Originally from Louisiana (I now live in Austin), I have an natural affinity for players from the Bayou state. But all biases aside, I pose the suggestion that the middle infield at Iowa might be a totally competent keystone combo for the ML Cubs.
Here's their current line:
Ryan Theriot, SS:
230 AB; 0 HR; 20 RBI; .304/.370/.365 (.735); 24 BB/29 K; 14/15 SBs.
Mike Fontenot, 2B:
221 AB; 6 HR; 17 RBI; .326/.409/.484 (.894); 30 BB/41 K; 5-7 SBs.
These hitting lines are pretty consistent with the career lines. Solid career OBPs, with a clearly demonstrated discipline at the plate. And Fontenot has suprising pop for such a little guy. Both guys are 26 years old, so they might be a little old for their competition at AAA, but their track record is totally solild.
Further, both guys played at LSU, which means they have solid training in fundamentals, and are high character people-- the LSU program built under Skip Bertman is and has been one of the strongest in the country for years.
I would love to see both of them get a chance to play at the ML level this year.
