh77 on Jun 21, 2006 7:19 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Have to jump in here
because I've gotten sick of the misuse of the word homophobic today because off all the radio discussion oof Guillen's comments re Mariotti.

Insinuating that someone is gay does not make one homophobic.  It might make the person bigoted, but only if the person they are talking about is, in fact, gay.

Additionally, it's not even slander - unless you are arguing that there is something wrong wiith being gay.  If so, you are saying the same thing you are criticizing that person for.

Words have definitions foor a reason.

by pwhalen on Jun 21, 2006 8:57 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Way to go...
Except, in his context he was treating it as an insulting, and a bad thing, so....

I don't think the people calling him homophobic think being gay is a bad thing, but merely pointing out the fact that he was treating it as an insult. Therefore, since he used the gay jokes to belittle them both, it WAS slander.

Your logic was fallacious, because you used circular logic, or "begging the question". You can't prove implicitly or explicitly that a person is homophobic because they call someone else homophobic.

I do agree that that term is probably thrown around too much, but damnit man, make sense when you post.

by CosmicCharlie911 on Jun 21, 2006 11:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Did any of you people pass English?
"Therefore, since he used the gay jokes to belittle them both, it WAS slander."

Main Entry: 2slander
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English sclaundre, slaundre, from Old French esclandre, from Late Latin scandalum stumbling block, offense -- more at SCANDAL
1 : the utterance of false charges or misrepresentations which defame and damage another's reputation
2 : a false and defamatory oral statement about a person -- compare LIBEL

  • slan·der·ous  -d(&-)r&s adjective
  • slan·der·ous·ly adverb
  • slan·der·ous·ness noun
The only was insinating that Mariotti was gay could be slander is if it would (see above) defame or damage his reputation.

If there is nothing wrong with being gay it cannot defame or damage him.

Therefore if you are calling it slander, you are saying there is something wrong with being gay.

It's not a circular arguement at all.  To avoid hurting anyones feelings here I use my own heritage as an example.  I'm Irish so I will take the lliberty of using the term Mick here.  If I call Yao Ming a lazy mick, can he sue for slander or libel?  No.  If I call him a theif, however, he could.  Because a theif is a bad thing which could damage his reputation.

Not slander, and not a homophobic comment.  Insensitive, yes.  Stupid, yes.

by pwhalen on Jun 22, 2006 5:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Whatever, man...
I'm not going to sit here and argue semantics. If you want to call it insensitive, I'm fine with that.

Oh
I'm sure he meant it as a compliment.  And I'm sure he has some sort of basis to make that claim.

It's homophobia when bringing up one's sexual preferences is completely irrelevant to the subject at hand.  And it's an insult to assume that any woman who isn't deferential to men is a lesbian.

Get real.  Of course it was a homophobic insult.  To pretend otherwise is to be complicit in their hate speech.

Re

Chuck may be on the fringe, but there's hardly some barren desert between him and the next person toward the center.  I also suspect your decision to allow virtually anything that's not illegal to transpire has, at times, been mistaken for approval, and that your primary goal is to let the community develop and evolve in whatever direction it may.

That's a very hard to thing to do.  Props for resisting the desire to shape and control it beyond what's absolutely necessary.

Cubs By The Numbers

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way. For everyone who's a Cubs fan, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Cubs By The Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even ones they think they already know.
