Kiley: Santo could miss two legs?

n/t

Star-divide

"Many Cubs players have the greatest respect for Santo and said they hope he comes back quickly, although he possibly could miss the first two legs of this trip (St. Louis and Houston). The Cubs go to Cincinnati to close out the journey next weekend." -  June 3, 2006, Mike Kiley

Santo "could miss the first two legs?"  OUCH!

you kinda feel bad about laughing at it, until you remember ronnie probably is

There's no doubt in my mind...
... that if Santo reads this, he will ROAR with laughter.

He approaches everything in life with an amazing good humor. I admire the man for being this way in spite of the adversity he has faced.

Agree...
One of the nicest individuals I have met.  Great sense of humor and outlook on life.

I only feel badly for Ron . . .
. . . for having to sit through - and try to comment on - the Cubs' season this year.
He deserves better.

Last month
there was a game where Ron and Pat were talking about leg injuries.  Ron said something to the effect of "I was fortunate to never have any leg injuries or issues."  <long, akward pause> "Until recently".  And he laughed, and Pat commended him for being able to laugh at what life brings.

I remember that...
I love Ron.  He's a true Cub fan, and that's why I love him.
Cubbie Blue will always sPaRkLe in my eyes, but please stop losing. PLEASE!

pardon me for being ignorant..
but what exactly is wrong with ronnie?

by mikew on Jun 5, 2006 12:38 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He was diagnosed
early on with diabetes.
In recent years he had both legs amputated below the knee.

yeah i knew all of that
I'm a HUGE Santo fan and I know all about his life and career.  I just have missed the info as to why he's been out the last week.

by mikew on Jun 5, 2006 5:33 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

now, or in general
he's kooky to start with, but you probably know that

other that the diabetes, 2 below knee amputations (I think it was around a dozen surgeries all together), the heart problems he's had, and the bladder cancer (it was bladder cancer right?) in 2003, from what I heard yesterday he was in the hospital recovering from a virus, but I didn't hear what kind of a virus

To which greats do you refer?
My comment is solely directed towards the on-field 2006 Chicago National League Ballclub.
Can you imagine what this play is doing to Ronnie's psyche? Running into double plays? Booting simple grounders? Walking in runs?
It's not good for the guy. He deserves better.

Well,
it was a batman thing... yeah...

Yeah, I got the joke, I just think it's bad karma (not to mention manners) to joke about someone who has fallen ill.  If he died you'd feel really guilty :)

You need to watch "This Old Cub"
To know what Ronnie really goes through.  Most people would have given up years ago.

TOC
such a great movie, and it never gets old, i made some friends (BoSox and Tigers fans) watch it and they even liked it
"In this life there are nothing but possibilities."

yeah, great show
Own it on DVD and have probably seen it no fewer than 10 times.

I will...
... heartily second this recommendation. Absolute must viewing for any Cub fan -- any baseball fan, in fact.

by Al on Jun 5, 2006 6:52 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Count me out...
I respect what Santo has accomplished and wish him the best.  However, I tried to watch TOC.  It failed to hold my interest & it was way too heavy on the Cub love for me.  If it were about a Sox player, I think many Cub fans would feel about the same.

This Old Cub, better than Syrup of Ipeccac to this not so old Sox fan.

my favorite
Santo is telling Pat Hughes about having a few drinks in the bar after the game with the coaches. He thought it was late like 1:00 am and went to his room. He looked at the clock and it was only 11:00. (And as only Ronnie could say) "I wanted to go back down to the bar but I was too lazy to put my legs back on!" And a big hardy laugh followed.......

Buster Olney said a few days ago that the Braves would entertain offers for their 26 year old shortstop (who makes 450k) Yunel Escobar. He is a plus bat, a solid defender, and would move Theriot to his more appropriate position at second.

They are looking for a bat in return. Apparently Cox doesn't like the guy.

I couldn't even speculate what we'd have to send them in return, but I think he would be a good fit given his low salary, his productive bat, his position, and his age. I don't care if he's a jerk if he makes the team win more.

What would it take?
